STGSTV album art

Ok, so over the last couple of days on the subreddit, a few of us have been searching for the source of the album art for STGSTV, as all we knew about it was that Avey thought it was fitting for the album, and that he forgot the name of the book that it came from. Well, I'm pleased to report that we have since found the source of the art. It is a Dorothy Lathrop illustration in a Sara Teasdale bookof children poetry called 'Stars Tonight', which is chock full of illustrations similar in style to STGSTV. No wonder Avey thought it was fitting.

Easier said than done, mate. The actual book was found in a university library, and I don't see a 90 year old book of kids poetry just coming up anywhere

It was awesome to be apart of the search for it. I was able to find a copy on Amazon for $1.89. It's an old library copy but we'll see how the book looks like. It has been the highlight of my night :)

I’m /u/nhien from the subreddit thread who posted the album (shoutout to everyone else for doing the actual research, I just picked it up from the library!) I’ve added some more scans—it’s not all of this book’s pictures, just the ones with humanoid subjects that are really reminiscent of the stgstv cover. The other pictures I didn’t include are just simple animal illustrations (still good though). There are lots more if you google Dorothy Lathrop.

Sorry the original images were blurry. My hands were shaking when I flipped to that page and saw it lol

wow this is so cool. ordered a copy from my library system (there's only one copy in circulation out of the 77 libraries in the system! pretty lucky). it's really cool that the poem that corresponds to the album art has similar themes to the album..."though the house we loved and the street we loved are lost", reminds me of the loss of childhood theme present throughout the album...

^Yeah, that's what I was struck by too. Much of the poems in the book are very similar to the themes on the album. Did Avey find that book, or just the artwork from it?

edit: nvm just read OP's post again. I wonder if it was a conscious decision to use the artwork because of the content of the book

do ya reckon that's the original artwork in the book? because the top of it is cut off, so either the full artwork exists elsewhere or dave got someone to edit in the top parts of the fairy dudes for the album cover

If you look at the art closely you can see the tips of the wings are drawn on.
