Painting With Gear

I read Panda Bear used the Teenage Engineering OP-1 for a lot of the bass lines on the album. I was hoping maybe we could start a list on which specific instruments were used.

I can't remember what interview it was, one of the first ones regarding Painting With. They mention something about the percussion instruments. They were used by a composer for a soundtrack or something, idk.

I wonder what song on the album features the side of a blow up pool.

if you have an Instagram, go follow @sportinglifeny

He's posted pictures of Geo and Panda's live gear, including their respective Modular Synths. Pretty neat stuff.

I'll link the pictures later when I get home!

this pic of them at the studio where they wrote/rehearsed Painting With has a Roland SP-555, and of course the 303, 404, and 555 have appeared on many of their releases/live setups since Feels. I think this time around it might have just been used for some of the effects though. On this great article about PBVGR gear Panda says he still sometimes uses those old samplers now, but mostly for the reverb and delay http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/in- ... dio-615651

^nice.

ya kinda sweet to see geo still using a 404. if anyone happens to know the names of all the gears that'd be sweet, i only know panda's teenage engineering OP-1 and geo's Moog Sub 37 (whats panda's sequencer thing?). now we just need avey's set-up... i def noticed that for a couple transitions avey was holding his mic up to... something that looked like speakers (a radio?) to get some kind of feedback/ambience building up

An Elektron Octatrack. He used 2 on the Greaper tour, maybe just 1 for AC unless there's another one off to the side not visible in that pic

Geo's also got a RE20 Roland Space Echo & what looks like an Eventide TimeFactor delay in that wicked cool setup

Avey's using an Octatrack too for this tour, along with I think a Moog, and some delay pedals in front of him. Not sure what he's been using to his left.

Pretty sure I spotted a Buchla Music Easel. Sonic Boom said that might be where the Painting With title got its name from.

Can see the Buchla and an octatrack in this vid of Avey from JerHy's ig. Also obviously a keyboard which I assume is the ensoniq archie mentioned. Maybe someone can make out some other stuff, it's kind dark though
Spoiler: show

as somebody who's learning ableton with a 25 key midi controller, can somebody help explain what all this gear is? This is all analog, right? Like would this stuff be useful to me as i progress with digital production or what?

It all depends on what you wanna do, what style of music you wanna make, what sounds you're looking for, etc. the elektron octatrack is a super powerful sampler and sample-mangler that lets you make crazy sounds like the transitions on Panda's 2013 ATP rehearsal. Basically you can assign the knobs to a bunch of different parameters (like pitch, speed, attack, decay etc) and then adjust settings on the fly. It's a little pricey though ($1300)

I don't really know much about the modular synths, but as I understand they're super customizable and basically let you build up synthesizer patches (sound settings) from scratch and really tweak them to get specific sounds. I think they're usually pretty expensive too, unfortunately

Only other piece of gear that I could really comment on would be the sp 404 sx (top-middle of Geo's setup), which I own and can't recommend enough. just a simple no nonsense sampler, really easy to chop up samples into smaller parts then play them using the pads. Lots of effects, the same kind of reverbs and delays that are all over Person Pitch and Merriweather. Only downside is the sequencer kinda sucks and the pads aren't velocity sensitive, so all the samples play back at the same volume. One way to work around that is to use a mixer to manually adjust the volume - AC dudes do this often

Do you have a recommendation on a good sequencer to use to control a drum machine/ monosynth via midi?

I think they said they used it on like half the songs, but that you can't really tell (obviously, haha).

I just wanna chime in real quick on the SP404 discussion. I've owned two of them, and they're great, but it's younger brother, the SP555, which AC also used (Merriweather tour for sure) is definitely a step further. The pads ARE velocity sensitive and I love the sequencer. The effects are slightly different (better imo), and it has an overall warmer tone to it. It feels more fluid and less clunky than the 404. That would only make sense if you've used them both though. My live setup contains both 404 and 555's.

Korg du a bitchin little black jammie with up to 16 steps , and muito options & progmability...
Cheep too ....
If u want more steps / less repeat etc , yr com pu tar mite be best

Mite have missed the details , but Panda Beer's modular stiff is mostly Mutable Instruments from France , Jolly Gist's jammies are Malekko Make Noise & Averys Tared slides the BEMI Buchla Music Easel ....

I guess the defo of a Modular synth is a collections of independant electronic functions that can be 'patched' by the user in almost unlimited ways to create unique and evocative sonic soundscapes .

Can confirm his modular is mostly Make Noise. was just looking at their stuff last night... its all so beautiful but all so expensive...
