There is this really great tumblr user who goes by jessepinkman who creates these song sorters for bands where it's basically a head to head battle between each song to determine how all of the songs of a band's discography ranks for you personally. I discovered him through his Vampire Weekend one and I thought it was a whole bunch of fun, so I contacted him and asked him to do an Animal Collective one. He was nice enough to do it for me, it includes as much of their discography without being too obscure (I don't think that people is on it along with their non-album singles, he put as much on as he could I think, they have a really extensive discography it'd be hard to get everything on there).

This was really hard when you had to choose between things like Pride and Fight and Natural Selection, and I felt like I was confusing it by violating the transitive property, but the ranking seems pretty accurate to me. I'm sad that Infant Dressing Table, Too Soon, and all the B-sides aren't included because I think those would be pretty high up.

Very accurate top 25 and a bottom four of Monkey Riches, Wide Eyed, Father Time and A Manatee Dance is also spot on. Essplode and Alvin Row was a real tough one and I involuntarily winced at things like Water Curses vs. Loch Raven. Truly, I am the superfan's superfan.

Usually refrain from these sorts of things due to the subjective and complex nature of what determines a "favourite", but this was cool. Sorry Alvin Row fans.

But seriously, I just picked based on what songs I would rather hear in any given moment, and that can change day to day. Alvin Row, however, while a brilliant song, is one I have to be ready for - the high frequencies at the start, and how it takes a little to get going... great structure, but an investment to be sure. Just personal preference that I like more "immediate" songs, unless they have something in particular that really strike me (Cuckoo Cuckoo's sample of Liszt's Liebestraum gets me every time). But I'm still psyched by all those songs I listed.

Most of Spirit made it into my top 20, I suppose that's no surprise for me.
Picking between songs on an album wasn't too bad, but I had no idea what to do with matchups like Two Sails on a Sound vs. Who Could Win a Rabbit.
