Mine too. That fast drum beat stuck out big time while the rest of the album blurred together.

Also think this one makes the best use of the hocketing effect

Definitely is underrated. The beat is just so punchy, it's fucking sick.

i changed the speed of this and overlayed it on top of summing the wretch, and the melody is uncanny

It's the most Greaper sounding song to me by far. That outro is pure Greap. I like it a lot though! Seriously those last 3 songs go down so easy.

The best I could make of the lyrics:
Spoiler: show
SUMMING THE WRETCH

??????????
Plugs into a people patch
??? bonds that illustrate
Also start to complicate
Catches in a ?????
Absence makes the sense go dark
All of the intended ????
??????????
Getting screwed
Not much to do when
Noone's watching
Noone's looking
Can you see
SEE
SEE
SEE
SEE
SEE
SEE
SEE
it
:guitar:
Feel the ??? and make a steal(?)
Noone round to see the deed
Surf so strong it's tough to take
Lurches me with none to relate(?)
Things go up that must come down
Don't slow down, don't want to stop
Everyone so keen to float
Bubble up from down below
Wicked loons(?) with none to lose(?) when
Noone's looking
Noone's watching
Can you be
BE
BE
BE
BE
BE
BE
BE
it
:guitar:
So
Don't get caught lost
:guitar:
So
:metal
Don't get caught watching
Don't get caught lost
Don't get caught watching
Don't get caught lost

There's a bell sound in the background at around the 1:00 mark that has the same melody as a part from We Tigers - actually see a lot of similarities between the two songs. So goooooooood

Good luck learning to play this one, Jeremy

On one hand, the part is pretty repetitive. On the other hand, if this pic is anything to go by, he'll be playing it with one bass drum pedal. So that should be fun to watch.

I'm sure he can pull it off, Roses on the Window was pretty tough on the right leg too.

it's not just the kick drum though, those 4-over-3 polyrhythms after each chorus are super tricky! I have faith that Jeremy will nail them tho

Neat song. Caught me off guard the first time with its nursery-rhyme-ness. I feel like it's one of the better uses of the jumpy vocal technique on the album, it wouldn't sound as good without that. \

After the 4th listen, I still hold the opinion that the vocal technique is mildly irritating by the end of the album. it's kind of unlike them to rely on one element so specifically through the album. obviously their previous albums all have aesthetic choices that tie them together, but like this is a really major aspect of the album that gives the songs a samey feel. at least summing the wretch seemed to have used it really well

but like think about what summing would be like if it was the ONLY one that did that. Think about the impact it'd have on first listen

the hocketing is especially weird because it's so obviously a pbvsgr technique, feels like a real rehash. i do agree that it works in this tune but it makes a lot of my initial impressions of the album run together

Yeah, I had to listen to the album three times to remember all of it. Even still, some of the songs aren't sticking with me. This one though, that melody is hard to forget

also, hocketing. TIL theres a word for that

Would anyone on here be interested in sheet music for an arrangement of this song for two vocalists, two percussionists, and a keyboardist? This thread inspired me to transcribe STR to deconstruct it further.

Gah the "don't get caught watching, don't get caught lost" part at the end is so so good. Panda's voice sounds almost holy there

Does anyone else recognize the sample at about 2:07 in the song? I feel like I've heard it before but I can't place it.

This song has grown on me so much. It was by far my least fav on first listen, and I blame that partially on the Amazon samples (or at least my repeated listens to said samples). I had an impression of this song being much different rhythmically than it is. It's so fun to pick out all the little sounds in this song, it definitely feels like one of the most dense.

Totally. I just heard the ascending bell/synth thing that follows the mechanical winds during the SOOOOOO parts, like 2:10. So cool. And all the little chatter that follows it.

dude, this is actually a really good point!! i got a total nursery rhyme vibe from pbvgr. the vibe seems to have kind of bled into PW tracks, and i definitely feel that with "summing the wretch" too

the style, dictation, and melodies seem to mimic old nursery rhymes. the melody has a very innocent, child-like feel.

this is one of my favorite tracks. i love, love, love the autoharp (zither?). idk, i'm just really loving the harp sounds they use on this album

I thought that church bell sound was maybe piano of sorts but whatever it is, it's really gorgeous. I really love the second half of this song and it's made me dig the punchiness of the first section and the dorty flangey bass synth. Really cool palette of sounds, so many little ideas packed into this. Day One reaction, I thought it was Noah's worst song. I'm a dummy, but I also enjoy reflecting on my changing feelings.

are there polyrhythms on this? Isn't it just 4/4 counted in triplets?

Yeah there are parts where the snare drum is playing a pattern where every 4th triplet is accented, it's a 4-over-3 polyrhythm against the quarter note

I'm probably using the word polyrhythm wrong, idk

lol lbz? ya i kinda thought this was thematically a seql to guys eyes struggle. for real tho what else could "don't get caught watching" even mean? sounds like either jo or something more sinister/creepy, like i can kind of think of more abstract deeper interpretations but like hardly.

this might be my favorite song on the album besides golden gal, spilling guts, on delay, bagels in kiev, the burglars, natural selection, floridada, hocus pocus, vertical, lying in the grass, and recycling.
