Trying this again with more context, and if you haven't heard the song yet don't watch this clip from 2007 (unless you want a taste of the track):

Start at 14:30 (time embed doesn't work here).
The sound is almost
identical. Within 3 seconds I thought, "I've heard this before..."
Crazy they revived this one particular intermission and used it for the foundation of a whole new cut.

Having listened to the song now, I think there are similarities for sure but it ain't the same beat.

"the parking lot is way too...." hot/long/high?
this song is nuts. intro is crazy, and those wonky melodic shifts. very taste-y

It's hot yeah, cos I think he's saying he can't walk on it on his bare feet or something

Everything about this song is great to me. Really nails the melodic interplay. Great rhythms and little shifts. Punchy structure, no fluff. I love the lyrical themes too.

It's at least 90% or higher in terms of similarity, and I am honestly shocked more people aren't drawing this comparison. I know it's not exact, but it's such a close match – probably the closest we'll see to a live show directly influencing a Painting With song.

Pandas backing vocals are pretty funny:
"Does this system matter" ("Only if it's vertical")
"Some creatures build themselves a home" ("Can't always be vertical")
"Their worlds a peaceful dome" ("They don't hear the giants say")

"At the tips of cities
windows tracing columns
windows ????? women
vertical in flight
Down below a statue
people standing posing
making good impressions
vertical delight
Lying on a trunk and
waiting to be dreaming
startled by a thumpin
vertical in sight
Lots of people thinkin
thinkin about falling
nothing but erupts so??????
vertical hold tight"
Fav bit of the album

Every time this merges into the next section, it takes me by surprise and makes me happy. Like, hey, it's THIS bit! I think the intro vocal and the little camp beat are so sick and then Noah comes in and starts the main melody and you're like ssssooonnnnn and then Dave's voice morphs into a different harmonic layer and you're like wait wait I'm cummin awwww shit put my balls in some ice cream gnnnhhh, and then the vertigo sound kicks in and you're into a completely different song, about three chord changes, spin you round, your boiling jizz can't even find its way out of your nob end it's so confusing and then SLAMMM into the chorus and the beat toughens up and drives harder like the pumping piston of an amorous fist on your glans. Woah! That's me done. Thanks. Same time tomorrow?

pretty sure some hip-hop producer is gonna sample "vertical" one day
...
also, so AC to use a chorus to sing about crossing a parking lot. classic AC just surrender to them already

this song is much more techno than I expected, that synth sound in the chorus is so old school, in like a nameless boombox 2002 metro montage kind of way
love how the kick pattern matches up with the syllables of the word "vertical"

Absolutely loved getting the official lyrics for this one (those Panda vocals - I didn't even notice most of them!)
Anyways, now when I hear this song, its all

I love those splatters of synth that come in at around 46 seconds, def a good example of the whole painting vibe.

One of the most idiosyncratic parts of the entire album is aveys disposition in the verses. His singin sounds like he's trying to sound perverted almost. Sorta similar to how weird he was at the end of no more running..

can't put my finger on a particular jam, but this beat is reminiscent of atoms for peace/thom yorke rhythmically.
really like the vocals, especially the weird ones at the beginning.

help me guys, I love this song till the crossing the parking lot, I just don't get it, it seems to break the song up and lower the climax to a boring level, how did you guys get into the whole chorus parking lot thing, I want to love that part so much but I just cant

i didnt LOVE it at first either... hm idk tho, seeing how they did it live helped. thinking about how i liked how it brought in images on urban cityscapes while also talking about creatures that live in trees so it has this weird nature vs modern society feeling, and panda's "Vertical!" in the background at the end of each line sounds great. he say "my feet cant" and it makes me think of a persons actual perspective looking down at their feeet and avey said the song was all abt perspective and citys being built vertical and shit... and the verticalizing effect b/w the verse and chorus rlly does get more palatable ovr time but it also is always disorienting and its kind of amazing.
feel like theyre writting is at a really high level here and the lyrical ideas are being integrated into sonic structure and texture rlly well. like the listener cant cross the parkinglot because the song just became 2 weird to adjust to it lol... but pandas back up vox help lead the way..

Love the beat on this and the lyrics are nuts. Still don't have them memorized yet but P-Bears vocals help. I love his delivery on this. The chorus is pop perfection.

I immediately loved this part of the song so I don't know if I can really help you, but...
To me the chorus is really blissed out compared to the relative chaos of the verse/bridge parts. like, if the intro is arriving at the airport, then the verse is the chaos in the terminal and the chorus is when you're finally relaxing in the plane above the clouds

Porbably my favorite track on the whole album. Was wondering, could anybody help me figure out what kind of vocal effect Avey is using during the intro? It sounds like a modded speak and spell or something.

I really like Avey's vocal effects on the "So high it sends a feeling through me" part (pre chorus?). His voice like melts in and out with that weird bubbly flange synth line.

I'm suprised there isn't more talk about how great avey's singing on the first verse is.especially the line "my imagination reaches him forever" . it's one of the sweetest but shortest verses i've ever heard.
