"Weirdest" Animal Collective songs?

My girlfriend who is an abstract painter thinks Lying in the grass is by far the weirdest thing the boys have done, that they are going too far. To me Lying in the grass feels like it ends up achieving a lot of what more orthodox pop songs accomplish like sick driving beat and sensational exciting emotional impetus pushing the song. What songs do you guys think are their strangest?
For instance I think the loooong section of pure screaming in brother sport makes it way more strange.

surely HCTI songs are the weirdest, like two sails
or Tell it to the mountain/pumpkin gets a snakebite off Hollinndagain
or do you mean weird in a different way?

I kinda realized right away that early anco could much more easily be categorized as weird, I guess I wanna know everyone's personal relationship to how certain songs hit them as strange. Like whaddit I done all of a sudden puts me in a hyper intimate space with a friendly huge wide eyed plastic duck and that is more strang to me than their early noisy stuff

Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker actually struck me as one of PB's strangest solo tracks, but I think that's just in the context of everything else he's done

Mouth Wooed Her...Although they may have stranger songs, this one has always stuck out to me as being deliriously strange and unsettling.

DM and Hollind have some pretty weird stuff but that's about it.
I think it's cool how this band sounds utterly weird at first but that weirdness fades and disappears over time. Usually once the hidden melodies reveal themselves. And then I play something in the company of someone else and it's totally alien to them, a wall of noise or a gurgling mass. And it baffles me because I can't revert to my former ears.

surely as an abstract painter she would be used to uncoventional art, esp since compared to their early discog (and experimental music in general) it is not that strange
like what does she think of hollindagain?

For the longest time the weirdest stuff for me was pretty much all of Danse Manatee

. The first time I heard Another White Singer (Little White Glove) I wasn't sure wtf was going on. I love all of it now, but it took quite a few listens to turn me around.

From experience, the female abstract painters I know don't really listen to much experimental music. They're more into contemporary singer-songerwriter stuff like Adelle. Abstract art doesn't always go hand in hand with abstract music
But then again, sometimes I consider myself an abstract painter and I do listen to a good amount of weird noisey stuff. I don't really consider Animal Collective that weird compared to acts like OPN or Lightning Bolt, but like Cans said the weirdness of certain music rubs off over time. Or maybe the weirdness rubs off onto myself, in which case I form a symbiotic relationship with the music

It's true. I went to two liberal art schools for college and for the most part the women painters were more into Beyoncé and other 'vanilla' musicians. I'm not knocking their tastes, but I found it more common for the male painters to be more into weird, experimental music

you just said it was 'vanilla' tho so yeah you are knocking their taste
you may have gone to a hundred colleges, your empirical evidence is still weak and making gendered comments in such a way is shitty

What is wrong with you two? I did not mean vanilla as an insult. I meant it in terms of more mainstream, popular music. I was not making fun of their tastes, nor being elitist. I am just expressing MY own experience, which is that of the female abstract painters I know, most are not into weird music, but I find the male abstract painters to be more into that kind of stuff (stuff like Animal Collective, music that most of this forum seems to like). I am not saying this is a universal truth, it is just what I have noticed

ANYWAYS... Musically, when I first heard Winter Wonderland, it seemed like it should be on the soundtrack for some late 90s/early 2000s movie about some sheltered white guy moving away from home to go to college and learning to cut loose with his new bros while falling in love with and ultimately getting the quirky girl he met at orientation. It stands out from their entire discography in the weirdest way.

^ that kind of story was the kind of thing I wanted to hear about
This is my first time posting or making a thread and I'm elated that there is internet fighting already!
She's into what I feel are credibly creative music artists like Fennesz, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Microphones but she's only heard from sung tongs till now.
The Intro of winters love sounds medieval to me which no other anco track sounds like, anco sounds primordial and ancient but not castles and princes usually.
Another moment that stirs me is later on in No More Runnin when avey sounds like he is super exasperated but is trying to restrain it, sounds creepy and dangerous to me.

I can see Lying in the Grass as being weird tho
the switch-ups feel slightly awkward at first, but then reveal themselves over time
their early stuff was more "soupy" and their more recent stuff usually follows more consistent beats/moods
this song is catchy, but in a way that strikes me as odd in a way they've never done

the weirdest to me is either that stretch from i see you pan -> forest gospel but i also love that stretch, the feedback loops and scratching towards the end of pride and fight give me the tinglies
i think rosie oh is also really fucking weird, it sounds like standard anco fare but everything sounds like a detuned carousel that's slowly spinning into space

I think things like Tuvin, ice cream factory and the Pumpking trilogy . put me in a weird mood mostly .. kinda unsettled in a way that anything on here comes the indian and etc ...
might be the unfinished feeling of it
laying in the grass seems kinda strange kind of in the way it reminds me of the live version of fireworks (the one with the dave talking sample during the jam) ((RR OUURRERR EEAARRRERER AWRRRHRHR))
everything on that song seems unconventional but it works ..
also my favorite colors was always kinda strange . i guess almost every animal collective song could have a weirdness to it - or something . i don't like that word

no ones laughing at your for going to art school (i went to art school), people are just trying to politely point out that you are presenting your argument solely based on a personal observation of a sex/gender binary that is fundamentally sexist and false. I know many female painters of all kinds who are into waaaaaay weirder more challenging shit than animal collective--and that frankly would consider animal collective to be way too "vanilla" for their tastes--u dig? also Beyonce is not "vanilla." she be challenging and pushing the boundaries of her genre same way our boys do theirs.
....back on topic: maybe its just cuz its so fresh, but LITG has been really revealing itself to be one of the weirder songs in my mind. compositionally they are taking some really big risks that I haven't really heard since the weirder songs on feels.
I recently saw david rosenboom perform a piece where he wrote a melody and then had a computer program algorithmically create thousands of counter melodies by analyzing the relationships in the origin melody and the piece was composed entirely out of these countless "propositional melodies" all tangentially related to a single structure but not actually containing that structure.... Im butchering the explanation because the only thing i know anything about is applying colored mud to fabrics with animal hair fixed to the ends of sticks.... but this method of composing reminds me a bit of the feel in LITG in that SOMEWHERE in that song there is or was a really catchy pop song that is still recognizable but it seems hinted at or offered up as a proposition as opposed to actually just being there....but its like still kinda there

david rosenboom owns and that is a clever approach to algorithmic composition because of course the results aren't likely to be as "good" as what you actually wrote so it's a neat exploration of negative space. do you remember the title?
