Touring Drummer?

So, Jeremy Hyman has been posting pics on IG of a new drum set up and he appears to be in a rehearsal space. Could he be touring with AnCo? Based on what we've heard so far, the vocals on Painting With are complex af. Would make sense that Panda couldn't handle live drumming this time around. However, we also haven't heard a ton of true drums in the new material- maybe someone who has listened to the bathroom recordings and Amazon previews can weigh in more on this. I commented on the photo and asked if he was rehearsing with Anco and if he was gonan be at Dan Deacon's San Fran show, he ignored the first question but he did responded about San Fran. Figure he would have just said "no" to the AnCo question since he took the time to respond. Maybe it's just my wishful thinking but that would be so sweet.

Good catch. It looks like he all but officially confirmed it in the comments section of the image in question
Which makes me very pissed that I'm not seeing them on this tour :x

that'd be wild. i dont really see any indication why it would be animal collective, though.

He just finished touring with Dan. He responded directly to my question about playing Dan's one-off show on January 29th by saying, "See you at the Filmore" but ignored my question about AnCo. The caption "maybe baby" came before anyone had directly asked about Animal Collective (at least publicly on IG). He said, "to be announced" when people were asking who he was rehearsing with but did not respond directly to any of the AnCo speculation.

Would be very odd seeing them play live with anybody other than a member of the group or somebody like Doctess/Kria who was married to Avey.

But, then again, they have guests on this album who have been well established for decades, which to me is quite a bit different than other guests like Vashti, Kria, and Kang because those people were always part of the underground scene.

But this album has Colin Stetson and John Cale. Maybe they will be touring with non-AnCo people. They seem intent on shaking things up less in a stylistic way (which they have always done) and more in a structural way.

They should bring on Michael Winslow full time for this tour, I'm sure he's more than capable of recreating Colin Stetson's part and maybe even John Cale's who knows

Oh the things I would do for a complete bootleg of that show. Easily the best night of music of my life! I've probably listened to that Purple Bottle more than any other song.

blow this image up. this is the thumbnail from AnCo's instagram post "east" which showed them in their rehearsel space. the post itself is deleted. probably because they realized the floor of the space in the video completely matches the floor in Jeremy's post:

Image

look at that shit and tell me it's not the same rehearsal space.

edit: not to mention, there's a very similar keyboard stand visible in both images.

those x-style keyboard stands are extremely common, industry standard

I mean, I don't see anything that indicates that it's not AC, but I kinda doubt it mostly because of the sheet music. I feel like if JerHy was playing w them, they would just jam out the songs and feel it out. AC has always had that loose style of live performance, and from what I can tell from live vids that's how Slasher Flicks operated too. plus, aren't these songs supposed to be short and somewhat poppy? Seems weird to have sheet music for verse-chorus-verse type of stuff

I wouldn't be mad if he was playing with them tho! Jeremy is a monster on the kit

Not that I buy into this theory of him playing with AC but if I remember correctly he did have sheet music and note pages by his kit during the slasher flicks shows.

I was thinking about those keyboard stands too, but Dan Deacon has pretty much the same ones so I don't think that proves anything

Having said that those two pictures do look to be in very similar spaces. Also Jeremy said that who he's playing with is yet to be announced, but by responding to Bulimic Vegetarian's question he confirmed he's plying with Dan Deacon next week, which means the other announcement is still yet to be made. Dan Deacon and AC also have no conflicting tour dates this year so it does work out logistically.

I think you guys might be right

Maybe he only responded to the 2nd question because he was tagged in it? Not trying to be pedantic, just playing devil's advocate

That's true. It's good to play devil's advocate.

I'm just cautiously optimism mostly because we know a week ago it is very likely Jeremy was not rehearsing for upcoming Dan Deacon shows since it looks like he was trying out new gear and probably already knows Dan's material pretty well. Also I think Jeremy lives in LA and I'm pretty sure since the new year AC has been rehearsing in LA up until very recently (judging by Avey's insta it looks like he is currently in DC). We won't know for sure for a couple weeks, but it does line up

SLEUTHS!

And yes, there would be no reason for Jeremy to be rehearsing any Dan Deacon material. Dan's tour is essentially over, he's just announcing a few one-off shows here and there. He is either going to confirm Animal Collective or announce a tour with a new band.

i was thinking about this earlier, and nothing about the percussion in floridada screams "we need jeremy hyman!" to me. like, he would probably be bored playing that.

i guess maybe the other stuff could be more wild for him to play, but yeah, just a thought i had.

Yeah, that was the only flaw in my theory. But there's a lot of record left to hear, so fingers crossed for DRUMZ. Even if the percussion isn't crazy complex, the decision to go with Jeremy may just be a matter of trust and compatibility, lotsa shared life space on a World Tour. Jeremy's already been vetted by Avey in that regard. He's also a Baltimore boy.

i really like this theory and i hope it's the case
because having heard the album, if they were doing live drums they would need jeremy because he could recreate the rhythmns flawlessly and also add flavor

ps the structural changes in the album definitely warrant sheet music

but on the flipside, they could also just do all the drum parts via geo triggering loops

only track that really using live drums a lot is the burglars with the snare rolls

I was wondering how PB was gonna play the beats in Lying in the Grass while singing, seems like it'd be tricky. So maybe they do need a touring drummer... hmm

I don't have IOS and it's driving me crazy! But based on y'all's feedback, sounds the theory could be legit. He's one of my favorite people to watch drum live.

Who are some of your favorite drummers?
First three that came to my head are Zack Hill, Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Christopher Hrasky (Explosions in the Sky)... And Peebs of course.

unless they decide to program the drums in samplers or something, i think there's a real possibility of jeremy drumming on the tour

Not only do I think JH will be playing with AC on this tour, Colin has one solo show booked in March and could play live. It seems like there's a lot of room on the songs we have heard and that the woodsinds have really filled out space where synth would be. I think we may see a 5 piece.
