Please, help.

I pre-ordered Painting With (I'm a sheep so I got the PB cover) and I've dutifully listened to Flori-flori-flori-flori-flori-da like a billion times, and I'm tentatively excited, but I'm still struggling to dig into Centipede Hz. So I figure why not warm to this other record that I never warmed to while I wait?

I like "Amanita" an awful lot. If that's saying anything.

I'm a Strawberry Jam / Sung Tongs kinda guy, hooked on 2004-era live recordings and all the traditional acoustic sets on YouTube and whatnot. Not sure if that helps.

To me, it's busy. It's heavy. It contains multitudes and all that. It's frantic. And not in the same way that some of the live shows were all those things. I'm no expert.

I want to like it.

Help.

Also, first post. I've been lurking for a few months and the awful end to the Painting With post got me interested in speaking up, for some reason.

Don't worry about it, basically. They're my favourite band by far, I'm 35 and they made me really feel like a kid again when I found them eight or nine years ago. I don't really like CHz that much for reasons outlined in the CHz thread on the front page. That's OK because they've made so so much incredible music, it doesn't all have to hit the spot for me.

just think of chz as their dense, pseudo hard rock tropical dad rock album. i think some of it is supposed to be vaguely corny. they wanted to make something heavy, rlly 'live', and insrumental that would scare off the dissaffected and more sheepish of the MPP bandwagoners. try to focus on the playing, cuz they fucking jam so hard all over this record. id ask u why udont like it but maybe thatd be a dumb question cuz its become accepted that chz is the one thats only 'aight'/bad. pretty much my fave tho

Yeah, still my favorite (active) band, for sure.

Basically, I just need a change of perspective. It's okay if it's not my taste.

I mean, I like "Amanita" enough to say "Hey, at least I got to add a top-20 all time track to my list" and move on.

I'd say get in a rockin' mood and crank it in the car on a sunny afternoon drive. I'm obsessed with this album start to finish. the whole alien band transmission concept is just kick ass in my opinion. father time and pulleys are so groovy and applesauce is mind blowing. i don't there are any other songs like these songs.. i love them all. but i'm a fiend, and maybe an alien
Edit: also i think they stepped up the lyrics game on this album and it was sweet to watch avey transition to a more positive narrative from the touring to the album, especially on monkey riches

Perfect.

I'm driving down the Texas coast and across the border into Mexico this weekend to try to find and photograph (not eat) a rare crow. Maybe this is the road trip where I learn to appreciate the album?

I'm a total fanboy so I instantly "liked" CHz. But it took many listens for me to love it. I came around mostly from listening to the live material. The album is extremely busy. It's hard to discern what each member is playing. That's how the live versions helped. I would suggest watching the Tivoli show on youtube or any of the clips the band uploaded themselves. Once I recognized what each member was bringing to the sound, it really clicked for me. The alien rock band concept is dead on. Live at 9:30 is also something I would dig into if you want to unlock the power of CHz. Anyways here's a link to Tivoli. Enjoy!

i think new town burnout is actually one of their most beautiful songs.....im a super huge fanboy so when i first heard the album on day 4 of the Centi fm stream i was instantly hooked...but just listen to new town burnout..and listen to it again and again!!!!! there are layrs upon layers to that masterpiece. the children choir going OH OH OH OH OH OH, the way it sounds so dramatic, the lightning sounding synths, sounds like ur on a jetpack through some sort of white crystal land..and panda's voice is beautiful. im not fking with ya

also, on amanita, i feel like floridada picks up on the vibes of the last section of that jam. in a distant way, though - maybe it's just the upbeat mood

ntb is amazing/epic but mght be the biggest stinker on here for me paradoxically at the same time. noahs lyrics/melody in that one seem pretty damn uninspired, but i do like them in the way that they accompany the band rlly rocking out/jamming well i guess.

lke the song itself without the flourishes and the sweet break in the middle sounds like the sweetly stupid step-child of the tomboy songs... much love tho sorry for the negative vibes

Just to chime in, I lived in Wakayama City for most of 2005 actually. And I visited the Wakayama prefecture again for ten days in 2008.

The Tamaulipas Crow.

It's an ugly little thing, all scrappy from the ground up, and it says "Garlic," for some reason.

I'm not making any of this up.

Okay, so to preface Centipede Hz is by far the most meaningful AC release to me, and pretty reached a synchronicity with my psyche than any piece of music I've ever encountered. In everything about it -- melodies, pacing, track-order, concept, overall musicality... there was a stretch of 8 months, at least, where every day there would be a melody of it in my head, Applesauce, Moonjock, Amanita, Father Time, every song really... It's this amazing thing that an album predicated on the mysterious nature of our memories and their conjunction with the future has become that very thing for me, this obscure artifact that possesses so much of me, yet it's passed like an era of my life, and I can't quite locate these things in the music any more.

I think that you need to have repeated listens to the album. Like, it's what did it for me, realizing it one session after another. But, not to say you haven't... it's the sort where I literally feel my imagination inside its fragmented radio textures, dispersing then rejoining into an epiphany every 5 minutes... If you can try to see it as a spacial landscape (in the way John Cage describes music) then you can value how seamlessly put together every part of it is, and really what a miraculous touch of the delicious for the band, this red, aching motherboard with green bongos underneath bumping a streaking vocoder of yellow light, pixelated instantly.

this. CHz wasn't really a spoonful of sugar, more of an ounce of cough syrup. doesn't taste the best, but after it absorbs into your bloodstream you start to feel it.

also, it's okay if you're not into it. I mean, there is always styles and sounds that won't mesh with your personality. nothing wrong with that my friend

Word.

You guys are so excellent.

It's 5:52 AM and my back feels like a broken candelabra but at least I've got friends.

Okay, so CHz this weekend and nothing more.

Oh, and no mushrooms. I burned out on those things years ago.

Wait, and maybe I haven't fully expressed my desire to find and photograph this crow.

It is, pathetically, my life's work.

I'm 34; I drift.

I got snakebit, once, waiting to see a Tam, with my cheeks in the long grass at the back of the Brownsville garbage dump.

I've sat for eleven hours in the wet lap of some noxious Mexican comiseria in hopes that the stinky trash would call him to me. Oh, but to no avail.

I've spent thousands of dollars on various trips to locate him and commit him to film.

(It's not so bad getting snakebit that close to the border. Codeine is like way more than over-the-counter in these parts, you see. And still.)

So, those of you that love Centipede Hz, do I travel into the album's heart with the proper arms and armor? Or what?

Go for it, if the sun has set and the orange street lights are all around than you can't go wrong. Remember, "I imagine time / he's got real big hands... and bigger plans."

Sorry if anyone has said this already, but imo despite how dense the album is I think it sounds a lot better on some nice speakers rather than headphones. It might not make or break the album for you, but if you haven't already try listening to it nice and loud on a stereo.

I'm leaving for Mexico in 47 hours and change.

I've got lots of advice here. I'm gonna try it out on my car stereo, since those are probably the best speakers I own. I'm a headphones guy. Though I won't attempt it on mushrooms, I will no doubt consume way too much Mexican beer and listen to it in that state. Maybe that counts? Beer's free down there when you pay for food.

Plus, after years of covertly travelling to Mexico to acquire substances which are fully legal for possession on the good side of the border, and maybe not so much here, I've managed to become somewhat immune to the effects of the local water supply.

So if I capture a Tam with a photograph, I'll be sure to share. But don't expect much. This is not an attractive bird. Even for a crow.

Garlic. Garlic. Garlic.
