When I first began to listen to Animal Collective I did not know anything about Avey Tare or Panda Bear or Geologist or Deakin. I was enjoying the creativity of the music.
At some point I began to see band members, think who's who in the band, their part in the music, what they do, the band dynamics, etc.
I think it is much better to completely forget Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist, and Deakin while you listen to Animal Collective, or any band.

I dig what you're saying OP but for me once I get really into a band I wanna know about the people who are in it. Ultimately it's the music that's most important. It's different for a group like AC tho because each album has different contributors so it's a natural tendency to think about what individual member brings to the group sound.

Imagine what the AC discography would be like if all 4 members played on every album

I cut lil holes on each end of two gourds and then hollow them out. I press the gourds against my ears and then cover my head in a thin layer of pizza dough. Only then am I able to proceed and listen to music.
