Crestone is the feature debut from Marnie Ellen Hertzler. Scored by Deakin and Geologist.

In a world that undulates between fact and fiction, digital and physical, a group of SoundCloud rappers lives a solitary, post-societal existence in the desert town of Crestone, Colorado. Once a religious and spiritual mecca for many, Crestone’s endless sand dunes, waterfalls, and dark caves act as a backdrop for images of tattooed bodies, cosplay wardrobes, and clouds of weed smoke. "Crestone" explores the often hidden aspects of collaboration and friendship as well as the human desire to persist against all odds. What does music sound like if there is no one left to repost and share it?

A little less than a year ago we were excited to announce the debut screenings of Crestone at the True/False and SXSW film festivals, with an original score by Deakin and Geologist. That was in early March, 2020. Things changed around then, but the Crestone crew pushed on with virtual screenings and we took the music and put together an LP. We're now excited to announce that both are getting official releases. Check below for all the relevant information. Link in our bio to presave the score and preorder the LP.

i've actually listened to the soundtrack rip a bunch. i think it's good! yeah the notification had me excited for a wide range of possibilities but this is a good outcome for sure (better than like a PW soundboard. worse than a 04 soundboard)

Lol

This film looks sick. One critic said it reminds them of Gummo so I'm gonna have to give this a watch

Not been around for a while because my life is now a relentless 'key worker' fuckscape and the brief respite of watching Godzillas but this is something to look forward to. I don't know how I feel about 'Animal Collective' as the artist name but all the best to them and looking forward to listening. Hope everyone here is well. I can't believe how badly we fucked up corono.

Yep pretty sure that it’s only a ‘proper’ AC album when panda is on, hence there is no header theme here for Tangerine Reef

I am absolutely hyped for this! So excited to hear what this iteration of Animal Collective expresses itself as. The preview in the youtube clip sounds SOO good.

And for all of y'all saying this isn't an official animal collective release, you are wrong.

It was ghost-written by Kanye and McCartney

nice chill ambient project, honestly one of their better experiments in regards to that genre. i dig it, especially the first track and this one:

I really dig the second half. The rain song sounded like something off of Campfire Songs. I bet the music works so much better within the context of the film.

Wow, I'm REALLY liking this. Big TTG/Oddsac/tangerine reef vibes but then it becomes it's own thing triumphantly. Seems even more put together and realized then those projects, imo. Magical.

Enjoying this quite a bit, sorta feels like Sleep Cycle's quiet brother. Only thing is that I kinda wish they hadn't included dialogue from the movie in the actual tracks, I feel like all it does is break up the vibe.

I love this! Very comforting as far as their more abstract music goes. Love how lush it all is, none of the samples are really spooky or unsettling (not to say spooky and unsettling = bad)

I know you're being facetious but I really don't see the issue with the little clips of dialogue in the soundtrack

I assumed this would be a 'just the sides' kind of take on an AC record and it is that, but that's a very enjoyable thing.

Listening to this again. It's good! Will probably fade as a curiosity in the AC catalogue, and doubt I'll revisit it that often. But it's wonderfully atmospheric and warm

Reviving this thread cause a couple of people had talked about revisiting it as a way to pass the wait for IIN.

Giving it a focussed listen right now and Dome Yard is a really gorgeous start. The autoharp (or whatever it is) is lush. Reeks of Deeks!

Eye In The Sky sounds very Geo. Some fun stereo panning.

Boxing is a sweet ambient piece. Remind me of Taylor Dupree and microambient kind of stuff.

Scavengers is mostly movie dialogue though I dig the oddsac like sounds that burst open as they transition into Wake Up Ryan. A few of these tracks definitely sound like they’d benefit from some Avey input. They sound a little like TR without Avey’s guitar or vocal. Cool stuff though a little slight.

Benz’s Dream is one of the few I’ve listened to a number of times. 2 and a half mins of beautiful Deakin piano. Quite cinematic.

Sloppy’s Dream sounds great when the main flittering melodies start floating around.

Sand That Moves is a favourite. Reprising the Dome Yard autoharp type sound. Some lovely Deakin acoustic guitar picking with lots of delay and a sweet main melody/phrase.

Over the Sangre… might reprise some sounds from earlier? Eye In The Sky maybe? More movie dialogue. It’s ok I guess. I do appreciate that the dialogue is reasonably vague and doesn’t clearly relate to specific elements of the plot. Haven’t seen the movie so like being able to keep this kinda separate and stand alone, especially because everyone says the film is complete ass.

EBS is like a 2021 equivalent of the dial up modem sound. Nothing much to this one.

Sad Boy Sleeping is super cool though. Sparse piano chords, some tinny percussive sound and wordless Deakin vocals. The only track with any Deakin vocals right? It’s a sad and beautiful lil piece.

Ramshack has more ebbing and pulsing ambience. Again a little like half a TR or TTG piece.

Smoke… is another piece of sparse electronic ambience with some film chatter. This one works better than some others for me though. The dialogue is low in the mix and the track moves through a bunch of really engaging little passages with lots of textural variety.

I like the way Zapata Falls pairs the waterfall field recordings with all of the zipping and bubbly electronics. It’s a cool track.

Oh California sounds like classic AC acoustic guitar. Chords strummed in quick, droning downstrokes. Brief but cool.

Cotton Candy Sky is really widescreen and pretty. Big waves of warm fuzzy ambience and more gorgeous piano. It’s not a sound heard often from AC but it’s very pretty.

I think the winners/favourites here for me are Dome Yard, Benz’s Dream, Sloppy’s Dream, Sand That Moves, Sad Boy Sleeping, Smoke…, and Cotton Candy Sky.

Curious to hear what others think.

Lots of cool textures and interesting little pieces in here though ultimately will still remain a kind of curiosity that I occasionally pop on.

Mostly a lurker here, but I wanted to pop into the chat to say that I actually liked the movie all right, not sure why it seems to get the hate it does. A little abstract sure, and the stars of the movie are def naive and a little bit like Peter Pan lost boys if they were SoundCloud rappers lol. But I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the extremely flawed dream they were living, and thought the film did a good job of blurring where that dream begins and the reality of their situation ends. The soundtrack helps beautifully with that, contrasting Deakin’s and Geo’s beautiful distant dream space with the silly SoundCloud trap that these boys are producing. I get not liking the stars of the movie, they’re kinda coasting on an impossible dream and don’t seem to have a very mature understanding of what they’re even doing. But I appreciate the escapism of it all, and I think if you can look past the judgement of those characters and let yourself in on their temporary dream it’s actually a nice movie! Just my two cents.

Welcome! Nice post - definitely makes me think its worth giving the film a chance.

I just don't really watch much tv/film so honestly will probably never get around to it!
