Thoughts on Danse Manatee?

I know we don't usually make threads about individual albums but I feel like Danse doesn't get talked about that much here and doesn't get enough love in general. It seems like most people (AC fans or not) who have heard this album think it sucks but that's probably because it honestly takes many, many listens to understand properly. It's such a unique and atmospheric album and some of the greatest stuff AC has ever done is on here, Meet the Light Child and Ahhh Good Country in particular.
I'm just curious as to what the popular opinion is on here towards this album.

On a scale on 1 to 10, I'd give it a 7, no more no less. Not my favorite at first, but like Spirit it began to grow on me and now I don't have a problem listening to the entire thing. I really enjoy some songs like Meet the Light Child, Ahhh Good Country and Runnin the Round Ball, but I'd still give it a 7. Wow I just read your post and saw we had the same songs in common. Awesome, you must be cool too

It has some good songs like Essplode and The Living Toys, and some shitty ones, like Bad Crumbs and Meet The Light Child. Not my least favorite AC release, but far from my faves. I wish they didn't decide o make the album 45% bass, 45% treble, and 10% mids.

I guess meet the light child is 2deep4m3 then. I can't really say anything positive about it. The Living Toys has that crazy guitar + drums part plus the creepy lyrics, it really keeps you on your toes.

Meet the Light Child is like 4 songs in 1 for me, but it took ages for me to love every part of it.
I like the really intense part of Living Toys but the rest kinda bores me.

I'm with Camino, Light Child >>>> Living Toys
That being said, In The Singing Box trumps both of them

Essplode is probably one of my favorite AC songs ever. There are some other pretty good songs too, like Runnin the Round Ball, Another White Singer, Lablakely Dress (nobody's mentioned that one yet) Ahhh Good Country.
clearly not their best release but still solid.

I love just about every song on Danse. Probably my least favorite though, to be honest.

I can't even rank Danse amongst their other albums because i get a completely different experience with it than i do with any other AC release, it really is one of a kind, there are barely any similar sounding albums anywhere by anyone that i know of.

I was scared of it as I was getting into Animal Collective and people seemed lukewarm on it. But I jammed it and loved it. It's vastly underrated in my opinion. Panda drumming, Geo coming up, rad lyrics, rad melodies. What's not to love?

It's definitely a great album, one of my favorite live eras too.
Panda's singing on lablakely dress (live and on the album) is one of my favorite AC things ever.

I listened to Danse in full for the first time in a while today.
Actually I forgot how much I love it!
It might be one of my favorites right now for sure!

No one has mentioned in the singing box. It is the best song on the album.

I really like your comparison to Spirit here, Calvin. Spirit is definitely the more "immediate" album, and I was even obsessed with it for a little while, but after coming out of that obsession, I also felt that it lacked a little something that Danse and the later albums had.

I started a visual project based off Danse once.
If I can find any of what I did, I will post it here!
That was actually the song that I started the visuals with! I used footage from the zoo!
That is such a great song!

So all the video files from my Danse Manatee project are (they MIGHT be) on my hard drive, which is in Scotland.
I'll have to wait until I move down there in September to post it.
I might work on other portions of it this summer.

One of my favorite albums for sure. Can't believe someone tried to say Bad Crumbs is a bad song, IT'S LIKE THE FIRST REAL PANDA AC SONG BROS
it's like you are walking around a forest and you are way too high and your paranoia is making the woods feel evil
Also a personal story:
When I first got into AC it was all about Strawberry Jam, and from that album I branched out into Feels and Sung Tongs. But for awhile those were all I had heard. And then this awesome video (that I haven't been able to find since I first saw it) got posted on p4ork of them playing Fireworks into Essplode and it was the best thing I had ever seen. And I NEEDED to find this Essplode song.
But it took me awhile to get Danse Manatee for some reason. Just had a hard time finding it on the interwebs. And this one night I was at a party, this bro I knew was playing AC jams on his ipod and I took at look at his pod and he had EVERY AC album. And I saw the Danse cover and was like, DAMN. I GOTTA GET IT.
So I got it. And was insanely disappointed. For like a day(prolly more). It just took me awhile because I still had to process all there other early work. HCTI clicked instantly for me, and then Spirit became my favorite album of all time for a long time. But then finally, one day my boy Fritz (aka Dead in Light) got Danse on vinyl and we had a real magical listen and I was like damn, "this album is perfect".
Cool sotry bor
