So this kills me when this happens...I was a Tomboy era boot freak and there was version of Benefica that I cant seem to find. The version I'm talking about is the same as it ended on record except for during the two chorus's when Noah sings "than wanting to WIIIIIIEEEEIIIIEEEEIIIEEEIIIEEEN" he sings that in a falsetto back and forth in a descending pattern.

It sounds like he's singing "than to Wayyyy-eeeeeeeeeeee-aaaaaaayyy---eeeeeeeeeee----Ayyyyyyy----eeeeeeee----oooooooh" and it turns that song into a tragic Disney-esque ballad that crushes my subconscious.

BUT I CANT FIND IT. So I'm doomed to listen to all the live versions of the song until I finally find the show he did it at.

I can never get enough of all the different ways he would try singing parts or like, when he would do those crazy blurts over parts. There was some real freedom in those vocals. One example when he first started playing Surfer Hymm he would go into the choruses with a, like, "OOOHH BOWW!!!"

All the alterations to the phrasings are a joy, anyone got any other favorites?

I dont have any examples off the top of my head but to add to ur point ab his vocal style in this era, I never understood why every journalist was so critical of his vocal style at the time. That "raping an animal" quote blows the burrito windshield comment out of the water. I really like the harsher moments in these performances.

This isn't from that era but I love the way he does that weird growly delivery on the last chorus of Surfer's Hymn from 2014.

Yea, goddamn, the internet has no shame. I love how the melodies are so long and stretched out, its really fun to sing along to and harmonize with. You can find so many different ways to sing to it based just off of little things he'd try live. I loooved all that gravely voice stuff. Always wish it showed up more on records than just live but I'll take what I can get
