Collected Animals

Apologies if this is too similar to the mega mix thread, but it also feels like it's distinctly the opposite of the point of that one. I've tasked myself with combining my favorites from the two "sister records" into a semi-coherent, non-double-album affair. It's been VERY difficult, not the least because I love all of these songs... But also fun to at least attempt to make it flow as one short(er) thing. Here's what I have so far:

4. Broke Zodiac
5. Stride Right
6. Gem & I
7. Magicians From Baltimore
8. Royal & Desire

total length 43 minutes and 41 seconds. kinda looks like a 70s prog rock album tracklist lol

i remember after the 2019 shows i really just wanted an album that went like

A1 cherokee
A2 24
A3 prester john
A4 strangers
A5 downdowndowndown

B1 defeat

and i didn't really care all too much what happened to the other songs lol

of course getting into this kinda what-if-ing is fraught for me because like, there's a pretty massive mental gulf between cherokee the idealized musical concept that existed in my head from late 2019 to late 2021 and cherokee track number six on the 2022 record time skiffs, and the ideal album above has the former instead of the latter. same deal with downdowndown and 24 (i will never stop missing avey's perfect pure "sing your song and fly on by" chorus lyrics). so i still stand by that tracklisting with the asterisked disclaimer that it can't quite exist outside of the imagination (and also that's probably too much music to squeeze onto side 1, get rid of 24 if necessary)

This is nice

I was experimenting with this myself and came on here to see if anyone else has the same thoughts. My self imposed rules was to make the album from the two albums that was 40-50 mins if I didn't choose defeat and 1 hour if I did choose defeat. I feel like 40-50 mins is usually a perfect length for an album, but since defeat is at the end of my tracklist, I feel like you get a satisfying album up to that point and then Defeat is you're beautiful epilogue.

Having King's Walk and Prester John as the first two tracks I feel set the tone for the album. It was incredibly hard to strip the tracklist down this much! There's some of my favs not here but I feel like the flow works best with these:

4. Stride Ride
5. Cherokee
6. We Go Back
7. Royal and Desire
8. Defeat

they really could've just gone genie's>zodiac>magicians on one side of wax (20 min.) and defeat on the other and had the most epic single lp ever........ damn

This is basically an hour, so maybe too long, but I feel that this would be the greatest album ever made.
