Direction of next album

Not the leftovers coming this Autumn but the actual next album.
I would love an AC ska album. Feels like the only music they have not done apart from whatever the hell desert space radio rock was supposed to be.
Geo skanking on an organ and Dave doing a cod-patois while running on the spot.

The dream is a return to something wildly experimental and weird. I would kill for an Animal Collective industrial/no-wave record. But I think the chances of that ever happening at this point are next to zero.
I think Deakin will probably keep on piano/keyboard for the next project. He seems pretty into that stuff right now. I don't see PB keeping on the drums. Maybe the introduction of a new uncommon instrument for Geo - bagpipes maybe?

ideally: more peculiar instruments, no guitars
more ideally: clear autechre influence

I think what Panda's calling his bendy guitar could go well alongside Deakin's wistful piano stuff. I'd want some dissonance build around that pairing. But I feel like we're heading toward more acoustic instruments, oddly employed.

I really really hope the new sound will be Panda-driven like MPP. Panda’s recent solo work could really bring them somewhere new

Feeling it will be more electric following the more traditional ensemble of panda on a full kit with deakin/avey swapping piano/guitar/ass guitar duties and geo rocking the gurdy. i think some kind of blend of neurons and ends meet from the panda bootlegs with perhaps some more freeform-y stuff like s of e and suspend the time in there. i also think it might be electric guitar based for whatever reason unrelated to what i just typed

I can see them digging into the house, repetitive electronic outfit again, just more in sync with their newer fleshed out rock bandy soundscape instead of being primarily sampled based. I can see it due to all the influences on the recent solo works and by how much they love the digitakt that they do something that some might say is an "evolved MPP" with Deakin.

Hoping it's truly something out of left field. Something heavier maybe, brainier on the sound design side of things.

This would really surprise me. It seems their sound design-as-songwriting days were a product of their younger/hungrier creative eras. They’ve heavily evolved into a kind of sound-design-as-shell-for-singer/songwriter-song formula

(i honestly think it's gonna sound fundamentally pretty similar to what they're doing right now, the only switch up i might expect is panda ditching the traditional drum kit and/or avey ditching the bass guitar. i think the days of ravenously searching for a big new sound each record are probably over now that they've come down to earth, which is fine)

agreed. I still think they have it in them if something gets them really zoned though, so remaining optimistic

Fuck just thought about it and you're right.
Natural Selection, Summing and maybe On Delay are very skadjacent (ska-adjacent).

maybe not often just piano and guitars at the same time (some stuff on pullhair rubeye/im your eagle kisser), and i guess they haven't done anything that's really solely piano with nothing else, i guess i'm just feeling like sung tongs/pullhair rubeye/young prayer type stuff. also back to basics prob isn't the best characterization, since that isn't the very first era of their discog, just want more like stripped down/acoustic/naturalistic type stuff. i feel like i just want their songwriting to shine through without any frills
probably a dumb take, but i almost feel like geo being on an album sort of prevents them from doing something fully stripped down unless it's just 2 or 3 of the others, cause since he rarely is on an acoustic instrument (guess hurdy gurdy counts) there's always gotta be some sort of whirring buzzing soundscapey thing going on lol. often that adds to their music for sure but i wish that didn't prevent them from also doing more spacious fully acoustic stuff

I was being a little snarky and I think I got what you meant. But yeah that’s interesting that such basic textures are so unusual for the full band stuff. I think the recent soundtrack work is probably the closest?
As a separate digression isn’t it kind of incredible that ac has basically had a guy just doing like little sounds for all of their live shows for almost like 25 years?? Like there are definitely points where those are more foundational structural elements but there were a lot of years of just whirs buzzes and frogs right?? Such a gift, genuinely, that they figured out so quickly how to make that work

i think hes always added a lot of harmonic content as well as just textures.. just not so obvious, like the bigfoot howl in purple bottle.. synths in danse and hcti.. have to think of it as almost percussion cuz a lot of those noises fit the frequency range of things like shakers, ride cymbals etc. sonic excitement feeling

I’ve always been envious of geo’s lot in life, not that I know he has it great or anything, but he managed to entrench himself in a top-tier band without being a proper songwriter afaik

I also want to make it clear that geo is absolutely a central part of the band and I don’t think their sound would have stuck the same way without him. More just acknowledging how lucky we are (not how lucky he is!) that nobody from outside tried to push him out, or that he’s only a studio guy and not such a critical part of their live sound. Like what are the right analogues? Joe Hahn??

Yee, wasn’t trying to downplay his role. He does great work, but it’s probably a more simplified intuitive process as far as what he needs to do to make his mark. Just think it would be so fun to have an energetic influence on two (or three) songwriting geniuses
