This was only behind Defeat for me with the boots, then followed by OG Cherokee. I never felt there was a lot to it but that melody hit so hard, felt like a real deep dirge, a torch song for someone long gone, and I loved it. The xylophone (type) melody that followed the vocal felt rather on the nose but it was just such a good tune that it worked. It was awesome on every boot, and was one of the only songs I actually caned on its own. I kind of listened to the rest of the set but took me a long time to get a handle on most of the songs outside the three I mentioned.

Then they brought it back in '21 and they inverted the verse melody phrasing and I was despondent. They have a real habit of accentuating the less impactful harmonies, neutering the higher register stuff they perform live. Even My Girls ended up being much less soulful and emotive than the earlier versions, as great as it nevertheless turned out. This wasn't just a harmony pushed to the background, though. This was the actual melody, the strongest, most fundamental part of an otherwise fairly sparse song. I hoped it was just some experimentation for the sake of it, a live Floridada type of thing, an exploration of the song's possibilities.

No.

I will almost never pretend to enjoy anything or dupe myself because I feel it's disrespectful, not least to myself. If any kid gives me a cookie they baked and it's not good, I will say thank you but I can't eat any more because of the taste, that is a very poor effort kid.

So I was ready to say Passer-by was a stinker. Randall Peltzer pranked me good with his insta story cutting out just before the end of the first line so I didn't know if it is the old or new melody. You'll love it, he said. In hindsight, that was a real gamble. Nevertheless, the guy is right.

The inverted verse melody (BABA instead of ABAB) changes the tone a little, it changes the ebb and flow of the song emotionally. What once began as a sigh and then looked up in hope is now reversed. Not only does the melody resolve on a more downbeat phrase, the opening ascending melody sounds less hopeful than a little desperate. Some of those lines end almost in a whimper. Overall, it sounds emotionally exhausted but also erotic and brooding to me. Like when you feel really shit, hungover, heartbroken and all you want is a good cathartic fuck and to cry it all out. I don't mean to be crass but that heartbroken burning feeling of sexual release is intense. I don't know what the song is really about but that's the feeling I get from it.

I also love the little descending guitar line in the right speaker every other stanza, alternating with the dubby synth wub wub wubbb in the left speaker. It seems instrumentally much more richer, lots going on beyond the xylophone type melody which takes more of a back seat, albeit more in the line with the original vocal melody, too! It's still in there but it's suggested rather than repeated explicitly. I also love that gong/layered crash that comes in with the burning sun and a couple of times after that. Wonderful blissed out, dubby accent.

This is my highlight of the record so far.

Feel free to disagree, I am indefatigably in love with this song right now.

Great write-up. I'm glad it ended up the way it did, feels much better than the '21 live version.

However, I'm pretty pissed at how quiet Deakin's vox are in the outro. Like that was my personal favorite part, and I was at least relieved it was kept in the 2021 live version. On the record, it's more textural, but barely audible. They even kept Panda's falsetto eee-eee that ended up mixed higher. Whyyyyyyy

I only listened once, so i’m sure i’ll have a lot more to say later, but this song amazed me. It felt like thunder clouds rolling in, then parting beautifully in the outro

This is cool to read, as this is the one I'm most conflicted about, specifically the verse melody change. I think the descending melody feels really clunky. It's a different melody altogether from the old "A" part. It sticks out like a rock under my sleeping bag. The rest of the sonics and textures are fantastic. Really nailed that lonely wanderer in a wasteland vibe. Like usual though I'm sure I'll "hear" it one day in a year or two.

Yeah I think they really nailed this, I don't feel the same intense emotion from it as the 2019 version but it's waaay better than I was expecting based off the 2021 boots. Think I may like the first part of the song more than the second.

Yeah Panda's part at the end is the only bit I like. Almost every decision they made with this one is completely baffling to me. Dig everything else on the record. A shame, but you can't win 'em all. Maybe Dave knew the OG version was simply too powerful and couldn't be released

I'll save full judgment until Friday

I am holding out till i get my digital release, but does it still have those amazing autotuned ( I think) harmonies at the end? when the best part starts? or has it been toned down? kinda like the blast radio one.. where I was like oh.

Nah but seriously I agree, even though I never had the heartbreak of keeping up with the live versions. Might look into those tonight. The studio version hit me like a train though. Leaves me with a pit in my stomach, in a good way

it's interesting how the removed effect in the outro makes it a much more hard hitting moment in the album overall. it's where avey's voice feels most exposed

totally agree. it was probably my least favourite live tune and has now risen to live among the gods. such an intense mood. after cherokee's gloriously euphoric climax, this feels like such a heavy, emotional crux for the album. love the ways they filled out the arrangement here. so much colour and so much more impact.

Cool song, but I'm really missing the emotional autotune singing of the live version. That shit was sadder than watching a homeless man cry. Also, "Wouldn't miss a moment's bliss" was too good of a line, wish he kept it.

Will take a minute or two to adjust to this version, but the depth of everything on this album makes it fascinating. I feel unclear about sounds in a good way. Love this band.

oh yeah it's this, I should've followed up
i saw it (twice!) fairly recently and it's been impossible to think about anything else when I hear the song; great movie, everyone should watch

and don't get me started! on the parallels between the metaphor for control in "Car Keys" and hamaguchi's own Drive My Car (2021)
(not really joking)

that deakin oo-oo-oo-oo, is mixed so low but if you really listen you can also hear avey harmonizing with him. really cool but I wish it was easier to hear because its like the part that really grounds the second half for me. But the verses have grown on me a lot, mostly because of Avey's ghoulish vocal delivery. I feel like it has potential to be the biggest grower on the album, though Walker is quite the grower as well.

nice edit! pretty much seamless. though you kept the cheesy final line, lol

2019 passerby ending is almost too sad to exist. it literally sounds like Avey is melting into a puddle of his own tears when he sings it. I feel it in my gut every time and it's sometimes hard to listen to. I wonder if that's why they made it a more subtle affair in the studio

I have a feeling that living through the start of the pandemic made it difficult for him to still connect with whatever he was writing about in the 2019 version, hence why it changed so drastically. I really have no demoitis on this one because it's such a clear pivot - they shifted to a different bullseye and still hit it.

all that said, an official recording of a 2019 show would be a dream

Yeah, totally agree. The old live version sounds heart breaking. My guess is that Avey wanted the song to be more positive so he didn't get super sad for the ending. The new lyrics are pretty optimistic. The whole album sounds pretty positive and maybe he wanted this song to fit in better with the rest of the songs.

I thought that too, but Panda said in an interview the other day that everyone’s lyrics were finalized before the Pandemic. Maybe he was still wrong, but idk
