John Maus is a singular musical creature. The 32-year-old postgraduate political philosophy student was previously the keyboardist in Animal Collective, Panda Bear
Is this really true? Like, did he play live on some shows back in the day that i'm not unaware of?

john maus
hello everyone
i met john when i went on a tour with ariel and bevan whose signer around europe a couple of years back now. he was playing keyboards for ariel and after a little bit he played with me too. it was him and i and greg and robert r and sometimes ariel would play bass with us as well. we played a show in paris (it was ariels first because he and john had problems at the uk border) and after me and greg and slice played john asked if he could play some of his own songs and i said sure. he hooked the sound guy up with his backing tracks and fully ripped around the stage and it was awesome. that tour had some grim moments (lost and stolen equipment and a shabby van whose door wouldnt fully close and whose engine wouldnt always start in the coldest early mornings) but besides those there was never a dull moment because john and these boys were always mixing things up and having good times.
a bit after that tour john gave me some songs that were going to be for his first album (hed played some at that paris show i think) and i liked them a lot. and then just a couple months ago john sent me his newest songs and i should say ive listened to them more than any others this year. theyre very emotional for me in the best ways perhaps because i first listened to them in an intense time in an intense environment. i dont mean to sell the songs short though because i think theyre really great. there are lots of small details in the way he produced the songs too that i get really into. well i just wanted to let people know as much as i could that his new album love is real just came out yesterday or so and i think its really good and i hope you all like it too. its on the upset the rhythm label and his page is here http://www.upsettherhythm.co.uk/johnmaus.html
thanks very much for reading and take good care.
PEACE
noah

weird. I had no idea that Maus was even connected with AC really besides some write-up I vaguely remember of Maus saying how amazing Tomboy is.... Wish we had boots of these shows... didn't know Panda ever really had a backing band besides recent stuff with Sonic... hm.. And is he saying Ariel played bass with them too? Wtf, how'd I not know abt this..

Songs is one of my favorite albums. I love John's old blog posts and other misc writings -- and he is one of the more fascinating interviewees. I sometimes wonder if some of what he says doesn't actually make sense though, thinking specifically of his theses on punk rock. There are some incredible in depth interviews on YouTube that everyone should check out

Really thought this guy was onto something when he released, "Hey Moon". That is, until I found out that his best song was basically a redone version of a Molly Nilsson song lolol.

I think John Maus is a dude who deep down really just wants to make some awesome 80s synth-pop, but he's too much of an intellectual that he's always trying to justify his music to himself by relating it to medieval theories of modality and Romanticism and Viennese Classicism and the German Baroque and the High Renaissance, when really at the end of the day he just wants to rock his casio.

i gotta disagree myles, the way he structures his tracks is really far out and seems pretty intensely composed. sometimes tracks feel like it could be a full choir, very moving stuff

I was just joking guys haha. 90% of what I post is meant in jest. I found that picture and the rest of the post wrote itself. I guess humor is a lot harder to get across in text than I thought. I love John and find a lot of his interviews to be insightful. I also think his rarities and b-sides are incredible. also this:

The beginning is fine since it discussed his involvement with ac but just take any further discussion of maus to the music forum
