Did Animal Collective get their name from a Pitchfork review

The second sentence of the second paragraph refers to them as "The Animal collective...". This was in 2001. They didn't start using the name "Animal Collective" until 2003.
Is this a huge coincidence or is that how Animal Collective chose their name? Sorry if this has been noticed before, it just kind of blew my mind.

I believe they referred to themselves informally as the animal collective the whole time for tours and whatnot but for releases wanted to stick with whoever actually contributed. So they were known as the animal collective (or so and so of the animal collective) even though for danse was released as avey tare, panda bear, and geologist.

Yeah, wasn't it because they were a collective of musicians initially on the Animal record label?
I hate that Danse review so much

I actually kind of agree with that review as the lack of dynamic range mixed with all the sound effects going off at once does put a damper on the good songs, but that guy is such an awful writer and completely misses the point.
Anyway, what we need is CHz Remastered!

And how do not people get that the mixing of CHz was intentional? Midrange clusterfuck = The radio. CHz = Music made by aliens sampling radio waves.

Well then stop listening to it that way and listen to it in a context that makes it good, silly.

Compressing the ass out of the dynamic range is never good and "It's SUPPOSED to sound like shit!" is not an excuse.

Good catch. I think that despite using their individual names for their releases, they referred to themselves as a 'collective' of musicians, and 'Animal' was simply the name of their label at the time? or maybe they were using 'Paw Tracks' that early on. Can someone clear that up?

@ geraldine
It's not that it is "supposed to sound like shit", but that one of the goals of the record was to explore the higher end of the frequency range, and how that range of frequency occupies a room or individual head space.

Yeah Animal was the name of their label but it was also a term the four of them identified with aside from that, as they've said many times in interviews about why they are called Animal Collective. And to clarify what El Camino and I said above:
"Panda and Deakin both went off to college in the Boston area (Boston University and Brandeis University), while Avey and Geologist attended schools in New York City (NYU and Columbia University). Panda and Deakin assembled Panda's eponymous debut album Panda Bear during this time from the multitude of recordings Panda had made in the previous years and established their own label, Soccer Star Records, to release it.
Soccer Star morphed into the Animal label, with the intention of putting out music that came from the four musicians.
Worrying that Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin and Geologist would be too long-winded a moniker, and with record companies advising that a unifying name would be necessary for the marketplace, the group decided to adopt a catch-all name. Using their old label of Animal as inspiration they picked "Animal Collective". This formation was to be different from a straightforward band, giving the musicians the freedom to work in combinations of two to four, as dictated by the project at hand or their mood. Their first entry under this name was Here Comes the Indian, which was released in 2003 by their newly formed record label, Paw Tracks. Paw Tracks was formed with Todd Hyman from Carpark records. Animal Collective makes decisions on what Paw Tracks would release, while Hyman runs the day-to-day operations. The group was happy to find someone like Hyman, who had experience running a label and was dedicated to the group's music; the Animal label was more or less abandoned upon the formation of Paw Tracks."
