Trying to get into Spirit?

I've been going through all of the LPs and I'm loving them, but there's one thing that's always bothered me; the first track of Spirit. I'm pretty fond of the rest of the album, but the first track actually hurts my ears with the high frequency ringing so I can't really get through it.
Anyone else have this problem?

just listen to it again when you're a senior citizen and u won't be able to hear the frequencies.
ps: this is my lil secret to enjoying this song

the more you listen to it, the more you understand it.
it will grow on you, for sure. TRUST me when I say this.
I thought that for a while back too, and then it just came to me one day, I just listened to it in its entirety, and completely blew me away. Went back to read the lyrics and was even more astonished. Definitely in one of my top 5 songs by these guys ! For sure !
Toke a bowlski, kick back, relax, and let the subtle feelings sink in my friend

enjoy good sir ...

yeah, when I first started listening to it, it actually hurt my teeth for some reason
maybe just start warming up to the less harsh tracks more and just keep on exposin' yourself to that first track, at a lower volume
you will be able to handle it one day!!

Or just use an equalizer to turn the high frequencies down for now. I've always thought of the noises as a separate kind of rhythm track, maybe that perspective would help you too.

You don't get into Spirit, Spirit gets into you

thanks for the replies.
turning it down doesn't really help because the ringing is louder than any other part of the song lol. i probably won't continue to listen to it until i either get too old to hear the frequencies or change them manually. speaking of which:

how do i do this and what program would it do it with? i've looked at audacity, but i have no idea what i'm doing.
oh, and pumpkins: i think you might have misunderstood. i'm not exaggerating or w/e when i say that it actually
hurts my ears. it's not really about me thinking it's a bad song (i assume it's good, though i physically have not been able to listen to it long enough to be able to tell) as much as it's the frequencies for the ringing being too physically painful to listen to.

i'm not going to carry around hot cocoa everywhere, so i hope you aren't serious
the dead ears thing later on in life is an option i was considering anyway, but i'd rather have some advice on how to just get rid of the ringing using the equalizer or w/e.

Do you have iTunes? Or virtually any media player? Open the equalizer on there (it's usually under the "view" tab) and then drag down the highest frequencies on it.
I just tried it by just dropping everything 16khz and over and it sounded great.

is there a way to edit the track itself so it always sounds that way without needing the equalizer? the ipod touch is bad and doesn't let you adjust it like that (and it's what i have to work with)

not that i don't appreciate the suggestion, but be serious. i can't and won't make hot cocoa every time i want to listen to the song, and even if i did, it would restrict where i would be able to listen to it when virtually no other song on my library makes me do something like that.

haha you guys are crackin me up man !
But yeah Humor I totally misunderstood your comment. So the high frequencies are actually uncomfortable to listen to. Man I'm really sorry to hear that. It must be quite unfortunate, it's probably something you might wanna check out. Not that I'm saying that it's serious, but maybe it is something to look into is all. Maybe you just have lil fragile ears and that's cool.

Oh, OK. Yeah, Audacity is probably your friend. Try the "Effect" tab, then "Equalization" then drink a cup of hot cocoa, then click on the graph to make dots for a curve that'll lower high frequencies (the ones on the far right of the graph).

if you cut out the high frequencies on Audacity like wilbur said, you can export the song so you have a copy that doesn't have those frequencies. Then you can always listen to the edited version

Just ignore them. I always used to hear people say 'I don't listen to the lyrics' and I just realised I could apply this principle to any aspect of music to get maximum enjoyment (or rather, least displeasure) from any song. Don't like that one-note bassline? Problem solved.
There are some rare songs I listen to virtually 100% such as Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry be Happy and then some songs I only listen to roughly 35%, like Hot and Cold by Katy Perry. I find most Animal Collective songs vacillate between 82% and 92% depending on how good the song is written/my mood/access to hot cocoa. The song My Humps by the Black Eyed Peas was my very first 0% song so I can theoretically listen to it again and again on a loop until they dump me in my fat grave. I can only hope none of the song sneaks through subliminally because it would probley put me there quicker lol
