Interesting how there's no way (so far as I can tell) to comment on that review, but you can on his other reviews...

I think this has been said in one way or another, but it's kind of refreshing to get these vitriolic reviews. I think it would be much safer for them to make an album very similar to an older one, but clearly the change has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. It's exciting-- I'm not sure it's like Dylan playing electric guitar at Newport, but it's better than no change.

So are Floridada and LiTG the only songs Stetson appears on? I don't recall hearing sax any of the other tracks

is this a fans record?!

funny how the lead-up was all about this being 'the accessible pop album by AC' and now it seems to be, "the album only the fans like"

haven't looked for AC reviews, just seen a few bad ones you guys have posted... so maybe it's an even mix, but this is almost a danse manatee pt. 2 in terms of critics apathy

seriously... are critics so dull and dense that they can't even try to have fun with this?

CUZ THIS RECORD IS SO FUN

what you guys forget is that hating never goes out of style

i for one will be happily hocketing with the boys like a lunatic outta my car and room this summer

as an aside does anyone else do both parts of the hocketing lines in certain tracks? particularly on Spilling Guts (or Boys Latin), both avey and panda's lines can be sung by one person changing the pitch/note halfway through each syllable/word. if they are so willing. It's also really fun for the vocal chords imho ^.^

edit: so glad other people have a special place for avey's 'dudes', especially the WWIWS line :D

i was singing/playing the album in my head this morning

after 'floridada' ended i couldn't remember how 'hocus pocus' started (after the dinosaurs sample of course) and i ended up playing 'spilling guts' in my head.

the tracklist is great as is, but in that moment i thought, 'oh man spilling guts would've been great after floridada. ... to go from the jam to 'spillinggutsspilling guts'

AND THEN THOSE POWERFUL SYNTH CHORDS

Like, listening to feels for the first time after hearing painting with just throws it into comparison. it's jarring. I love AC, and I definitely haven't lost faith in them, I'll always enjoy their output. It just honestly feels like something's missing.

Sorry for the negative reaction bros

I did exactly the same thing, also feels. and yes,
there is something missing, like I said right after the freebird. it doesn't contain the same magic feels as anything they did pre-Oddsac. BUT, for me at least, there's much more playfulness and inventivity here than there was on CHZ, so I'm really happy with that, and if you just take this album for what it is it's pure joy that is repeatedly growing each listen. actually I enjoy it alot more than I thought I would, so that's really nice.

It's obviously not uncommon for a band to put out really emotionally charged, intense music when they're in their 20's and 30's, only to settle in to a more mellow sort of groove as they get older. I think any perceived lack of "intensity" or "feels" in AC's new music is mostly just a result of that natural progression...Animal Collective aren't young men going through the growing pains of break ups and huge life changes any more, or they've at least been around those blocks a few times, which means their music is going to settle in to more of a calculated, less emotionally visceral sort of place as a result.

As someone who's getting in to their mid 30's this is something that I've spent a lot of time reflecting on, and honestly I don't think it's a bad thing. Sure, you don't feel quite as much as you did before, but you also gain perspective, and it's at that point that you're able to tackle some of the really big questions. It also forces you to start approaching your art in ways that you never considered before, which can result in really rewarding stuff getting made. The danger of course is becoming some kind of "professional musician" who just cranks out the same old, workmanlike, middle of the road albums over and over again while your fan base circle jerks you in to artistic irrelevancy, but...I really don't see that happening in this case.

i thought CHz was incredibly emotional on one end of the spectrum (depression) and this album is a like an emotional opposite. This still hits me in the feels, just all the happy ones instead of sad ones.
that vocal part after piano section in OnDelay does sound super poignant to me though

edit: just saw ur new comment, basically we agree i think :)

feels is prbly one of my least favorite lps of theirs and im not just a contrarian.. more abt sj/mpp and pretty much everything else except a good chunk of feels. just into the slower songs mostly. thats not totally relevant, but this falls in line with a lot of sj/mpp in some ways, and i really dig this. kind of hope gnip gnop or hounds is a slower song/ballad/ambient jam just to see what thatd sound like during this era besides just michael remember

the lyrics in this thing are so sincere and personal it's beautiful. listening and reading along the first time added a whole new dimension to the album and was a pretty powerful experience. the boys have so much heart!
i didn't really have this experience, but if this doesn't really "feel" like an ac record to u for any reason, listening while reading the lyrics could change that. lyrics are so classic ac i don't know how to describe it really it's jus got that feeling

also don't count on Joe Biden liking this record that much he'll give it a 6 probably. thats all he ever gives anything

Also - I was just reading The Quietus' review and I almost didn't make it past the second paragraph.

"...unique highs would emerge like fleeting firebirds from the strange tundra laid out by their loops and lo-fi acoustics..."

I give fewer than 0 shits about his opinion of the record, but why do reviewers of all types feel the need to write such insanely flowery analogies that serve almost no purpose in the description of anything relating to the thing they're reviewing? What is this trend?!

It's leftover purple prose from the Great American Novel they abandoned during grad school.
