if anyone's curious, the review has 31 sentences, and just 10 of them are addressing the music. that's less than a third. pretty offensive to these guys who obviously put a lot of work into this thing
it's almost like sometimes music isn't just a series of randomly generated sounds that exist in a vacuum.
it's almost like a review of a collection of songs should at least spend the majority of its time talking about the songs
not if the more important of aspect of the album isn't just the songs but where it places the band in the context of their output and the larger scheme of what's happening in music.
it is my firm view that the most important aspect of an album is the album itself. you may disagree, but i think the songs matter most
the songs are part of a larger whole though. why make an album at all then? why write about certain things? in 2016 you can't just get on your laptop and type out "i don't like the use of major chords" or "the beats are good". everyone complained when they used a dumb burrito metaphor anyways. you can't write about this album without acknowledging the ones that came before it to talk about why it's disappointing, you can't write about Tusk without talking about Rumors, or Sign O' The Times without Purple Rain.

It really sucks that because of this p4k review, we can't even discuss what we as a community think about this album. Instead we are discussing the validity of opinions of rushed reviewers trying to meet a deadline/working for larger publications that are always going to be pushing specific ideas/trends/etc.
Not that there haven't been well though out posts that express why they like or dislike the album, just saying there should be more of that.
I understand that what is happening around the music as it is released is interesting, and relevant to the general idea of discussing the album, but if anything, that stuff is more interesting to discuss when looking back on the album as opposed to when it first comes out and we are all still digesting it.
Aw come on, music discussion is a weird messy thing and if you dont try and articulate differing opinions it's just high fives and ass pats. it's always up for debate and discussion, and pitchfork being who they are incites that debate.

this all feels pretty samey and back heavy

still giving it dedicated repeat listens though, some songs grow
i think other artists wouldn't receive the same kind of scrutiny, we're all just hoping for something new and insane from people who had previously delivered that
makes me afraid of what sort of magic someone needs to keep greatness going and going.. this and centipede both feel like trying to recapture something when the new ideas run out whereas at the height of MPP i felt like they were capable of making anything and it would be incredible

Thank you
I like this album, I really do. I like it more with each listen. But it's hitting me as a disappointment for all the reasons I've already articulated in this thread. Check it out, we all have different opinions. It's not like I love the guys less, and I'm still excited for what the future holds

I don't want it to be all high fives and ass pats. In my post I said I want to hear more well though out opinions on why they dislike it. I have no problem with that. The problem is we have a ridiculous amount of pages discussing whether or not a p4k review matters, instead of just discussing the album in terms of this communities opinion.

Petition to stop talking about Pitchfork in this thread
if everyone's down, someone should make a separate thread for discussing the goddamn pitchfork review. Otherwise, we should discuss the album, removed from the reviews of others

fair enough, but would you say a pitchfork review is entirely irrelevant? like even if you think it's dumb it does matter to some degree.

that review also thinks Lennon sang Oh! Darling, so is the point that poorly written reviews are out there?

I for one am all for a live rendition of Natural Selection that somehow transitions into a new revamped electronic Hey Light

I just want to say, as someone who started listening to animal collective when hcti came out (I was in 8th grade and my friend's older brother listened to a lot of music that was weird and cool to us at the time... Tom waits, Nina Simone, weird jazz, ac, etc) I've seen a lot with this band. Wasn't too into them until feels came out and rediscovered sung tongs, the sj freebird, the MPP hype, went back and fell in love with Spirit which is still probably my favorite... Anyway, I wasn't super into CHz even though I do enjoy it, and I liked Panda Bears new stuff live but I wasn't a fan of boys Latin at all... All of that said, I love Painting With. There's a great energy about the album, it's fun, it's weird, it's poppy, and I enjoy it a lot. I don't find the hocketing distracting and the song writing is pretty good, I've played music for a long time so I generally know where songs are headed, after the first three tracks I was a bit disappointed but there are so many little surprises even in the standard structure songs, and then tracks like burglars and on delay that tend to move forward and go to unexpected places are great. And hell, despite being as repetitive as it is, natural selection is one of my favorite tracks because its a well written, fun, enjoyable pop song.
My favorites are probably the burglars, on delay, recycling, golden gals, natural selection, and bagels. Hocus pocus has a great thumping drive to the song, although I don't care for the chorus, spilling guts has that same energy, and vertical has one of the best verses (I'm warming up to the parking lot chorus). Floridada a has grown on me and lying in the grass works great in the context of the album. I think this one has possibly their best tracklisting and as a long time fan I love it.

this album seems weird/new for them in a lot of ways, but its such an organic development of post-chz stuff given pbvsgr and slasher... kinda cool how naturally the style progresses from chz. its kinda like condensed deakin-less chz songs with all the weird centipede-y structures some of the time, just condensed and tighter... a healthy influence from slasher/greaper, esp melodic/vocal stuff and songwriting imo. the overall sounds and textures make me think of a more refined chz sound, with bits of st-mpp thrown in

yeah and ~*KANYE WEST!!*~.
Kanye, Japandroids and Drake are super rad - what's the deal with the weird anti rap snobbery in this here thread - hard to imagine few as influential as Drake in '10-'15.

just make a "pitchfork discussion thread" for those who want to discuss it
has anyone else mentioned that on delay sounds really similar to such great heights from the postal service? the intro keyboard noise and the bass texture are both really similar. i think whoever wrote it (panda?) had to be inspired by that song

avey wrote it i think has been established. i guess we dont kno for sure but seems like an avey song to me. side 2 starts with 2 avey, then 2 panda, then avey, panda..
and ya when i heard the amazon samples such great heights is the first think i thought of for on delay, which was worrisome honestly, not into postal service vibes in ac, but with the real thing and some time it seems like a very different kind of feeling... way into that song.

So lets talk about translating the sound to the live setting. Hopefully they keep the classic transitional improvisations between songs? What songs will be reworked? I'm hoping for something like Bat You'll Fly, imagine how dope that'd sound with the PW vibe.
I'm expecting the unexpected. Something like Unsolved Mysteries, or Water Curses

This record benefits so much from being viewed in the context of AC's uncompromising trajectory.
I always saw cHz as an active repudiation of MPP's heightened spirituality ... a sick impish experiment in which the band reveled on the debauched floorboards of the material plane... all sweat, heat, crammed bodies, hoarse voices, unshaved faces, dirty fucking, etc.
You'd think, after the somewhat flaccid response, they'd flee to some more secure comfort zone. But in typical bugfuck unyeiding fashion, the band decides to double-down on the man-made materialistic sound palette of cHz... in the hope of LOCATING spirituality there. And they find it in the sheer exuberance of the human voice. These guys love to sing. It's what they were born to do. It's their ticket to spiritual apotheosis and its whats been reclaimed here. I fucking love it.
Haha. Sorry. I'm way down the rabbit hole here.
