Chz is my least favourite album and I've slaughtered it at times on here but I couldn't agree with you less. Nevertheless, welcome to the board and good to debate this stuff.

Animal Collective is Dave's band, full stop.

To say (in your following post) that Chz is ambitious, progressive and aggressively textural is just plain wrong, as is the assertion that Death Grips were exploring the same space. I genuinely laughed out loud at the comparison. Also, this description contradicts your wish that they demonstrate innovation (!), and do this by producing a follow-up to MPP (!!). I don't know what you're asking for and I disagree with your descriptions, except the request for innovation.

It's arguably the least ambitious and progressive Animal Collective album, featuring a checklist of sounds, vocal processing and production used elsewhere. If you want aggressive textures, take your pick of anything pre-Sung Tongs, basically.

I was talking about the instrumental aspect of Centipede HZ which is a progression of their previous textural style found on Strawberry Jam and earlier. I was listening to the album while writing it, and was trying to be objective as I could. It very much is like a prototype of a style that would be expanded by Avey and Panda on later solo albums and I think it shares a sonic palette similar to what Deathgrips was experimenting in 2012 also it kind of comes full circle back to the Black Dice influence at the band's start. I don't think it's a laughable comparison at all, there is literally a handful of bands that have scratched that level of textural experimentation.

My whole point was that even with this stylistic progression... the band subverts our expectation by not delivering an album that meets the standard of MPP or any of its other work prior. To me it feels like a strange sketch meticulously rendered. An album that lies in an alternate world, something very weird and perfected.... but not in a necessary masterful way.

I don't know. I think the album has it's merits, and is good. But can AnCo deliver another game-changer?

Regardless of whether or not u think Centipede Hz sounds like Death Grips, I doubt the album was influenced by them much at all. Ex Military didn't come out until after the dudes already started writing the C Hz jams and they listen to so much shit, I just get the feeling that there's tons of disparate stuff that influenced the songs

there's also this big list of influences from around the time C Hz came out, plenty of other stuff on there that I'm sure influenced the album http://www.spin.com/2012/08/the-animal- ... entipedia/

you're entitled to your opinion, but I think this is just a totally wrong way of looking at things. there is no "standard" for animal collective albums. they really don't deserve to get compared, they're all so different. you just have to enjoy each one for what it is. And obviously there's nothing wrong with disliking Centipede Hz but I think it's silly to think that it's a bad album just bc you don't like it, or that it's not up to some imaginary "standard"

I said both bands were experimenting with a similar approach... specifically in how they mix a textural palette. Listening to the demos for Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper kind of confirms that stylistic progression is evidently there. It was only to highlight an aspect of why I thought CHZ was a natural shift forward in terms of instrumentals.

I'm not even debating with you, i'm just expressing my thoughts on the direction the music has been taking. I even said that CHZ was meticulous and a good album. But it subverts the expectation that fans had. It songwriting/style is a huge step not necessarily forward or back but in my opinion "sideways". It's a perfected idea of a musical space that is at it's core very different from any other AnCo albums...It's a miss-step... in which I hope they can return to form.

You're cherrypicking words that I said and taking them out of context.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that you were trying to have a debate w me, cause you're clearly not. I just said that because ever since C Hz came out people have been debating whether or not it's a worthwhile album. It just bugs me that people still treat C Hz as the redheaded stepchild of the AC discog, I think it's as worthy of praise of any of their other albums. I just think not as many people can get into it maybe, but that doesn't mean it's bad. plenty of people love it and get super into it

see, it's animal collective... saying "I hope they can return to form" seems pointless considering really anything they've done is their form. It's entirely possible to appreciate CHz like any of their other albums. It's still AC being AC. Calling any part of their career a misstep seems... weird to me. (see: constant debates about whether or not danse manatee is objectively good)

Anyway, this is a thread about the next album, not the last one

I kind of derailed the topic... sorry gentlemen. Just was trying to articulate my reasoning for why the last AnCo album sounds ''different'' to me from the rest of their discography. Which is why I posed the question if anyone else may express the same concerns I had voiced about the new album.

I didn't know this was such a polarizing topic

Don't apologize for anything! You were just trying to make sense of a very strange album and put it in context of where the band is going/where you want it to go and got pointlessly attacked by some really argumentative and sensitive members of the board

Avey's been posting a lot of nature/exploration photos on his instagram, Panda's been busy playing festivals, Deak's doing heroin and DMT in Detroit and Geo is probably sitting at home mastering the whole thing.
I think last we heard, they said the album was done being recorded, so I think we'll hear something at the end of summer...

artwork is a very good indication of where this album will go, so far through avey's instagram a lot of reflection pictures have been posted and nature. I can imagine what sonic worlds they have spun, hopefully a lot of analog synths are being used.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised at all if the album bore themes on identity, self-reflection, and moving away from new technology/social media. I see Avey as a bit of a Luddite. He deleted his original Instagram because he found himself using it too much.

It's not very strange.

Replying to an opinion is not an attack.

Father Time, New Town Burnout, Mercury Man
Why am I even listing things

would be cool to have an album of stuff like that, tho in a way that is sort of what they do when they bring back old jams and play em with new setups live. still, thats not quite studio..

think of all the sweet reworks we've had though, my favs are Taste from p4k 2011, merriwether era slippi, chz era we tigers, bbc(merriwether era?) winters love, merriwether era chocolate girl, and so on. It would be cool if they did live in studio recordings of reworked older songs and then added overdubs where they saw fit and released em for fun.
