Hearing Tropic of Cancer in full quality without that little blip is so weird. Shouldn't have played the shitty freebird so much. This is beautiful!

Never realized Crosswords sampled this (per the liner notes):
Sample starts at 0:18
Such a cool drum break

the same reason anybody cares what critics have to say about their favorite artists - the more people that listen to it with a positive or open mindset, the more people who like it, and the more people buy the album and panda gets the praise and accolades he deserves.
when i first started listening to animal collective (back before MPP was released) i didn't like it at all. it just didn't click. but i kept listening because critics from all over the spectrum kept heaping praise on them, which let me know there was something to it i was missing. lo and behold i was right and they've been my favorite band since. i had to make a LOT of adjustments to the way i perceived and saw music (and some of this came from experimenting with psychedelics) but it eventually happened.
if everyone said they sucked i most likely wouldn't have kept listening beyond my first listen. sorry i just don't have the time to give every single artist the time they deserve. if an album is widely acclaimed it gives me more of an incentive to keep going. if it doesn't click it doesn't click, obviously, but if a lot of people like an album there's probably a reason for that.
so if Joe Biden pans it that's just an entire subsection of people who probably won't give this album, or panda bear (if this is their first introduction to him) a chance, and that's sad. i want everyone to listen to panda bear, and thus i want the critics to praise it!

stereogum's "premature evaluation". didn't get "album of the week"...

I think you make a lot of good points. I definitely think that ultimately, it's up to the listener themselves to decide what they do or don't like. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the initial decision to listen to something has to be made completely independently of anyone else's opinion. I mean, how many people out there probably only listened to AC or Panda Bear because of widespread critical acclaim? Probably a whole lot of people, if you ask me. There will always be people who seek to attach themselves to a trend purely out of a desire to seem cool or in-the-loop, but there are also a lot of people who use critics and reviews to find new music. It's these people's jobs to find and evaluate new music, so if you find a critic whose musical preferences are similar to yours, why wouldn't you pay attention to what they say? It saves you time and energy.
Critical appraisal is absolutely not a determinant in the value or worth of a piece music—like I said, I think that's up to the listener. But the right critic at the right time just might convince a skeptic to listen to something that they otherwise wouldn't have, which I think is a great thing. We could always use more open-minded music listeners.
Okay, sorry to go off-topic. Still haven't listened to this album in HQ, waiting til I get home from work

Also great post Victor. Specific music critics have been really important towards me finding some of my favourite music, you can find ones that align with a lot of music you're into and you can get into heaps of stuff from there.
Still think Pitchfork is generally rubbish though and you shouldn't hold much stock in album reviews by themselves.
I should really listen to this album again.

i kinda like most of that stereogum review, ignoring the first line but w/e let reviewers have fun. i rly liked the comparisons with pta and i liked how they spoke about panda bear's work as being 'cerebral' (even negatively) which i don't think gets enough credit bc the focus is usually on 'brian wilson' and 'psych pop'. and i think it's a little unfair to say he is repeating himself or that the album is panda bear doing panda bear and falling into panda bear cliches, bc i rly think there seems to be an acknowledgement and avoidance of those cliches. and i think any instance of 'panda bear doing panda bear' is v intentional (mr noah) and v in keeping with the themes of the record.
