he's going to take a break, see the wife and kids, take a few walk, he deserves it. Our boy has been touring since 2013 !

Still thought his fest set was great though. Only qualm was that Come to your Senses shouldve been replaced with Mr. Noah or YCCOM to pump up the crowd more

On a side note, I would love if the new jams had some ambient Aphex Twin vibes to them. Very danceable and very melodic

Ah, my bad. I would have loved to see him the night before. I went to Pitchfork just for PB and I guess I was just slightly disappointed because nobody seemed as pumped as I was and my whole group was worried about my car being stolen (as it turns out, I parked the car, paid the attendant, and left my keys in the ignition with the car running; thankfully the attendant noticed and turned it off/locked the car).

Well I saw him at the Pitch festival in paris in 2013 and it was the same nobody was really into it.. But the songs were new so maybe there 's that

Panda just doesn't do it for the festival crowd. It was the same back when he was playing Tomboy stuff at Pitchfork in 2010. Watching the stream of this last p4k set I thought Panda was killing it vocally and the set was full of bangers.

it's been 2 years, 10 months, and 17 days since CHz, dang. feels like it's been longer than that though. maybe cuz of slasher flicks/pbvsgr.

I wonder if the gap since C Hz was part of the impetus for recording the album so soon after pbvsgr came out

like if they only started recording after Panda was completely done touring then we'd be talking about probably a >4 year gap between album releases, but it's probably gonna end up closer to 3 years

yeah even for that reason I'm really glad they recorded so soon after writing

if you count ODDSAC as an album, this has been the longest gap between AC records

eh i'd much rather have a specific release date to be hyped about. especially if it didn't freebird, although it seems like domino has been having progressively worse luck with those.
the hype cycle for chz was ideal tbh. announcement + new website + weekly broadcasts w sick guests + single + music video + everyone hearing the album stream at the same time. gr8 stuff

I really can't see them doing a surprise release anyway tbh

yeah I don't think it's likely either. and I do also love their album rollouts

Long time AnCo fan and lurker of the forums. First post....

Anyone else hoping that Avey Tare is less prominent on the next album? I think Panda Bear has retained a better sense of how to write music that has a more lasting quality.... if that makes sense. CHZ to me feels like they gave Avey full reign, and it felt very similiar in sound to what turned out to be Slasher Flicks and prior to that Down There. I think CHZ suffered from this personally... and I was relieved Panda Bear's latest album didn't struggle with the same flaws...

I'm really hoping for a proper followup to MPP.... I think this is an important time for the band, they essentially have to show us that they are capable of innovating and creating good music even after a miss step. Like look at David Bowie or Kevin Barnes discography and you'll see they have had several peaks. I'm hoping AnCo can still give us something like Feels, MPP, Strawberry Jam, Fall Be Kind... I hope they can give us something equal to that level of musical perfection....

Anyone else concerned?

In general I agree but avey on "new psycho actives vol. 1" was straight fire though...
But yeah, before CHZ I remember wanting something raw and powerful and avey from AC a la Strawberry Jam...this time around im hoping for something dubby, spacious, maybe a bit hip hop influenced...and as far as im concerned...panda would be the better "driving force" for the sound that im hoping for.
love avey though!

Not supremely worried. AC has always sort of been Avey's baby since the beginning, and I think he's had a heavy role in every album ever since, both sonically and song writing-wise. I also would be surprised if the rest of the group wasn't taking notes on his style when they were all teens since he was writing hits like Penny since he was 16, so I see a lot of reflection in the way the others have written music.

I in fact feel very different about the songwriting though. Panda's got really good ideas most of the time, like Person Pitch is still such an amazing concept in both composition and execution, but lately his song structures have stagnated into the form intro sound + section A (verse) -> section B (chorus, maybe a coda), and back around till outro sound. Or at least, that's how it felt the entire way through PBvstGR.

I'm hoping for more Geo quite honestly. I think Geo really colored CHZ well, painting with very broad brushes of sound, and outside of ODDSAC, I think it showcased what Geo does well, and that's set a dense, complex atmosphere.

To be honnest the band does not have to show us anything, they do music for them self you know.

Why is Centiped a miss step ?

edit : that came out pretty agressive, not meant to be at all

I know they don't owe their listeners anything... I'm just voicing my personal opinion, specifically because I'm a fan.

I think CHZ is a miss step in the sense that it subverts the listener's expectation...? It's very ambitious with it's dense instrumentals. It's a progression in style that was incorporating a more aggressively textural sonic pallette... bands like Death Grips were also exploring this same space at the time. When I listen to the album this is what appeals to me a lot... However the songwriting doesn't retain a lot of weight with me after I listen, It doesn't have the timeless quality that keeps me returning to something like Tomboy or Feels or every previous AnCo release. I try to use the term timeless in an objective way, something that has a lot of replay-ability and catchy-ness. I can't put my thumb on it

I'm more reserved about the new album. Keeping my hopes high but expectations neutral. I think Avey's style since 2011 has really shifted towards something pretty different from the rest of the band's discography. Which kind of brings me back to why I'm hoping for the songwriting balance to be changed up for this new album.... I don't know man, I'm excited as hell for new stuff

I think Down There is better than C Hz and also anything Panda's ever done. Slasher Flicks was a huge letdown for me though.

I don't think Centipede subverted my expectations at all, I agree with Scooter.

Chz is my least favourite album and I've slaughtered it at times on here but I couldn't agree with you less. Nevertheless, welcome to the board and good to debate this stuff.

Animal Collective is Dave's band, full stop.

To say (in your following post) that Chz is ambitious, progressive and aggressively textural is just plain wrong, as is the assertion that Death Grips were exploring the same space. I genuinely laughed out loud at the comparison. Also, this description contradicts your wish that they demonstrate innovation (!), and do this by producing a follow-up to MPP (!!). I don't know what you're asking for and I disagree with your descriptions, except the request for innovation.

It's arguably the least ambitious and progressive Animal Collective album, featuring a checklist of sounds, vocal processing and production used elsewhere. If you want aggressive textures, take your pick of anything pre-Sung Tongs, basically.

tbh, I hope it's similar to psycho actives. long, slow-burning sample-based songs, like a murkier person pitch.... i like the sound of that. but yeah, I have no doubts. it's animal collective. i mean come on
