My rankings so far (after at least 3 listens of each song); it'll definitely change due to the raise in quality but Hocus Pocus will probably stay my favorite.
Spoiler: show
1. Hocus Pocus (that chorus is just ridiculously good. also SO MANY WAAAAAAAAYS)
2. Vertical (love the vocoded voice in the beginning)
3. Bagels In Kiev (the opening ambient sounds are great)
4. Summing The Wretch (the percussion is just so fucking punchy)
5. The Burglars (those ending harmonies tho)
6. Natural Selection
7. On Delay (much MUCH better than I anticipated)
8. Lying In The Grass
9. Recycling (funky)
10. Spilling Guts (the length is really its only downside)
11. FloriDada (yeah I knew this would rank low)
12. Golden Gal (fight me, it's still great though it seemed kind of safe and plain melody-wise)

I can't believe after all that this freebirded in poor quality 128. I hope the CD rip is up soon! Glad you all seem to be enjoying it though!

wow on delay is beautiful. the piano that comes in half way is gorgeous. so remixable. and pandas harmonies damn. sounds like they almost quote also frightened in one line. eager abt the lyrics

and does spilling guts sample ttg? sounds like it has a loop from that after the first verse

This is a spectacular display of sonic architecture.

Really reminds me again why I love these guys so much. No one else is doing anything quite like this...The name Painting With immediately makes so much sense.

I love lying in the grass as much as most of the meat on MPP and it seems like it's one of the less liked songs.. Very very excited.

Hey also random question but how much acoustic instrument sampling is there on this record? Roughly what's the ratio of synth to acoustic instruments? Bonus question, is there any acoustic guitar at all anywhere on the record?

ya litg seems like itd be towards the bottom of my list, i think i mostly prefer aveys tracks at this point tho in general.

theres a decent amount of piano on on delay. not too sure about all the acoustic stuff so far tho, mostly electronic. no idea if theres acoustic guitar yet, could be. could be used as a percussion instrument. drums seem like a blend of things
natural selection makes me think of zooming around on a hover bike/speed bike. lots of this seems rlly motorik/techno. like rlly weird techno.

also rumblings of a higher/full quality rip...

There's definitely guitar in the album but if there is any acoustic guitar, the limited dynamic range of this freebird is definitely masking it. I've got a real good feel for the album now but, at this point, I'm so much more excited to just dig into it. It's not nearly as digital as MPP is (as far as I can tell) but they are definitely taking natural sounds and adding a lot of filter effects. And if it isn't through filters, it's just a strange sound on its own (keep in mind their quote regarding banging on the side of a plastic kiddie pool - not exactly a sound that anyone would be like "Ah, yep, that's a kiddie pool."). I've always loved how I'm always able to find new things in AnCo/solo albums years down the road but I know for sure I'll be picking apart this album for wayyyy longer.

I really like a lot of this and I'm looking forward to digging a bit deeper with a proper quality version BUT:

If there were one gimmick I would not expect to sustain an entire album, it would be hocketing. I can't listen to Boys Latin any more, and frankly, I found it quite irritating from the very first boots. Thank God they do a little more with it on this record but it's still a pretty gimmicky technique to apply so liberally. It basically works well when there's a great set of chords to move around and when they sync and separate and do some interesting rhythmic stuff (Spilling Guts & Hocus Pocus) but it's a bit of a headache otherwise. I think Summing The Wretch is what Animal Collective sounds like to people who don't like Animal Collective. I remember an ex girlfriend (not native English speaker) telling me that AC made her feel 'itchy' which I found hilarious but now I understand.

they really need a remix ep like pbvsgr had. i wanna see a pc music, container or like four tet remix for a few of these. natural selection, bagels and on delay especially. litg too. that would be amazing..

re pands hocketing all over this, i dig it but it does seem a bit odd how prominently he uses it in all his songs, so that half that album pretty much has that BUT i kind of dig how that kind of helps give the album a really homogeneous energy and i mean he is using it to kind of different effect every time, even if it the same like general vibe in a way

Melodically and harmonically, this sounds very rich and colourful and complex. I didn't think there would be so much going on. It sounds really invigorated.

Agreed.... For all the way talk of 'primitive' or raw energy, all tracks have a natural logic & flow.... For a techno album it's organic

The caveman vibe to me shows itself more through a return to fun & childlike energy, each song is like a theme to some wacky children's TV show

^definitely feel that.

so in love with golden gal. 2nd half of it is especially incredible. so beautiful... almost has a similar vibe to me as selfish gene except with drums... just in terms of like the feeling behind it maybe
