hey pete! did noah give you many visual cues for the album? any environments or specific movies/tv shows etc when recording?

yeah ........ Lisbon .
Principe reale & Barrio alto .....
...the old city is an endless maze of differant vibes
...corners . doorways , look-outs & zons ...
.....the older parts are liberally splashed with beautiful geometric tiles......often in mint green & ruby port wine red....but all the primaries get a look in too ....
...good for reflecting both light and sound .....

maybe i said this before...it's one of only a few cities where i notice a discernable ambiance & acoustic .....
...I hear distant sounds & music everywhere , which seem to somehow be linked very much - or even 'embody' Noah's music .....in essence .....
I'd say it's a city with Soul , like few others ...
..I notice the french love Lisboa , and that speaks volumes in itself .....
a beautiful experience , i'm still savouring .....
don't faguette ! Petek petek !

PS . talkin of Lisbon . that 'language' above is Nadsat .
I think its russian & hungarian or slav gypsy based .
Anthony Burgess had family that ways i believe .

Man I'm so way behind on this stuff! I haven't listened to any boots, and I only just now got around to listening to the EP. I'm kind of glad I saved it for now though, because I've been feeling way down and this stuff is bringing me way up,,,beautiful sounds. I'm partial to Faces in the Crowd, Lonely Wanderer, and Tropic of Cancer (<this one especially). I don't know how to talk about music but MMMMMM thanks!

Lisbon sounds incredible. I've never lived in a city, and I've always wanted to. I want to be somewhere that feels alive, changing, and vibrant... something like lisbon... thats the dream

In my copy of Clockwork Orange the editors include a 'dictionary' of sorts. And yes, most of it is slavic based, which is very interesting when it's combined with English. They're entirely different families of language. No relation at all. Two unlike species, bred together, to form Nadsat. So when you take Nadsat and mix in a little cockney English, rhyme slang, and other native vernacular language tendencies, you get the beautiful, unique language in the equally beautiful (if not dark beauty) and unique world that Anthony created. Last exit to brooklyn in a similar vein of writing, though more for structural/semantic reasons.

Have you read Last Exit sonic?

hate posting this kinda stuff, but this album (well on its own it's still a masterpiece and spiritual journey at times) when you're a little messed it's goddamn next level. like out alone at sea spiritual. Not trying to downplay the album when sober at all, it's really incredible. But this is a great one for other states.

Heya Nat !
Hmm.....
Atlantis , for sure ...!
Xanadu , absolutely ....
Jericho , .....used to . Ha

....but no ..... Not so strong ....no .
' SF has a definate splash to it ....I like trams with cables a lot .....and the ocean & ports...
Amsterdam - same deal ......train Trax n trams n water
Manhattan - again the rumble of the subway seems to permeate
thru out .....and beds the rest of the palette ... The avenues have an ambience of their own ...
Mexico City too ........
but not many playces & in the same sense as Lisboa...
It's possibly subliminally part synaesthesic..... and with the strong and shifting light
....& the strong flux in the daily temperature ,....
...everything just a little 'removed' by an hill , a bend , a wall , a tree ....
Sweet vibes ....

Hey Sonic!

Where did a lot of of the synth tones come from on the album? Can you let us know a bit about the gear he used? Also, I'm curious how big of a roll the Teenage Engineering OP-1 played on the recording, and what sounds he generated with that. I saw him playing one live, and they look really cool. Was curious how big of a roll it played.

General gear question I guess! Apologize if its already been asked!

I've definitely thought this too. Like the "Reaper" is represented by all of the harsh electronic voices in the background in some of the songs, like at the end of Sequential Circuits, beginning of Mr Noah, and at the end of Come To Your Senses especially.

I would love to know this as well. He posted a few pages back about some stuff they used but it was mostly fx pedals if I remember right. Also sonic any news on that live show you were talking about releasing? I'd give anything for a soundboard of these songs live. Would be amazing.

Doesn't mean we want get more solo music from Mr Noah, but Meets the Grim Reaper would be a perfect ending. You could view his "big 3" as a sort of trilogy:

Person Pitch = A New Hope.
Tomboy = Empire Strikes Back.
Meets the Grim Reaper = Return of the Jedi.

so 19 songs were recorded. we've gotten 16 so far, including Davy Jones' Locker and Shadow of the Colossus, which means there are between 3 and 5 songs still in store!

I love his description of the "story" running through the album:

Code: Select all

RS: Is there a larger story being told on Grim Reaper?

PB: Not something that I had envisioned from the beginning, but once I had all the songs the sequence that I put together feels like a story to me. The first section feels like an identity dissolving, hectic and busy and more intense, more abrasive. It's the death throes of the identity and as the album progresses, it gets more broken apart and damaged until it hits this place where the previous identity completely disappears. It matches the times in my life where I felt like I had gone through an intense change of character when I felt like I was growing the most. The last songs on the album, "Selfish Gene" and "Acid Washed," are like sea shanties to me. There's a weird undercurrent of sailor stuff going through the album, which I suppose is a Portuguese influence subconsciously.

We've got 14 tracks. We still need Jabberwocky, Cosplay, Poppadum, OG Faces in the Crowd, and the new Preakness
