2011-07-15_Pitchfork Music Festival, Chicago, IL (2021 Remaster)

https://www.mediafire.com/file/hxxnad37 ... ).zip/file

I think I had a different version than the one that was posted here, maybe a direct capture of the original stream? I do remember the original stream had a ton of issues but to my ears, this sounds like the best version out there.

Revisited my old copy and fixed the gaps in between songs so it plays seamlessly. I also split in the Monkey Riches / Brother Sport audio Pitchfork uploaded too, so at least there's 15 minutes of soundboard in there. For my money, the final 15 minutes is peak live AC.

Link is good for 2 weeks. Happy Friday!

anyone have advice on taping shows? i picked up a zoom h5 during the pandemic and am thinking about bringing it to the pitchfork date, but it would be my first time doing so. been looking at online tutorials but am more concerned about like, actually getting the recorder into the fest and safely placing it near the sound booth. is bribing the sound person with a beer a viable option or am i just overthinking this lmao

Guy on reddit is offering to master any boots
wrote:
If you make a bootleg (with something better than a phone) of one of the upcoming shows, send it my way and I will do my best to bring it to life. I’ll EQ the hell out of it, remove the mud, and unmask the frequencies. Stuff recorded on field recorder mics won’t sound as good as something recorded with a full setup, but I can most likely make it clearer/better. Bootleggers are a godsend to the community, and I just want to help.

Here’s an excerpt from the Meow Wolf show. The first 12 seconds are the original audio with some gain added so you can hear the actual shift in the audio quality and not just a volume jump. At 12 seconds, it changes to the version I mastered.

https://soundcloud.com/galindoi/meow-wo ... ng-excerpt

Best sound is probably going to be wherever the sound guy is (usually near the back?), plus less people moving. Hope this helps, any plans to catch/record Black Dice this fall?

Agreed about getting near the sound booth and making friends with the sound guy. If you can, get there early and bring an XLR and/or a 1/4 cable because you might get lucky and be allowed to get an out from the board. Ya never know. Everyone on the AC team I've met is super friendly. Will probably be trickier at a festival so maybe email/DM someone connected to the band to get written permission that will get you past initial festival security.

Get your recorder as high up as you can to minimize crowd noise. In the past, I've been allowed to put my recorder on the platform that the projector is on (around 10-12 ft up) and that's given me great results.

Record in 24 bit so you have the most information to work with. Try to get your levels right with an opening band. Not sure if the H5 has it, but most of the Zooms now have an option to record a redundant safety track that records 12 db lower than the original track. Comes in handy if you accidentally fudge the levels or if a section of a song peaks.

Feel free to send me the raw audio too. I'd love to mess around and master it. I've recorded a few shows in the past (AC Henry Miller 2019, Avey Asheville, etc.) with the H4n and the H6 and have had great results. Wish I could afford the time and money to get into better recording equipment like an actual rig but I'm happy with what I'm able to capture and share with the community. Feel free to message me too!

Happy Holidays everyone! Here's my recording of the boys at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur. I think the quality is absolutely gangbusters and a great document of the mini-tour. Also included openers Dustin Wong and Takako Minekawa's set too. Enjoy!

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Been meaning to say this for about 1.5 years: thank you (and—it’s almost here, again!—Merry Christmas). This boot sounds fantastic. Feel like I’m hearing these tunes in three dimensions finally. Excitement topped-up.

Hey there, I'm the guy from reddit offering to remaster bootlegs for the upcoming shows. The other comments offer some great advice on bootlegging. Live bootlegs tend to be really bass/mid heavy most of the time, but I can help polish things a bit. I can't work miracles, but I can improve things. Here's an example of an excerpt from the Meow Wolf show I spent about 10 minutes working on. The first 12 seconds are the original audio with a volume boost and then the mastering kicks in.

https://soundcloud.com/galindoi/meow-wo ... ng-excerpt

So yeah, if you can get me a FLAC (overrated*) or WAV file of the set, I'd be happy to work on it so that we can get a good bootleg out to everyone.

*FLAC purists are just maybe misinformed about its superiority. WAV is also a lossless format, just with bigger files sizes. Most people are going to convert either format to MP3 before they put it on their phone or whatever. 99/100 people can't tell the difference between a WAV/FLAC file and an MP3. Plus, a live bootleg isn't going to be as high quality as a studio recording anyway, so I kind of think people are worrying over nothing. Anyway, I'll send you the lossless format and an MP3 version so you can post both.

Just curious, is there a reason all the recordings here aren’t on archive.org? Only 36 shows on there and nothing before 2004. Just think it would be a good place to have all of this for safe keeping/ streaming purposes.

no reason. feel free to upload them! i'd be happy to meet up with someone and give access to the mediafire account to have easier access to downloads. it's about 300 files (some of which are duds, old links that got replaced for whatever reason). i think if i paid five bucks i could probably even enable multiple download instead of having to go file by file

Tried to upload the AVL show on there and it keeps telling me there is a network error. Don’t know if it’s something I’d have to do from a desktop, if that’s the case it will be a lot harder/ longer for me to be able to get anything up there.

Boutta upload the Pitchfork stream, both video and audio, but of course there's that problem of the stream getting cut off in the middle of DownDownDown until the end of Fickle Cycle. Let it be known that it wasn't my fault, and it was on Pitchfork's end. They wil probably upload the whole thing in full at a later date, but as it stands right now, this is the best we're getting of these new songs.

pitchfork isn't exactly known for being generous with live footage post-stream. i wouldn't count on them uploading the whole show tbh, they tend to just upload a handful of songs. maybe if we're lucky downdowndown will be one of em

They've been surprisingly generous with AC though. They've uploaded the Slasher Flicks and the Sung Tongs shows they did in full, so there's definitely a chance.

someone just posted a split pitchfork recording in the pitchfork thread. not sure their ripping methods but sounds good so far.

i've ripped and split the cinncinnati show, which i can upload. my process is that i use the MacX YouTube Downloader app, which is able to download videos at their original upload quality, and then i import the video into logic pro, extract the audio, split, and bounce it at either lossless or 320 depending on source material. works for me.
