can't stop listening to this EP. imo this is a glimpse of a direction they could've gone following MPP...it has the tight pop hooks and spacious reverbs of that record but with the noisy chaos and drifting interludes of their other work
I love how patient these new songs are....they camp out on a chord progression and slowly develop into bliss. The production is busy but all the elements are clearly audible. definitely their best release in a long time

People mentioning oddsac and tangerine reef, I'm hearing the morphing terrifying chaos of TTG with a more HiFi new psychoactives vibe

I was wondering why this reminded me of their live performances and I think this is it. Imo they're at their best when they extend their songs for 8+ minutes and just let them breathe

During the lockdown I remember thinking at one point "Dammit I wish AC was altogether cause they'd be the perfect band to release something during this period"
So I'm super glad to see they decided to.
It's a stellar release. Sonically it reminds me of bits and pieces of their discography but none of which hit this specific note. Most akin to TR or MotW, but certainly has a ton of their idiosyncrasies thrown in...It's another "wholley Animal Collective" release, and I love it for that.
Part of me hopes though, that this was a kind of microcosm of the general vibe their sound has always revolved around, and not specifically where their definitive structure is meant to go in the future. Nonetheless, if it does go this way I WILL NOT complain. Great EP, loving the boys rn ngl.
lmao this is a little too on the nose

Highly doubt that they'll ever play any of this live considering the way it came together, but I hope I'm wrong bc I need to dance to Piggy Knows with a crowd of people someday.

feels like the AC I've been waiting for since 2010 and after falling out of love a little yknow what I'm finally ready for it again

Agree with this assessment a lot. Don't know how closely you've been following them, but I'd definitely recommend checking out some of the boots from their 2019 tour. That stuff is largely even better than this EP imo.

am i the only one that doesn't hear panda on any of these aside from maybe drums on piggy ? y'all keep saying it's him on BTQ, but it just sounds like avey or deak singing into a vocal processor to me... this production hella reminds me of deak & avey's work on down there but through the lens of this new era of material... great fucking jammers, really excited for whatever else they started on while we wait for american quarantine to finish and they can get back in the studio.
also haven't seen anyone mention it but if y'all listen closely, i swear there's a whole ass deakin song in the first 2 min of BTQ under all that bit crushing

i am so, so glad they are being patient. thats what a lot of 2010s ac missed. it feels like every songs these guys have ever written is like 10 minutes long, but then they have to cut it down to 4/5 mins. when i saw the track times and it hit me that these were song-y songs i was overjoyeddd

The title track is finally clicking with me, so good. Only thing that still bugs me is Avey's vocal delivery, he feels a little too sedate imo. But I had the same issue with a lot of stuff on Cows and Conference of Birds, a lot of his recent studio vocal takes have felt kind of underwhelming to me. That's why I loved his folk medicine performance, he's best when he's just soulfully belting it out.

Yeah, as others have said, this really feels like a great summation of the last decade of stuff. I hear smears of Painting With, Tangerine Reef (especially), Psychoactives, TTG, FBK... It's catchy and spacious in all the right ways. Glad to see others are digging it as much as I am.

I notice there's no transition between piggy knows and sux-bier, so maybe this will come in vinyl later?

Rain in Cups is such a sweet song. I love how murky everything sounds, it reminds me of like MPP production but darker. also love the way the tempo changes in the chorus
I feel like I can hear Noah in there. some parts of it are lowkey hocketing lol

Damn this is solid! Best thing I've heard from any of them since Sleep Cycle. Yay

A lot of their stuff post-FBK which has tried to 'regain' the mysterious side has felt like the intent and craft are there, but the emotion and songwriting don't necessarily follow through as much as they once did. Parts of Cows/Birds, Psycho and Eucalyptus do at their best but I don't find them as satisfying or consistent as the peak stuff. This is the first thing which consistently hits those old spots, albeit with a newer take on the sound. Alternate post-MPP timeline is spot on. Great release, classic tier.

absolutely
one of the mythologies for ac's sound can best be imagined as:
feels –> strawberry jam –> centipede hz –> painting with –> merriweather post pavilion –> fall be kind –> bridge to quiet
not sure where other one-off albums / eps / solo work fit into this tree but i think its safe to say there are multiple timelines happening in their discography because time ain't linear, folks

on that note, i keep waiting for a student of richard tarnas to write a dissertation about the archetypal cosmology (that is, the astrology) of animal collective's releases

Ya PW, mpp and Danse (and fbk/painters)are still only deakinless releases right
And there's the pandaless stuff like tangerine and music box set.
And avey + geo do motw and psycho actives
And avey/panda have spirit and sung tongs.
Avey is the kind of required part for it to be ac I guess. Barring that deakin/panda live set in Japan or something?
Only full band releases are hcti, feels/people ep, sj/water curses ep, chz and I guess this. And clearly the next full length will be too

Kinda makes sense sux is mostly Dave/Brian, it's motw-y. Tho I think the vocal sample at the end is panda talking so it's still from a recording of all of them like deal said. Thanks for sharing

I guess that guitar on Bridge is avey which tracks. Verrrry hard to differentiate their guitar from their keyboard tho

Was this totally in-house, no engineer or anything? I'm still obsessed with their relationship with co-producers and engineers after all these years lol. I feel a bit creepy about it tbh

Well deakin said himself he was the main mixer..I like the mix so it makes me think they should just get Deak to mix everything including chz.

Wasn't that toured as Noah's Ark? Lending further credence to Avey being the only consistent member. Or am I forgetting something?
