Dancing, active crowds that are into the music are totally cool with me. I loved the energy during FloriDada and went totally apeshit myself, just stuff like pushing for the sake of pushing gets annoying real quick and I felt like that was happening a lot. I was stuck near a couple Purple Bottle-ers too.

I was totally expecting (and looking forward to) dancing and energy. Standing still at their show seems impossible to me! I got banged around, pushed off my feet, and shoved pretty good there for a bit - and I'd like to think I'm a tough broad ;) and just wondered if it was the norm on the floor or just Boston being Boston. I am not quite ready to balcony it quite yet. Gotta plan ahead for those TBA shows they are teasing later in the year.

Did anyone think the vocals were really off in Floridada? I could barely hear Dave or Noah for that one song in particular.

And in past experiences, crowds at Animal Collective shows have been notoriously bad. Inappropriate shoving, talking through openers (I was dying during Grouper) and quiet parts of AC songs, yelling out song titles, and somehow the most annoying, loud-talking, immature kids under 20. Tonight will be my tenth time seeing them and I can honestly said I've had good crowd experiences maybe 2 or 3 times. I don't know if that's just me being overly-sensitive or what, but I generally don't have problems with crowds at other shows.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kinda worried about the LA show, not because of the rough crowds or anything but last time people were stage diving and it was pretty cringeworthy (and a lot of them went straight to the floor).

Going to try and get the chicago show on Saturday with my new Zoom. Really worried about finding a good spot/getting in trouble with venue peeps.

idk but 90% of the audiences ive been part of in nyc have just been generally uncomfortable (coming from dc/bmore shows)

I'm curious about the crowd in NYC...or even of AnCo shows in general, if you can speak to this:
I started off about 3-4 "rows" of people back from Noah and Geo when they played in Boston on Monday night and ended up having to move way out to the left side because a mosh pit broke out. Dude. Moshing? Really? This didn't happen at the NH show, but I kind attributed it to the fact that it was New Hampshire and, well... cows live there. Not mosh pits.
This was only my second Animal Collective show; I have seen PB a few times, though - and the crowd was pretty chill overall. Tightly packed, but chill. When I hear you talk about the packed in factor it made me wonder about the slamming and pushing. Is that usually what the floor is like at the shows?
Just curious. It surprised me.

It's hit or miss but I've definitely been to some really brutal AC shows. I kind of love it though. Their Bonnaroo set was one of the craziest crowds I've been in-- more intense than Primus and Death Grips, which were both pretty gnarly. One time I puked in AC's most pit (this was the only time I have ever puked at a show) at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland. I wasn't even drinking booze (I was pretty high though), I had chugged some water before the show and with all the jumping/screaming/heat/crowd surfers it came right back up and I even thought I might faint for a second. I threw my sweater down over it and was pretty embarassed at the time but now it's one of my favorite Animal Collective stories.

I was punched really hard in the stomach at the Crystal Ballroom show (really douchy dude pushed his way up to the front and knocked an disabled person down and I yelled at him to be more respectful/aware and he yelled something and punched me) today's supernatural started and everyone started moshing and being ridiculous, I was bleeding after I wiggled my way out of the really ridiculous crowd up front. Even Avey repeatedly told everyone to calm down. Kinda bummed me out about the level of maturity with the younger fans. (I couldnt be in the 21+ section because my Drivers license was expired, even though I got through TSA for the flight to portland fine! :? )

Glad I didnt step in your puke!

I went to the chicago show a year or so later and it was so much better. I think a smaller venue and an older age group was the reason why the show was much more tame. I love to dance and freak out as much as the next guy but moshing/crowd surfing to AnCo is pretty unnecessary.

awesome. I went ahead and sent them an email to be sure. Do you know if there is a safe place at the venue to be away from the crowd a bit? I really don't want people bumping into the recorder, etc.

I generally hope there is movement, if people are generally feeling it, and wanna dance. I can't imagine moshing being the expression of dance that would fit though. Talking bugs me the most at shows. It is a performance for christ sake, you don't go see a theater performance and run your mouth the whole time. I just wish people could shut up for a second. I usually have a problem with most shows that I see these days, I start feeling sad for people who are acting ridiculous, or I get sad for the times. Usually, especially for animal collective, i just try to close my eyes and dance the whole time, try to get into a trance so nothing can bother me too much.

When my brother taped gogol he just hugged the rail. the pit behind him was wild but he was okay hugging the front rail. he set up front and center.

I ended up making it to the show last night and can confirm that the crowd was terrible, as usual. At least a third of the people there seemed to be obnoxious stoner bros who were wasted and talking/yelling/high fiving each another in between bouts of flailing around like they were hippies at Woodstock. The dancing is definitely more understandable, but the talking is what really grated me.

There was also a lot of people aggressively shoving their way to the front of the crowd after the place became packed. Tip: If everyone is crammed in to the venue like sardines and you didn't claim a spot up front then the solution isn't to rudely brute your way in. I don't care if your friends are up front or if your girlfriend wanted a drink from the bar...there's a certain point of capacity where you're just being an asshole.

Overall still a fun show though! Sorry for the negativity :|

I saw Panda Bear three times in New York and the crowds at all those shows were super chill and respectful.

Also, we are safe with the Fonda stage dive wise. They'll be plenty of security front and center just like in '09.

see i kinda NEED to get close tho? idk the sound can be great near the soundboard, but usually it isn't loud enough for me. favorite spot is nearly leaning on the stage, but like the corner of it, so ya i dont have the best angle, but im like right by an amp and kinda off to the side.

this was possible in philly on fri... but ya ny was the most packed ive evr seen a venue. didnt actually notice ppl being annoying really cuz i worked my way up to the balcony. i prefer a balcony to being in the back i think...

but ya kinda surprised to hear these crazy live stories lol, this doesnt seem like a mosh band at all, tho some of it will get me head banging pretty hard. but ya they def have their fair share of shitty fans (/mpp era sheep)

As soon as Golden Gal started, there was a group of people trying to mosh and aggressively pushing me and my friend. It was ridiculous

I'm all for dancing, but it's difficult in a venue that packed, and AC is definitely ill-fitting music to mosh to

totally agree it makes me a little sad/pissed off and takes so much away from the night whether people are being tense bummers or obnoxious moshers. its such a weird subject because theres not really a way to make everyone happy is there.

i guess ac is not the most appropriate music to start moshing but i have to say getting trapped in the mosh pit during purple bottle at one of their 930 shows was one of the best experiences ive had ever

edit: looks like i quoted the wrong post, i was commenting on someone saying the vocals in floridada sounded weird

I think it's because Noah changed his harmonies for the chorus, it didnt sound as soaring because he went safe and didnt try and hit that note.

Not sure why he chose to do that, he was hitting those notes all night, guess he got tired? Idk i havent seen any vids of the song live before i saw it last night.

otherwise, what a great show. Some REALLY good jams, I hope nyctaper got some good sound

also I saw some of you discussing the crowd. I had some trouble with people pushing through to get closer but i sort of just posted up near the sound guy cause i wanted to make sure it sounded great. didnt have the best view but it was great anyway.

I'm right there with ya. Pushy stoner bros suck but I'll deal with them if it means I can bliss out in the front. I'm crossing my fingers they can hit somewhere small in RI/CT/VT/ME... part of what made the NH show so magical for me was the small and mostly hardcore crowd.

Some girl jumped onstage and grabbed Noah's set list and a drum stick too. I understand the excitement at grabbing a set list but it's a pretty lame move to pull while the band is still playing...
