brothersport is more fun live. as a closer or otherwise. my opinion.

The current 10-minute techno odyssey version is arguably the best there's ever been, followed closely by OG pre-MPP.

The live Amanita threw me off at first. I was expecting that huge explosion after the "build it back up" section, but I think I prefer the way they play it at shows now. I love the synth/guitar parts and Panda's intense drumming and how they extended it for a few more minutes.

But purple bottle made up for that, especially since the whole crowd was freaking out, that was an INSANE encore (monkey riches -> brothersport -> purple bottle)

I still havent heard the chorus in Father Time even though ive listened to this album close to a hundred times.

maybe the nixed it but still credited the choir anyway for their hard work...? It is a kids choir after all... if anyone hears it please tell

It seems like i've kinda burnt myself out on CHZ from listening so many times after it came out, never get the urge to listen anymore, hopefully after waiting a few months i'll get right back into it.

I like both. But Amanita is such a better closer.
I have a friend whose copy of MPP was missing Brother Sport, and instead ended with No More Running. He said that he preferred it so much more without BS than with it. Not that he didn't like it, it's one of his favourite songs, it's just that he didn't think it was a good closer.
I tend to agree with him, I love the song, but it's not as good as Amanita in terms of closing an album.

I agree with this. No More Runnin' just feels more natural as a closer. And Bro Sport I think is one of the most overrated AC songs. It's a great song, but it's one that everyone really hypes up and pretends is the absolute end-all-be-all of awesomenessi n the AC discography.

i'm sorry, i know everyone loves amanita, but there's something about it that i can't put my finger on... i dunno it just feels kinda awkward. maybe the percussion stuff under the vocals seems very disjointed to me? (i'm talking about the first half of course... i think the end is absolutely stellar )

The end of Amanita reminds me of Spirit as well for some reason.

I'm really into Hollinn, HCTI and Danse atm though, and Spirit never gets old.

Yeah it seems like more out there and atmospheric music has better replay value in general.

That little wonky synth solo towards the end always reminds me of something from Water Curses and Strawberry Jam. That granulized, LFO'd synth sound. So awesome.

Man, Scaruffi's review of CHZ is so harsh it's almost hilarious:

Opener Moonjock is emblematic of the state of the band: a third-rate Beatles melody, third-rate Beach Boys harmonies and third-rate sound effects, a deadly combination salvaged towards the end by an honest burst of tribal joviality. When the chaotic arrangements relent, the scarce substance of the music is mercilessly revealed, e.g. in terribly trivial songs like Today's Supernatural and Wide Eyed. Where they found the guts to insert things (let's not call them "song") like FatherTime and New Town Burnout will remain a mystery. Panda Bear should blush for how he wastes Rosie Oh: his singing style has become a major annoyance. The faked exuberance of the album is a major drawback even on the few valid songs, ruining even the melodic progression and rhythmic invention of Applesauce, the hysterical Talking Heads-ian jamming of Monkey Riches and the exotic Japan-esque techno-rock of Amanita. The best one can say is that this album is a polyrhythmic feast. But one can't help wonder whether this wasn't simply meant as a joke on us.

It seems like reviewers who don't know much about making music love to use the term "polyrhythmic" to describe anything with an interesting/slightly irregular beat, regardless of whether it is an actual polyrhthym or not.

Yep. Ain't no overlapping time signatures on CHz that I'm aware of. It's like people hear 5/4 or 7/8 or anything that changes signature throughout the song and they start using all these big go-to words.

The Animal Collective can be summed up as Tribal, Polyrhythmic, Syncopated, Beach Boys, Psychedelic Drugees

Polyrhythm doesn't mean it's a weird time signature, it means that there is many rythmic patterns that are mixed together. Best example that would come to mind is Crosseyed and Painless by Talking Heads.



Notice how the bass, guitar and percussions seem to be doing their own thing, on a completely different pattern than one another. Only the drum seem to follow a somewhat linear course. It's still a 4/4 song.

no brosport is a much better song than amanita. it is just a lot more memorable

i actually think Pulleys would be a pretty sweet closer. a lot of people dislike the song but i find it really powerful. I don't know what feeling amanita is trying to convey in contrast

but dude. amanita gives you the same samba that bro sport does, but first theres this big sprawling adventure to get there. bro sport is frankly pretty boring in comparison, and i dont think hits half as hard as what amanita delivers.



i think to describe CHz as polyrhythmic is fair, but tedious. one should use restraint when using music terms
