That last song is bizarrely below par for them, feels like someone else wrote it. Everything else I like the sounds in many places but wouldn't listen to it separate from the film. As I say, it's not for me and I hope it leads to another income stream for them.
Hearing the director actually has a writing credit on it so that goes some way in explaining the decidedly un-avey lyrics.

This makes me feel so much better. A courageous and decent recovery job then.

The last track ain't as weird as everyone keeps saying it is after coming back for another listen. I'm inclined to say that they just mixed it like a standard fucking pop song and so it kinda sounds flat and 'out front'.

I like pretty much everything about it apart from the lyrics. Indigo sounds great on it. Ain't as bad now as I thought at first but still ain't great

not a big fan of listening to soundtracks outside of the context of the film in general but as far as they go this one is pretty good. some of the instrumentals (Shelter to Inez, Shower Fantasy, Flashlights, etc) are compelling on their own but the rest don't make much sense without the visual component. Crucible and Disappear French are beautiful, Wish I Knew You is pretty forgettable

New interview here

Most interesting thing is Deakin saying the label has no input or whatever which probably means we're just getting mad at domino for no reason.

do you feel that you’ll continue embarking on these projects as a band?
Dibb: Given the opportunity, it’s something that a few of us enjoy quite a bit.
Weitz: I’d love to do it. I mean, I love doing Animal Collective, making records and touring. But with the time we’re not doing that, I could do this all day.
Filmmaker: I’m glad. Studio interference can sometimes really sour that sense of creative collaboration. It’s nice that it wasn’t too daunting or imposing during this process.
Dibb: It’s definitely new territory for us. I mean, this was a great process and there’s nothing to really complain about. But I think feeling those frictions are just new experiences for us as a band. We don’t work with producers that have any sway over what we’re doing. Our label never has any sway
Sounds to me like he's referring to soundtracks/collaborations. Domino definitely has sway on album release dates. MPP was in the can for a while, Jan 2009 was the earliest Domino would let them release it. Buouys and Cows were done long before their release but Tangerine Reef bumped them both to the following year.

Yeah. I think he's even just talking about sway over their creative process w regards the music. Which, yeah, obviously doesn't exist

Cool interview. Love that they go to each other for sounds that aren't in their own "wheelhouse."
My initial thoughts on "Wish I Knew You" weren't the greatest but with time I've grown to like that song quite a bit (still not huge on the lyrics). The idea of Avey and Indigo doing a more extensive collab project together could really be something special.
I hope they don't release it in reverse.

It's fun to comb through the ASCAP directory and see 95% of who's credited with each song on the score. I counted only 4 of the 30 songs are without proper title/credit. Fun variations abound though: this is definitely Dave's score primarily, though Brian has a couple of solo cuts and for the first time (I think) we have a Brain/Noah pairing ("Thanksgiving").

Primarily Dave for sure but Brian and Josh are also on a significant number of tracks. Very minimal credit to Noah.
I assume these unassociated titles can easily be matched if you watch the film

I didn't think AC had anything to do with the serpentwithfeet track but turns out Geo and Deak did additional production/electronics

Just watched this. Zero surprise that 'shower fantasy' is credited to Dave and Noah

So funny to hear Griffin Newman shout out Animal Collective. It’s like my obsessions colliding lol

Finally gave this a listen. Interesting once I think.
Will take Phase 1, Crucible and Disappear French away but not much else.
Wish I Knew You was odd. Not sure how I feel about it.
