DO IT! It's crazy easy and very rewarding. I have a Zoom H6 and it's gotten some great results.

-Get a big enough/fast enough card so you don't have to worry about space. (32GB works great)

-Record at the highest sample rate / bit depth (24bit / 96k)

-Make sure to utilize the "safety recording" feature on the H6 which records a backup file at a lower volume

-Get there early and be upfront and open with the pros working the soundboard. AC isn't gonna give you a line in to the soundboard (which is common and completely understandable) but they're very gracious and empathetic towards our humble goals as fans.

-If you can't bring a stand or anything, find a place near the soundboard to put it. The general goal is: the higher up and more center the mics are, the better.

-Get your levels during the opening act and leave plenty of headroom. You want a strong signal but the last thing you want is for the signal to peak.

-Once it's set, forget about it. First and foremost, enjoy the show. Even if the recording ends up being unusable, at least you can rest easy knowing you had a blast.

Can't WAIT to see everyone out there this Spring!

Thanks for these tips! I remember reading you had done some of the 2021 tour with the H6 and had already been wanting one for practice recordings so I went for it. Do you use the standard mic clips? I've been using the MS in our practice space but I was thinking the more directional x/y clip might be better for a big room kind of show.

I've experimented with both over the years and I've found I've gotten better results with X/Y for live music. X/Y is a little more balanced and if you're micing from the soundboard, you get a nice, directional, even representation of the mix, which you can tweak in post.

I usually use MS in a more controlled environment when I want to really hone the stereo image in post production. MS recordings give you a wider stereo image which could technically be considered better but if you're recording from the soundboard, the L/R mic tends to pick up way more audience ambience/wind/unwanted venue reverb on the left and right so you're essentially capturing more information you'd want to filter out in post.

When edited correctly, MS recordings can lead to stunning stereo recordings (and the dense, layered sound of AC live might benefit from a wider stereo image that would allow for more instrument separation / definition) but chance are, you'll just end up picking up more unwanted sonic info. MS might work better if the recorder was directly in front of the stage, on the rail as opposed to by the soundboard.

Would be super interested to record an AC show with one of each mics side by side and compare the recordings afterwards.

That feel when you're stuck in the dead center of this country and the nearest show is 6.5 hrs away.... Def debating if I should drive or fly to Minneapolis, Is there a midwestern support group for people whose favorite bands never come to their city?

I wonder if they'll add more dates after the first American run or rest til Europe.

How many people are planning to record on this tour?

I'm debating picking up a zoom. Although technically the policy of the venue doesn't allow it it says it may change based on the artist. I'm doubtful the boys would specifically inform any of the staff that it's cool.

The closer these get the more I have no idea what to expect. I'm sure we'll get mostly skiffs era stuff but with Noah saying "three years is too long" and that if he had his way they'd never play old songs I gotta imagine they're itching to get into some new stuff. Also concerned about his hand and drumming.

Hoping they don't cut down on some of the jammier sections of the skiffs songs too now that the record is out, i need that car keys intro.

Also kind of a dumb thing to complain about but as a fan who is at the level of posting on here and knows all the songs that aren't on Time Skiffs I kind of wish I didn't. Hoping for at least one completely new song.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I live in FL & have been dying to see AnCo since 2011 (the last time they were in Orlando, though I did see Avey in '19). I bought a ticket to the 9:30 show last night on a whim. I've never been to DC either, so im very very excited. Anyone meeting up? Any DC suggestions?

Ooh have fun! I just took a solo trip up there for the first time last summer. I had a great time but I stayed in Manhattan. Delicious dollar pizza on every block was a revelation. Gonna have to explore the other boroughs next time

I just got a ticket and plane ticket to Atlanta show during my spring break. They said they're about to announce more dates and I bet one of them will be Denver, but fuck it, I'll kick myself if it isn't and I don't have anything else to do during my week off and flight refund burning hole in my pocket

anyway, super stoked, might dip off the boards the week the shows start to save myself from spoilers

got an ATL heads goin?

Nearly a week away! Finally grabbed NJ tickets so I'm in for two shows. Anyone wanna make some crazy tour predictions? Still curious how Noah's hand injury will effect these shows if he's not healed up yet.

Is it of any potential concern that Noah couldn't do the AMA last week because he was still in Portugal? You would've thought they'd be doing a couple weeks of practicing leading up to the tour no?

I feel like the extended rehearsal times before the last two tours really had to do with writing. Now all of the songs are written and recorded, so they probably don't need more than a week or two to get back into it and work on any old songs they're bringing back

Do you guys like to listen to the previous boots before going to a show? I don't think I've ever done that but I might on this tour, not sure if it would enhance or detract from the experience

I've been holding off 2019/2021 shows but listening to a lot of older boots to scratch the itch. At this point it migt not matter but I want to try to go in as fresh as possible. I'm excited to finally see them on a tour where they are kind of playing new non album stuff even if it's not new to me. Also planning on dropping off here at least until after the Brooklyn show for that reason.

Anyone going to the first night? Curious about merch but want to avoid the setlists.

I wish I had the willpower to stay off of this subforum for next 2.5 shows until Atlanta, but I don't think I will. ;_;
