never thought about it but i could imagine surfers hymn on mpp. warmer production, dave singing the harmonies, some geo additions to the synthetic burbles and you're there. they should bust it out next tour as a group.
Monkey Riches
ya, my first thought was that you were thinking of "Monkey Riches" when thinking of how "Surfer's Hymn" could've sounded on CHz
it comes down to aesthetic preferences and i get if you loved CHZ it would've been sick to hear SH in that context... for me, 2011 was chalk full of beach vibes... coming off 2010 which had Beach Fossils and Wavves and a ton of beachy psych, surf pop, jangle, etc. 2011 had another killer Real Estate record, etc. so Panda popping up solo with his brand of a beach song was just perfect... for me Surfer's Hymn had to stay warm and tropical and minimal...CHz busy-ness and sonic assault feels like a weird mesh for me personally
in the end, glad you brought it up all the same cuz it got me listening to Surfer's Hymn a ton, i kinda got addicted to the 7" mix version - so much that i just bought a copy of the 7" off Discogs and eagerly await its arrival
Panda Bear on Kompakt with a 7" cover that says "TECHNO" in itself is way too cool... sometimes i forget AC got their music on Kompakt... with them being huge fans of the label and all, very cool development, would like to see them branch out passed Domino a bit more to do singles like that...
maybe Avey's "heart attack" song as a single on some label or somethin...

surfers hymn is a 2008 track, though. he was "ahead of the wave" so to speak

wow cool, i'm not surprised! it's the closest thing to the Person Pitch vibe on Tomboy...

Surfer's Hymn does kind of feel like the bridge between Person Pitch and Tomboy. Speaking of, does anyone know where this demo originated? I've had the file for a long time (can't remember where it came from) and it sounds like an early version. [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/lordlicorice/surfers-hymn-demo[/soundcloud]

IIRC some guy who posted on here got it from a friend of his who was friends with Noah? I want to say that the guy then reached out to Noah to ask if it was alright for him to post it, and Noah said yes.
At least, that's how I'm remembering it. Could very well be wrong.

Something I've always loved about that beat in the older Hymns. It actively creates this friction with the vocal melody and shouldn't really be there but still works somehow. The heartbeat of another song transplanted into this one, keeping it just about alive

Sir, about that time... I find legendary this performance, with you involved....I think it was also maybe a seminal seed of what eventually will happen years later

Also I find incredibile that idea of drop this one minute and half intro in national television, I think he tells very well what kind of wild years were

Most magical ac record with mpp and pp. Says Most about what age I am and when I started with them but ya idk the space fantasy vibes of this record's sound design own so fucking hard. I still don't and didn't then fully "get" some of the darker, repetitive doom-y sounds of title track and Drone but also like. I do get it. They just seem so different for him at the time cuz the melody was brutalistically minimal, like he wanted to buck against the sunshiney, tropicaly pop of sj/pp/mpp era and it was this whole new side of him.
Alsatian, jetty, yccom, friendship, surfer and benfica are just so damn sweet. And afterburner feels like the proggy culmination of the title track vibes. Makes me wanna listen to one of the ancient 2010/11 boots
