Did we ever figure out that strange Domino shipping email that a few people got?

must have missed the posts about domino shipping emails but last week a few people received surprise records from domino of the new panda bear feature step by step, similar to when people randomly received that eucalyptus box and the cows on hourglass pond art

! I hadn’t heard that records were sent by surprise! Any freebirds that aren’t the radio rip?

not that i've seen, here's a post on the ac subreddit about it:

https://old.reddit.com/r/AnimalCollecti ... om_domino/

looks like step by step is the b side, a side is not ac related. i think i remember another poster saying in the pb features thread that it's part of a full ep coming out in april/may

yeah dude I wasn't a huge fan of MPP, CHz, or PW but this has me back on board big time

have loved most of the EPs etc of those albums but I haven't been enamored with a full length for the past few cycles, feels so good, been making me revisit all of their incredible earlier stuff and dive into the rarities once more

yep that was the album that got me to stop listening to boots, for me it was butchered and bled lifeless in the studio, for every track on the studio album there are several live versions that are vastly superior imo, in my digital library I've actually replaced the studio version of brother sport with a live version that has adequate screaming lol

I have said this plenty over the years but...it should have been a live album (fitting the name), and I will die on this hill!

DEMO-ITUS IS REAL FOLKS

Image

to clarify, every one of those albums have a few fantastic songs that I absolutely love, but none were front to back perfect like their other stuff imo

I do realize it is prob their most successful/accessible album and that is good, I like that

I do have vivid memories of listening to the xmas freebird over and over and just not feeling it, and not understanding why and what had happened :(

I still listen to it a few times a year in attempt to force it to click for me but it has not worked yet

I heard a lot of hype about R&D before I listened to the album. On my first listen I thought it was nice but not as brilliant as expected as it kind of just breezed by. On my second listen I thought it was fucking brilliant and since then it's kept growing on me.

I love making lists and I feel like I've been with the album enough now (I listen to many songs on it daily) to say that R&D is a top 10 AC song for me, maybe even pushing top 5. It's an epic up there with WWIW?S, Brother Sport, Fireworks, Banshee Beat, and Street Flash. It's such an effortlessly pleasant but juicy listen, underpinned by amazing vocal performances all round.

I'm a bit obtuse when it comes to lyrics and their meanings at first, so I don't know what it's about yet, but musically it's been a real solace in these trying times, what with Ukraine and eastern Australia floods and me just having got covid. It's nice to know it will be there for me for many years to come (R&D, not covid).

Does anyone else restart Dragon Slayer if it doesn't hit you hard enough by the second chorus? This song should be at least 10 minutes. I want to stay in it!

Time Skiffs really clicking today. Don't think you're above it, infinite blasts of light!

Damn hypo's that's interesting, a live album. Never thought of that. Thank God I wasn't a fan pre-MPP, think the demoitis would've killed me

I would love to pick Avey's brain about the lyrics to Dragon Slayer and what they mean to him. I think about them a lot. "Where the red fire wanders, I'll walk in its veins." The hero in the belly of the beast. Amazing

MPP wasn't a 10 when I heard it right away. SJ was more immediately satisfying, while Feels was also a bit too subdued for me. Funny how perspective changes everything

A large part of the hype for MPP was simply because the songs were so fucking good live and people were like holy shit bro we knew Animal Collective were great but these songs are fucking' next level' bro in the indiesphere have you heard Will To Joy you're gonna love it it's sick and you gotta 'check out' Pan Flute Jam brehhhhhhh check out my blogspot

scary to think of life without deep love for MPP the actual album. But I was blessed to not know the glory of live MPP first.

Ok that song's lyrics are by far the most cryptic on the album, next to Car Keys, but it actually feels very inspired by post-greater Panda in his cryptic mode.

I mean esp this part:

Enemies change their minds
Don't think you're above an
Infinite blasts of light on wooded cares
Elements in the mine are tipping the public
Focusing on design from burning stairs

wtf does that mean. 'Mine' instead of 'mind'? Wooden cares? Tipping the public??? 'Stairs' and not 'stares'?!

Yeah like when that first live video of Will to Joy dropped - I think it was Iowa City 2007? - I knew that we had something special on our hands. For them to have started touring these fucking awesome songs before SJ even dropped, it was too good to be true. What an incredible era, what a time to be a fan. I really wish they'd do a live release of thise 2007-08 versions. So many little differences I still miss, like Avey's old melody in My Girls, or "let it come, let it come right out" in Brospo, or OG TASTE

Yeah, Avey's 'soul' vocal melody in House was amazing. I was too excited for the actual album to really give a shit about what was and wasn't in there but it hit much harder/more emotional live, I guess like pretty much everything they do. I still love MPP and absolutely adored it for a long time after release, but those live shows...

Err I'm getting deja deja vu...I'll stop there.

I think of a wooded care as like something you're concerned with that has to do with the woods. Or maybe just caring about something in a foresty way. These are the Forest Children we're talking about after all

Dragon Slayer is so understated but so great. Doesn't waste a second, captivating all the way through. Avey really has gone beast mode with his songwriting

the clip that starts at the 16 second mark has been getting stuck in my head quite a bit... "better off lately, just doing better off now"
gimme a full finished version of that. back to back on the album with panda's comes and goes.

Imagine the look on my face when i first heard strung!!! couldn't stop smiling! They did such a great job with it, was so happy that didn't end up being one of those AC/avey solo songs lost to time, that clip was stuck in my head for 3 years. I think panda unfortunately said he didn't have plans for comes and goes which is a shame, cool tune!

Bearhug to me is maybe the one AC song that I feel soul crushed about--it was so perfect live, and I feel did not get it's due in the recording process, my god it was so raw. I still refuse to call the song by it's eventual name--they are two different tracks to me.

Melkweg is the most perfect document we have of it IMO.

Pre-divorce lyrics

You can hear Avey exorcising his feelings about their split in 2009 boots--check out the Paradiso show:

On lead up to Guys Eyes he repeats "stay! don't go! you've got to stay, don't go!"

On Fireworks breakdown he repeats "I was wrong!" over and over

it's stirring, must've been a really hard time for him...
