i agree that editing the past in this way is taking it too far but it's so inconsequential and doesn't harm anyone so fine

It's not like they changed anything that was vital to the art itself. I mean, it's music lol. That part is still the same. How often do album reissues occur where they receive different art? Many forms of art, but albums in particular, get revisions all the time. This isn't much different. HCTI wasn't a great album because of it's title, it's a great album because the music inside is unique and beautiful and takes you to different places. A quality which frankly has little to do with the title being HCTI or Ark. You can't really compare it to something like say Django Unchained, where the offending material is a key part of the entire subject and what the art is trying to say.

Also, it's not as if this is the first time an artist has re-issued an album with a new name or cover art. Broken Social Scene, Nine Inch Nails, Kraftwerk et al. have all completely redone an album's cover (actually, eight for Kraftwerk) because it doesn't match their later visual style and nobody cares, but AnCo changes an album's art because they feel uncomfortable with the racial stereotype depicted and it's met with handwringing about "self-censorship" and "editing the past"?

i should've been clearer since this is an especially tender subject as of late. others here could certainly articulate this better than me.

like i said, the changes are very minor so it's harmless in the grand scheme of things. but when it comes to cultural (mis)appropriation, historical mistreatment of different cultures, power imbalances, etc. i do think it's important to hold a candle to our errors of the past to emphasize our humanity moving forward. because an ideal world where nobody says offensive words and nobody gets offended will never exist. being able to point at a piece of art i made when i was 20, to say out loud, "look at my ignorance in this moment" is crucial for making progress, i think. my intuition tells me that tending to move towards self-censorship pushes things in the opposite direction on the continuum of progress.

i'm not as invested as i'm making it out. i guess i'm just defending myself against many of the previous posts that seem to disagree with this opinion.

Isn't this essentially what they've done? No erasure has happened here either. Anyone can and will see the alteration when they look into the band's history.

I mean, maybe insofar as it emboldens reactionaries to keep using particularly inflammatory language, which I think it definitely does. But fuck those people.

What can we all agree on? It's killer that the band is still paying attention to their past! What a time when we get two unearthed shows from the early days AND a super long EP...not to mention quality releases of hard to find gems like Mountain Game and Wastered.

If the band didn't have a back log of masterpiece material waiting to get worked out in the studio (another miracle), I'd love for them to find creative ways to embrace their revisions.

I'm not going to re-purchase the music just for new artwork and that's clearly not the band's intention BUT it creates an interesting opportunity. Reissue HCTI / Ark and People with new demos or an accompanying show from that era.

Hell, why not blast through the material again in the studio and put out a 2020 performance of the album(s) on a second LP alongside the original. What a way to warm-up in the studio after the pandemic hibernation. Put it out with the new artwork and donate a percentage of the profits to apt charities/organizations.

Just wishful thinking.

Also I assume everyone upset about this title change still refers to the first couple albums as Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist right?

Yeah! Like how a record might get the 25th anniversary treatment or whatever—get remastered, some added treats, maybe a “special edition” alternate cover... make it something new, not just taking a scalpel to the past and flushing something down the memory hole. I mean, it’s Animal Collective! These guys are the most sensitive, thoughtful musicians alive. No one was going to accuse them of being ham handed with prickly race stuff. Intent matters. And I would bet nobody in the band had any malice in his heart towards anyone during the making of any of their records. Back to the music...

It's absolutely fine for artists to go back and revise their old material if they want, especially if it's something as minor as an album title. Ark is a better title tbh and it's a good change

The specific kind of childish, unassuming naïveté that leads to a title like “HCTI” is pitch-perfect for AC’s early catalogue. In a vacuum this is beautiful but it would be ridiculous to hope that it was never addressed/fixed.

the singles are all on bandcamp now and you should be able to download those as flac/wav. is this what you're looking for?

Revisiting Chz right now and feeling like a goof for ever downplaying this album. Can only chalk it up to me wishing it was “cooler” in some way. Looking back it makes perfect sense that avey’s songwriting became largely “corny” (or maybe “geeky” or something?) in the 2010s... it’s exactly what was spiritually therapeutic as pop culture had become sexy and cool in an aesthetically dignified way (a la young thug etc.) as opposed to the corny coolness of 2000’s Britney Spears etc.

Is corniness a completely arbitrary cultural thing or is it an objective aspect of aesthetics like I viciously believe it is?
