I got into AC when sung tongs had first come out so i has the experience of hearing both it and all of feels fresh without having heard any bootlegs or singles. Oddsac, down there, and the most recent era of stuff is the only music by the AC guys that's been released in the past 12 years where I didn't have a strong expectation for what the music would be like.
Painting with - I feel like almost everything is presented up front. What you can take on pm the first listen is closer to what you'll be taking in on the 100th listen. I don't feel like that is the case, though, for any of the other music I listed. Especially Eucalyptus. I'm remembering back to Feels and how there were some obvious immediate standouts and then jams like Daffy or Flesh Canoe that I just didn't "get" at all yet. Likewise, the beauty of cemeteries was lost on me for a while when down there came out.
I think that just due to the nature of the jams on Eucalyptus that some of this is going to be grower.

Listened a few times now. Truly a beautiful record. Once I put it through my stereo system it really took shape. I plan on buying it the day it comes out at my record store. I really like the direction Avey took on this and the Meeting of the Waters EP. As cringing as it is for me to try to listen to painting with, these 2 records have revived my love for their music.
Now I can only hope the set of music I heard him play at the Mothlight gets recorded as well. I listened to Eucalyptus, Meeting of the Waters, and his Mothlight set all back to back yesterday, Avey is on a good path here, hope he keeps it up!

I would love it if the next AC record had this kind of vibe, slower, more spacious and dreamy and floaty but with more... focus I guess you could say? Stronger melodies and tighter song writing and structures and more development within the songs ? Stuff like banshee and daffy and loch raven all have this same mellow vibe but have more direction and purpose I guess you could say? A lot on here is a bit too meandering for me... I do love the atmosphere and aveys more direct emotion though. Excited to see what's in store for the boys !

Yes, and it sounds more like a collection of (sometimes unfinished) songs, especially in the second part. But at the same time, this is what makes it more exciting than Painting With or even CHz. Eucalyptus is bubbling with ideas and interesting experimentations on sounds and songs structures that give me the feeling that I still have something to discover after repeated listens. Sometimes, I love listening to imperfect albums with momentaneous bright and beautiful melodies or sounds, emerging from something more abstract or laborious. Those bright moments sound even better and make the album more living. This is what I loved on TTG and on Burial's Truant / Rough Sleeper, for example.

I feel like calling thing officially released unfinished is kinda weird. Especially after listening a few times, all these tracks have very discernible structures and melodies. Idk I hate being the "listen more" dude, but with each new listen I'm digging this album more, especially the first 3 tracks. The back half was more immediately amazing to me tho, like Selection of Place, Roamer, Coral Lords, Sports in July, When You Left Me - these songs feel about as far from unfinished as I could think

i feel u, i think that "unfinished" is kind of too often used as a catch-all term for something meandering or momentous as the last few posts put it, but for me terms like "meandering" and "momentous" are good things and remind me of my favorite AC releases like ST, Oddsac, NPA1, Coral Orgy... to me it describes something that is dynamic, always in flux--also good things in my opinion. But the catch-all "unfinished" creates kind of a disconnect where you are using a word with negative connotation to describe something that u like. But most basically i just really enjoy that in addition to the fact that each song is really wonderful at its most essential level already (i like this album more than down there already after like 5 listens), there are also these ideas scattered throughout that are kind of here and gone again quickly and don't last too long, sugary sweet moments within already amazing songs that i also enjoy

Don't know what you're talking about. There's tons of meandering parts on this album. It comes across as organic though, rather than haphazard
It definitely took me a while to really gel with this album, but during the last three listens things have finally clicked. Through Avey's catharsis, I'm able to really empathize with his mood. Its like a mix between solitude and gratitude. It's currently providing even more feels than Feels provides for me. Like on a human level I feel a very sustained connection to what Dave is singing about.
The one part that still has yet to settle in for me is the beginning. There's parts of Season High that I like, but Melody Unfair kinda dulls the starting momentum. I need to give it more time, but currently I feel more in tune with starting the album at Ms. Secret

i think the autoharp part in coral lords may be one of the most beautiful moments in AC history

Man meandering is a really reductive euphemism for atypical structure. It's literally u just hearing something that isn't verse-chorus-bridge structure no offense. Ms secret and jackson 5 and maybe even coral lords r only ones that fit that... feel like we haven't heard this Avey in a long time or ever. Reminds me of pre 07 writing but different. Comparing it to slasher and DT is so weird. Such different vibes..

Roamer, pj and boat race are real screw balls for me. Definitely didn't see that coming. I like em tho kinda remind me of syd Barret or a weird version of Ariel pink. Didn't see this coming at all was expecting a kind fun catchy psych record in the vein of DT plus sleep cycle but instead its this heavy af electroacoustic psych country thing. Very cool. Still sinking in and it's nice

Melody unfair is a code for like how the melody in that one feels elusive and it fits how the whole thing has weird structure and sometimes collagey changes I think.. heavy first 3 tracks. And then in pieces to coral lords is kind of nuts
Also it's weird af to hear country ish/bluesy guitar parts and even jazz in l ooo 1 and sports . And the steel guitar and angels vocals give this a crazy haunted beach/canyon above a Marsh vibe. Oddsacy too

I think I realized I don't like the timbre of Angel's voice or something. I kinda wish it was all AV.

This. My god. I have missed this AC impact
Also I'm enjoyed this convo. Eucalyptus is a grower record for sure. The songwriting is structured, just not in a "traditional" way of doing so. Each track is like a mini sonic journey.

season high is beyond beautiful and not getting enough love in this thread. it just hit me all of a sudden as i was wandering around the city at night in a daze.. a very very solid opener, the exact kind of melancholic chords i know n love from av
edit: also lunch out of order 1&2 sounds like it should be the closer

I just cannot get into the folksy bluesy country stuff (like the whole first minute of selection of a place) but then it turns into the best song ever...soooo idk, that's how i feel about the album. so much amazing stuff but a little too inconsistent for me

to call season high a favorite would make too many favorites but it's damn good. i love how everything falls down. i wish jessika kenney had more parts on the album because her singing part in that song has been stuck in my head all day

i'm also having trouble accepting this selection of a place. demoitus is truly a vibe killer

on my first listen i had a negative impression but i really like this now. i think it's probably since i was expecting more happy pop songs and was hit with these sad/creepy vibes. i agree that it doesn't reach the highs of ac's previous acoustic / somber stuff and i think there are a few sections that feel underwhelming within the context of a song (angel or jessika's singing part in PJ, the ending of selection of a place, the bridge in season high). but this is one you can really get immersed in which i love to see

As someone who did not like Slasher Flicks that much and would rate Down There fairly low on the boys' solo works, this is outstanding to me. Just gorgeous and minimal while still being multi-layered. This is the Avey solo effort I've been looking for.

Sigh....
apologies for using a "reductive" word for what the word means? Only meant that I like the fact that the album goes a lot of places and covers a lot of territory...... Hopefully that phrasing is satisfactory.
The first three songs remain my favorite so far I think

Listened to this over the weekend driving home from visiting my parents while it rained with the sunset peaking through the clouds and my puppy sleeping next to me. It was a beautiful experience. My favorites after a few listens are Season High, Ms. Secret, Jackson 5, In Pieces, Boat Race, and Roamer.

Holding out on listening to this for now but I'm so happy that the reception has been positive by most people here! The album sounds super interesting based on everyone's descriptions. Can't wait!

Me too. And I would probably add PJ and When You Left Me for its beautiful ending.

I thought the Meeting of the Waters EP would be enough of mellow acoustic/ambient songs for me and hoped for something completely different, but I was so wrong. I'm really really glad this record exists. I can't even pick a fav, so many beautiful sounds on this album.

I think it is a very tapestry-like record, and as mentioned up thread, there's an element of Burial's more abstract structural stuff to it. Not that it's been influenced or informed by Burial, just an observation, and that patchwork structure is something I love in general in music. Look at Smile for similar, a thousand fragments stuck together. Again, not claiming either influence or parity, but there's a similar effect, ideas formed, developed and cast aside for the next. I don't see much - if any - of this as Animal Collective music, intended to be developed with a full band. It exists perfectly and coherently in this fragmented, inquiring fashion. It's quintessentially Dave, rather than AC, in fact. It doesn't have the sculpted peaks or the energetic momentum of a full band but it has its own cumulatively cathartic intensity.

Someone called the new Twin Peaks the "pure heroin version of David Lynch." This feels like the "pure heroin" version of Avey Tare.
I love how dry and earthy Eucalyptus sounds, and so desert-y visually. It feels loose in a way that he hasn't sounded since Sung Tongs (a good companion piece to this, don't you think?). Brilliantly subtle and hallucinogenic in a way, even cinematic. The songs feel like pure Id, too; "first thought, best thought" kind of thing. I love how much space there is inside these songs, given how dense AC-affiliated records have been for so long. There is a part of me that feels like the record is kind of slight though, or sort of embryonic, like the songs were "picked before ripe." Maybe that's part of its appeal, too. It's raw and ramshackle vibe is really intimate, like a peek into Avey's head as all these ideas are germinating and flying around. First five tracks are my favorite, I think. "Lunch Out of Order Pt. 2" in particular; something about that vocal melody. "Family ties are everywhere"... is that what he's saying at the end of it?
Fantastically strange, evocative and immersive. Neo freak folk. Ha. I love it!

I am loving this album. I've been a little discouraged since Painting With (I've actually been digging that too lately, after a bunch of listens, finally), but this is great. Can't stop listening

has anyone noticed that avey sings a very similar melody to dr aw one for J during the intro of bees in the 9/23 big sur camping bootleg? it's one of my favorite moments from the PW-era bootlegs so far
