yeh love that line.

i listened to skiffs on a long drive yesterday and just sang along to the whole thing.

lots of my listening up until this point has been quite focussed, trying to pick out all the details etc.

it was awesome to just belt out the songs. it already feels like a classic to me. it just sits so nicely in my zone if you know what i mean

he says at the end of the interview they put together *26* songs in 2019 —— i think that's more than what we've heard before?

I love avey so much. I feel like he has a knack on articulating his words which is funny cause some of the best ac lyrics are about fucking up communication.

So if they recorded 9 songs, assuming they did all 8 of the 2021 live songs, that leaves one we don't know (what if it's the bog lol).

If they end up splitting it into an LP and EP I could totally see like 6 songs on the album, 3 on the EP. I feel like Soul Capturer and Gem and I are most likely to be on an EP if I had to guess, everything else fits together pretty well but idk

Other way around!

EPIC 3 song album: Magicians, Defeat, Genies

then a 6 song EP with the rest

make it happen AC!

This album, while very good, feels more the result of circumstance (remote recording/too many songs) than vision. While songs like Magicians, Defeat, and Genie's Open all feel a part of the same sonic stew, I can't really say the same for any three songs on Skiffs. It feels like a record of leftovers. Not in a bad way, because each song is itself a delicious bite, but in a way where some times you just need to clean out the fridge. The biggest strength the album isn't how tight it feels as a whole, but how each track, big and small, is given equal room to shine. The extended intos/outros do a great job of setting the stage for what's to come, while letting each track speak for itself. It was a strong and deliberate choice not to include song transitions and the album is better for it.

In summary, these songs aren't working to support the album, but the album is working to support these song, which desperately needed a home. On TS2, I think we'll be seeing a far more coherent vision. I can't wait. :D :D :D

Sometimes the record feels a little kitchen sinky but I tend toward feeling the cohesion. I especially feel that way since all of these songs were written and mostly fleshed out together BEFORE the circumstance of remote recording came into play (though that of course still has an impact on the final product and the types of songs they recorded -- we likely would have had a slightly different track list but still two albums worth of songs.

damn that would be fuckin sweet!

24-min Defeat, 10-min Magicians and Genies, nice 44 minute album right there

that's prob a 30+ minute EP too. ... not bad, not bad

i can't personally separate kings and stride from the group. they work too well with those 3 songs

100%!! I'd also add Soul Capturer in there. I really think most of the material goes together.

If we are looking at an LP+EP situation, I'd release an EP with Defeat followed by Magicians. All the other stuff goes together SO WELL.

I think it could work on an EP if it was like the lead track/single. It edges out the also great Gem by a decent bit, Blast version is fantastic.

I don't hate the idea of Skiffs 2 being like JUST Magicians, Genie's and Defeat. There'd be something pure about that and new and weird for them, like they've shied away from albums tracks that are more than 5/6 min for about 15 years.

Easy to sprinkle in Kings or even Stride but then you run into it starting to get kinda long.

Side A Magicians/Genies/Kings

Side B Defeat?

that's a freakin beast.

Gem and Stride and Broke all sounds like actual Time Skiffs tracks to me still. So yeah, I think an EP could be perfect for them instead of like actually doing a Skiffs 2.

Either way, imagine the crazy Music Box homage mixes we can make with the actual soundboard release of half the show + the inevitable other half once Skiffs 2 drops + Prester mixed w/ Path, R&D and the inevitable Magicians/Defeat (...and PB Hearts solo studio release!?)

Think I have an aversion to the “epic 3-track TS2” because I’m worried that the record, though album length, wouldn’t feel album-like in scope. Bridge To Quiet is 35 minutes, longer than a lot of albums I regularly listen to, but when the final track has ended it very much feels like an EP rather than a full album. It feels small. Which is fine! But for me, part of the joy of getting a new AnCo record is getting this WHOLE NEW world to explore. 9 or/10 tracks to really sink my teeth into. Now I haven’t listened to the bootlegs of Magicians/Defeat/Genies, so feel free to tell me that I’m completely wrong here, but do they all have the depth of 3 or 4 songs within them.

Does this make sense to anyone or am I insane?

Magicians is pretty much 2-3 songs.
Defeat is 3 songs.
Genies is 2 songs.

So that’s around 7-8 songs worth!

Crazy to think recorded version of these songs exist right now. Defeat exists. Bostrom's black ball is out there in the ether, waiting to be unleashed

Side D is slowly becoming one of my favorites (though it might just be because I've completely worn out sides B and C at this point... For now anyway). For a while I wanted We Go Back to have been replaced by Gem and I, but now I realize WGB is the high-energy backside number the record needs. That chorus is utterly insane, I discover new things every listen

I’d love the next LP to be somewhere in the ballpark of:

1. Magicians in Baltimore
2. Gem & I
3. Tri Kid
4. [new song]
5. Stride Right
6. Broke Zodiac
7. Kings Walk
8. A Spider Bit My Lady
9. Defeat
10. Genie’s Open

Though I prefer Broke, Gem & I seems too thematically linked to be left off an LP next to something like Defeat. I really hope they keep Broke on the LP though, I need that emotional punch in the same listen-through with Magicians.

I do think Genie is going to be shorter than we think. Maybe around 6 minutes.

How the fuck do they manage to get their instruments to sound so spectral, and wispy. Passerby is so sweet. The rising synth bits in the panda part. The ending, Thank u passerby, is so eucalyptus - cows era Avey too. I love it. Really starting to warm up to the new lyrics.

with deakin saying the batch of songs for this era was 18, and avey saying they recorded 9 in december after doing 9 for time skiffs, avey's 26 must be different looser criteria i'm guessing, maybe there were some other songs they brought to the table in 2019 that got scrapped or maybe he's including the rest of the music box songs. i think panda said he brought 30 songs to the rest of the band and the other guys chose gem and i and broke zodiac from the bunch! crazy to think about all the material
