They cannot relegate Magicians to an EP.

You're spot on dio - Magicians and Defeat are the twin pillars of Skiffs 2. Having these two on the album will define the whole feel of Skiffs 2.

Agreed. If DownDownDownDown wasn't gonna follow Defeat, then Magicians sure as heck should.

is it just me or does ALL music sound better when there's new AC? they've got this special kind of magic that makes me appreciate all the details not just in their own stuff but in all the other music I listen to too. they completely reinvigorate the act of listening

I very much agree and appreciate you putting that feeling into words because that's exactly what I try to tell people why I love this band so much. Their music makes me so happy that music exists in general!

I've noticed that when AC makes an album, whether it's received well or not, when it comes to my own songwriting I feel so much freer. It's like their new songs give me permission to write whatever I want because they're so fearless in their creative choices and still find success.

They go wherever their hearts and souls tell them too, rarely influenced by what listeners want. It’s definitely a refresh when new stuff comes out.

He cut his finger :(

Noah will definitely write a song for his next solo record about almost losing his finger and it will be a banger.

Paul Westerberg put a screwdriver through his hand a decade back (trying to get wax out of a candleholder or something) and had to totally relearn how to play the guitar. Oof.

On a side note I absolutely adore Westerberg. My father would play all his stuff growing up so it serves as a bit of a soundtrack to my upbringing.

Hell yeah. I haven’t met too many AC heads into Paul and ‘Mats. I remember Avey put “Within Your Reach” on a mix back in the day—I melted. What’s your favorite PW record?

When I first read that I thought you meant that Avey did a cover of it and I was going to need to know where I could hear it.

Since nobody was talking to me, I'm a longtime replacements fan and I got to see them once and Paul a couple times. But I'm old.

Had a moment with the dubby breakdown/ending of We Go Back today. The endings of these songs (DS, WGB, SWE, Cherokee) are so great.

I have a soft spot for Stereo/Mono. So many of those songs are great even with how simple they can be at times. The melodies always stuck with me. How about you?

Yeah, totally. Such a weird thing, maybe our brains are more focused on sound or something since we're trying to make sense of the new album. I've been having a blast listening to old AC favorites in between full listens of Time Skiffs and its been super refreshing. Like the old stuff sounds new again.

Is that one sample at the beginning of Prester the same sample from Deakin's Seed Song?

I kinda feel like the samples in Prester are what Geo was describing of shooting a refridrator with his friend and he heavily distorted. It is the only song that I feel makes sense for those to be in with those mechanical sounding samples.

Oh shit, yeah that's gotta be the fridge sample. Surprised I didn't think of that.

In other news, still deeply in love with Cherokee. May have surpassed Royal and Desire for my favorite track on here.

Inspired by a comment from ingenue earlier in the thread -- songs as parts of the album art (front and back)

Dragon Slayer is the old-timey whalers
Car Keys is the encyclopedia of witchcraft and demonology
Prester John is the hooded skiffs figures
Strung is the lil pink "I love you this much" dude
Walker is the little dummer boys
Cherokee is the us flag pin
Passer-by is the lil guy in the window in the bottom left corner of the back
We go Back is the watch with the human face grafted onto a cartoon
Royal and Desire is the constellation fabric

Same. I love Folker too. “23 Years Ago.” Tim is probably my favorite Replacements record—“Hold My Life,” “Swinging Party,” “Here Comes a Regular.” Dayum. The reworked Dead Man’s Pop box that came out a couple years ago is really something too. Long live the ‘Mats! (Sorry, don’t mean to derail the Time Skiffs talk.)

I know myself and a couple others have been putting down a lot of bad journalism around AC. But I stumbled upon this piece written by Simon Reynolds for Wire magazine from 2005 (right before Feels was recorded) that was a joy to read.

Loved this part especially.

Standout track “Visting Friends”, says Portner, was influenced by Kompakt’s Pop Ambient compilations and Mike Ink’s project Gas. “Just like a wall of hums. We wanted that feeling, but with acoustic guitars.”

And she was, like, ‘Well, you know, what you need to do, you need to just breathe. Most people on earth don’t take in enough of the oxygen that their mind and body needs.’ I started doing these breathing exercises with her, and it makes your body feel crazy, it just goes through your whole body. She started doing it with Noah, too. It totally cleared everything up, gave everything this calm.”

For sure, I recently have been going thru those Pop Ambient comps and they don't disappoint. Really great tracks with lots of life. You can totally here the influence on Visiting Friends.

And breathing exercises and meditation saved my life from constant anxiety attacks like 10 years ago. Threw the doctor's meds away right after I found out I could get through it with my mind.
Thank you India!

Just saw an ad/review for time skiffs on a projector screen in a Metrostation. I've never seen any good music on these advertisements so I was quite surprised. They usually show the LP cover and 2 or 3 short sentences. My train just arrived at the station so I couldn't read it all, but they fucked up the name and labeled the album as "Tie Skiffs", lol.
