Jan '23 would be great IF we can get a fall EP. Fall Be Kind 2

if it is early 2023, i guess at least that would mean we'd get a single or 2 by the end of this year fingers crossed

I prefer Defeat as ending of a full LP then some weird one-off/EP thing.

If its actually 10, then do a 5 track EP, painters style this fall, and a 5 track (but still long as hell via Defeat and Magicians) LP in January. boom.

And even if they're approach/production is pretty different than Skiffs, they already did a 9-track LP of songs from this era, so do a smaller amount of longer tracks on a LP (with even bigger transitions/fades than Skiffs 1)

I still could never get if the Panda tracks (Broke and Gem) would fit on an LP with Defeat. So put those on EP with maybe Soul Capturer and a new one, and do ...

1. Genies (opener!?)
2. Magicians
3. unknown/new track
4. unknown/new track
5. Defeat

(I've already made 5+ posts like this and will make 50 more before Skiffs 2)

I keep having White Light/White Heat in my head while thinking about TS2. That's the dream for me. Magicians and Defeat as the longer pieces mixed with a couple of short high energy songs and some experimental stuff. Don't overdo it.

E: start it off with a Slippi-type song, end it with Defeat :pp

they better put Defeat on the album! also it's great to get confirmation that they finished recording, I guess they are in post and still have to decide what will make the cut

anyway back to TS, I'm now officially elevating Passer-by to my god-tier. I still have a bit of demoitis on the ending (mostly because I would love to hear the original 2019 autotune ending with the lush studio treatment) but the studio version is just as good in its own more subtle way, plus you can still hear the wordless Avey moans behind Panda's vocal line and they still give me goosebumps

White Light/White Heat is exact what they should go for. It's either that or Shaking The Habitual, pick one (long af double or small amount of mostly long tracks.)

Also, I mean basically just Ark

I think a 3 track EP would be nice to get in the late summer/early fall if the LP were to drop next Feb. If they really did record all their songs then I don't see why not.

I've thought about it long and hard and have decided Strung is the best song. Loved hearing from Noah about how the back half came together naturally, it's the purest form of AC energy on the record imo

i agree

if they're most likely not going to cram all the songs onto one long album, then it's a certainty that an EP + LP situation is going to unfold, and there's no reason why that EP shouldn't come out this year...keep the momentum up and let AC bask in the spotlight a bit more...

the only downside is an early fall EP would probably mean a later winter/early spring LP, rather than a Jan/Feb LP if there's no EP beforehand.

just think... if they release an EP in say...September, then Domino most likely wouldn't want to announce a new album/drop a single until Jan, meaning the album would come out in March at the earliest

Kings, Broke Zodiac, Soul Capturer EP would be ideal for me

because it would get the 3 weakest songs off the LP i'm sorry!!!!!

Nah I’m gonna need Kings as the opener for TS2. Get goosebumps just thinking about it.

(though this should probably be saved for the other thread)

Noah will definitely write a song for his next solo record about almost losing his finger and it will be a banger.

I think the ending evokes the bittersweet feelings associated with this type of stuff. Just as it came it's gone. The joy of having experienced it and then the sadness that it's over.

This is exactly how the line delivery hits me. Of course, I do see how some people might disagree with that creative decision or agree with it in the abstract, but it just doesn't resonate with them in practice. I stand by Passer-by as one of the best (if not the best) songs on this album and hold out hope that it may be a grower for those who are lukewarm about it now.

Just to close the loop on this. I think the lyric is fine, and definitely serves as a resolution to the theme of the track. It's just mildly annoying to me that it's at the tail-end of one of the most epic moments in their discography. This is definitely my favorite track on the album (SWE a close second) and the end isn't going to change that - I just have to get used to it!

Things like this are why I generally stay away from the demos - if I had listened to the live performances a bunch before the album came out, what is a mild annoyance could've been a feeling that the track was "ruined".

Of course, that leaves me very confused when potential future tracklists are discussed...but I'll just stay on the sidelines for that

Paul Westerberg put a screwdriver through his hand a decade back (trying to get wax out of a candleholder or something) and had to totally relearn how to play the guitar. Oof.

Looking back on the "Ieak it Deak" days of yore I never would've imagined Deakin rising to become MVP and leading the entire band into unexplored sonic territory. I'm here for it.

On a side note I absolutely adore Westerberg. My father would play all his stuff growing up so it serves as a bit of a soundtrack to my upbringing.

RE: Skiffs 2 - an EP would be awesome between now and early next year but whatever happens, Magicians and Defeat NEED to be on the album. EP placement just won't do them justice. These two songs ARE Skiffs 2 for me.

RE: Passer-by - I see the ending a a resolution. It's the 'better to have loved and lost' section. We have all these relationships pass through our lives and we need to be at peace with that. every relationship ends and every relationship taught us something.

Noah mentioned that he wrote the lyrics to his part of Prester in an attempt to describe the feeling of sadness he felt after reading a recent climate report. I remember thinking ever since I heard PJ from the 2019 meow wolf boot that it felt like it was about climate change, just this bittersweet plea to appreciate our lives and take steps toward a better path during uncertain times. This combined with Dave's part about the concept of Prester John, a benevolent and charitable leader, being a long lost myth today works well, if not quite bleak.

Magicians from Baltimore
New Track
Soul Capturer
New Track or perhaps a live cut

I keep picturing Magicians and Defeat as these huge twin pillars of an entire LP, but I guessss I could come around to idea of Magicians as a super single/EP like Crosswords/Mr. Noah

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

They cannot relegate Magicians to an EP.

You're spot on dio - Magicians and Defeat are the twin pillars of Skiffs 2. Having these two on the album will define the whole feel of Skiffs 2.

I'm just suddenly having this feeling that Magicians in particular will not land on the LP (even though obviously it should). Defeat is a lock. I'm becoming less sure on Magicians, can't place why.

not giving Hamburger Dipshit the view -- but as with p4k i understand wanting him to give them praise -- i want more people to hear their new stuff and he's certainly somebody who will convince people to do that

Hell yeah. I haven’t met too many AC heads into Paul and ‘Mats. I remember Avey put “Within Your Reach” on a mix back in the day—I melted. What’s your favorite PW record?

I'd rather have a shorter waiting period for skiffs 2 and then an EP with whatever is left than the other way around. Magicians and Defeat have to be on the LP, there's no way around it.

Hell yes. I'm on team Side E being Stride/Genie's

Also, Time Skiffs is definitely my favorite AC LP. I think so far it contains everything I've sort of wanted in this band, as well as many sort of cues from my other favorite ie. XTC by focusing on super tight rhythm sections and being really cymbal heavy-- also the really mature, introspective, and imaginative lyrics. Sort of a perfect gift at the perfect time. I understand the love people have for MPP and SJ and Feels (obviously I have it too) but Skiffs really pulled something a notch up for me. Also as others have said, it really puts into context how much PW and CHz are clearly on the same par to many of us as the stuff before it.

Saying that, besides Dragon Slayer, Cherokee and DDD, my favorites of the boots were Magicians, Gem and I, Genie's, and Stride Rite, so I'm ready to have my life even further changed very soon. I copped another ticket to see them in NJ just because I know I need to see them twice, anything to let these guys know they deserve even more than I or any fan could provide, lol.

i want someone to ask Noah why he only plays drums and sings on Time Skiffs, even on the songs he brought to the band, and how that process kind of works as a band -- because surely he had musical input in all aspects of the songs, but i wonder how that feels for him to be hands-off for the actual recording of the songs
