New interview with Brian and Josh, they talk about the new album for a little bit at 7:35 https://youtu.be/V0b9EGeooiU
Basically they're almost done with the next album, but decided that there were a few songs they didn't want to attempt recording until they could all be in a room together. Very curious which ones they are...
Thats great news. I was worried some of them would sound too sterile if they did it remote
Defeat in particular i imagine would be difficult to do that way

Aw that's great news! They haven't been here for over 10 years and I've stopped listening to bootlegs so it's all gonna be pretty new to me. It will be great to hear the difference in sound between the upcoming album of remotely produced songs and the subsequent EP or album of in-person stuff.

Strong feeling Defeat is one of the songs

I’m so curious as to what these songs will sound like having been recorded this way. Deakin seems pretty proud of how they turned out based on the way he was speaking about the album so that was reassuring. Luckily there was a ton of great new material so even though they saved some of it for later they’d still have a lot to work with

So they won't finish the record until they can get together to record some of the songs? Must still be a ways off so. Sounds like they've nailed what they've done so far, which is good

Probably Defeat, Kings, maybe downdowndown and bolder? Everything else sounds like it could be done with a click remotely

Oh I didn't even think about Bolder, yeah that part at the end definitely feels like it would need to be in person. Really hoping they can do Down down down remotely, feels like it would be the perfect slow song to balance out an LP. Waiting longer for Defeat would suck but also I was already half expecting that it wouldn't be on the album anyway since it's so long. Also they could be referring to some of the stuff from the music box set, Spider bit my Lady definitely couldn't be played to a click.
I really need to stop thinking about this stuff, if they're only almost done now then we probably won't hear any of it til like late summer..

No, I'm fairly certain what they're saying is they now have an album worth of music that they're putting the final touches on, and there's also a few compositions that they initially planned to include on the album that they will record and release separately instead. Like with Prospect Hummer or whatever.
I think what they're struggling with at the moment is just the final mixing process taking much longer than it usually does because of being apart

You are correct Hashish.
Obviously with so much material they were gonna inevitably release an EP at some stage too. What's interesting is the track listings have now been affected by the limitations of the pandemic rather than via any organic sort of process. I'm cautiously optimistic about this news

Every single professional review of this album will start with either "the band recorded this album separately, and you can definitely tell" or "the band recorded this album separately, but you can't really tell"
They should give it to Sandro Perri (Sandro Perri rules).
At least Panda likes at least Sky Histoire, which is one of my all time favourites.
Although most of the work is probably done already.
This album is one of my all time favorite, incredible
Just heard this for the first time. Really great!! Really puts me in a happy stoned in a theme park/circus mood. Thanks for sharing svilla!

Regardless of how it turns out, I think you're gonna be spot on with this prediction

im imagining prospect hummer being about recording this album during the pandemic and now im done that sure was fun!
Was super high listening to Cherokee last night. Struck by how goofy the lyrics are but also how good the song is, sounds like older AC in a weird way. If they capitalize on how sparse the production is and actually make the leads sound as huge as they do live, this could be a really really trippy and experimental album for them- I actually forgot how AC used to blow me away in terms of the creation of new production style (excepting buoys, which was an insane innovation). Would love for them to form a new style with this album that is actually cool in its originality (Chz and pw were original in a certain way but I doubt that they moved any artists in terms of inspiration the way they did in the 2000s [now that I think about it I don’t actually know any artists that were obviously inspired by any of their sounds]). Either way I want them to make me respect their abstract artistry again instead of just their songwriting
Petty spoiler

I think they definitely brought the buoys ethos into this material but whether or not it remains through to the final product is another question. Hope it does. They're always reinventing their sound but you're right in saying last decade their releases weren't as innovative. Most of the releases could be described as sounding like x and y previous release with a sprinkling of z. This is with the exception of buoys, which sounded really really out there for them.

I'm hoping for some crispy panda bear vox similar to what we heard on his Angel Du$t remix and Dean Blunt's album. Love hearing it up close like that.

Maybe that's just because those first releases had less to compare too and yet still you can see connections between consecutive releases in the early days. Here comes the Indian sounds feral like spirit and sweet like campfire songs, etc. I certainly don't think they have become any less innovative, just look at how many people complained that painting with was too different for them.

They have remained innovative but I think less creatively so- afaik Chz production was just them purposely making the opposite sonic palette of mpp, and pw was just them running with a zany plasticy synth sound on every track. I love those albums for their goofiness but I’m a sucker for “cool” things so I want them to make more seriously produced stuff that has more “cool” and down to earth dreaminess. Bridge to quiet was close but still had remnants of zaniness and was mixed as if to sound like a piece of laminated paper. Also should’ve mentioned day with the homies as another example of great recent production from them

100% correct
So what songs do we think are gonna get cut from the record? I'm guessing Downdowndown, Defeat, and Kings won't make it since those are the more "abstract" jams that would be harder to put together remotely

Yeah pretty much those and some of the music box stuff if we are to assume it was in consideration

i think DownDownDownDown can still make it but i am thinking it'll be Defeat, Kings, and just about all the Music Box stuff outside of Prester John that makes it to possibly a subsequent LP or an EP
it's mostly that Panda vocal looped with Avey singing over it. minimal interplay between the different parts
maybe that's just wishful thinking though because I think Kings is one of the most interesting of the new songs, would be so sad to see it get left behind

lol if DownDownDownDown isn't on the album what's the point, it's one of the best new songs. i hope they somehow figure out how to make the new Panda songs fit
down
cherokee
weapon
dragon slayer
stride right
gem and i
dragon slayer
strangers
defeat
appreciate
i want appreciate as the closer,,, "i'll see you out, there" is such a cute and nice way to end the album after defeat blasts you

I also kinda thought appreciate could be a cute little outro after getting blasted by defeat.
However, based on the fact that some songs won’t be making it until later, I’m hoping for something like this:
Down
Cherokee
Gem and I
Stride Right
24
Dragon Slayer
Prester John
Strangers
Passerby
Appreciate?
New track ? Idk which of these would work as a closer

I'm so used to hearing DownDown directly after Defeat that now it sounds like the two belong together.

Stride Right
Appreciate
Cherokee

Larry Fitzmaurice interviewed Noah for his music newsletter a couple days ago. At one point he says:
"Being home all year, I’ve been able to take on way more stuff than usual. I did a bunch of collaborations, mostly vocal stuff. We’re nearly done with a new Animal Collective record, and I’ve been making stuff with Pete. "

Kinda nuts how short a lot of these songs are. And without Defeat I could see there being 12 tracks on the LP

Will AI ever one day be able to remove the background chatter from bootlegs? The swells in Stride Right hit so nice but I can only hear that the song is indeed a waltz so many times. Get some Fourier transforms to smooth this stuff without needing an audio engineer

Seeing Noah say "We're nearly done with a new Animal Collective record" really makes me feel good. This has to mean we're due for a single and formal announcement within the next month or so.

Yeah their last few releases had a ridiculously long wait between album completion and release. CHZ finished recording in Feb/March, wasn't announced till July or something?
PW also had that insta post from the studio they recorded it at in the summer of 2015, which was like the last we heard about it till the airport freebirds in November

yeah but they are definitely done with the recording phase and are currently mixing/mastering, so it could be sooner than several months. but they also said those final tweaks are taking much longer due to them all being remote so who knows
