lol, i do agree about the name being shit. i like the hook; kind of agree with your sentiment about the hook, but i'm not sure that it's bad. for me, anyway. i just think it's a nice mellow song. i like the atmosphere of it very much, especially when they do the extended intro live.

Seems like a weird criticism that is insanely personal. I don't hear that at all. When I listen to the song, I imagine Avey reflecting on the road about his friend who was struck by lightning.

Yeah, its like you're trying really hard to hate it or something, so your reasoning sounds forced.

i think the title is really cool. the personification of time as an all knowing grandfather-style person is to me a really cool idea, and his reference to that personification in "he's got real big hands, and bigger plans" makes me feel good. who doesn't like a good mythical creature?

I love the album and actually think at least Moonjock is one of their best songs, and maybe even some others on the album but it's all around pretty straightforward, it sounds like exactly what they wanted it to sound like. Even non CHZ fans can admit Moonjock and New Town Burnout are pretty great...?

And actually now that I think about it my personal favorite on the album is Applesauce, it's actually seriously good in my opinion!

Ok, so I've read through this entire thread and I'd like to say thank you to everyone in it, because this thread has rekindled my love for CHz. Stanshant has entertained me to no end with his violent outbursts.
I've been thinking about the negativity that surrounds this album and I've come up with a couple of reasons people might not like it.
1, the production (obviously). aside from how busy it is, a lot of the album I feel simply doesn't sound like animal collective's style. I can't put my finger on what it is, but I feel the same way to a certain extent about MPP (Ben allen, anyone?).
2. Songwriting. I don't feel there's anything really wrong with the songwriting, but there's not a lot of variation. TS, Rosie Oh, Applesauce, Father Time, Mercury Man and Pulleys all sounded pretty similar to me when I first started listening, and now that I'm familiar with the album they're all pretty distinct but sometimes the music still feels like a never ending swirl of orange-tinted guitar tones and avey's woody timbre. Plus, there's no slow jams! every anco album before CHz has had at least one or two slow jams, but this feels like it can't sit still
3. The artwork. I like it, I get that it's super layered and represents the music pretty well, but damn is it fuck ugly. It colours the music too, it's claustrophobic and like I said earlier: orange tinted.
Other than those things, I'm pretty happy with this album. only songs I don't really like are TS (feels a little forced or long winded or something to me) and mercury man (I think it's kind of just repeating what applesauce and TS already did on the album (although that string quartet cover was amazing)). I never really got the hate on Wide Eyed, it's always been one of my favourites. Praise the Deak. Monkey Riches was the first anco song I ever heard so it's got a special place in my heart. Moonjock is probably the best song on the album.
Thanks for reading!

Very well put roopn. Your post made me realize some of my deep-seated C Hz prejudices that I didn't know I had.
I think taken with the album as a whole those qualities you mentioned are pretty superficial, and it's easy to look past them...C Hz is just a very different Animal Collective album, even for a band whose records all sound different.

Watching Tivoli 2012 tonight and this live era finally makes sense to me. Why does it always take me at least 2 years to truly appreciate the weirdness of what they're doing?! Almost as if I stick with band because I know each new record brings on a sound that I will eventually grow to understand and love. Always ahead of their time. Like they're living in the future and we're all catching up. Except that one dude in the front row. He gets it. He's already there. Plus this reminds me of the ATL show (except they opened with Also Frightened...and I wanted Rosie Oh ).
So cool to see them all playing instruments as well. Not that I don't like the samplers. Would love to hear more music with a similar setup but alternate sounds.

I'm catching up on the live vids for CHz. no one ever talks about the visuals for their tour. They're really good, did Danny Perez do them? they fit the vibe very well
I can only imagine how much work went into them and now we don't talk about them
edit: also, I know this discussion is for a long time agooo, but Gotham is incredible. def up there with New Town Burnout for me. plus it is odd to hear these songs that have a different production from the record

IIRC it was Abby that did a lot (if not all of them). You can see a lot of the elements that were projected live in various forms during the Centipede streams at: http://radio.myanimalhome.net/
When the album first streamed online, the visuals were discussed quite a bit I believe.

oh that's sweet, I didn't know they still had that site up! I saw the first stream of CHz on that site. but the visuals for the tour are quite a bit different. pretty cool if Abby did them but they remind me of Perez's recent Panda stuff kinda
I'm watching this video, and it's awesome!

unfortunately there never were any soundboard boots for the 2011 shows (which sucks because they're really good)
i usually listen to the pitchfork festival boot or petaluma, both are decent quality and together have all the songs from 2011

does anyone have a recommendation for a more permanent place to store the CHz radio transmissions?
I have all four with tracklists and cover art. only problem I can see is that geologist's set is in .m4a where the rest are .mp3.
i know people were interested in the past but I can't even find the posts now.
also just noticed dbpoweramp shows geologist's mix at 64kbps
