awesome post, foxtrot

Magicians sky-rocketed up my charts as my favorite song of this era. each part feels like a distinct block that both stands up on its own but also greatly improves the wonder and majesty of the others around them. taken as a whole, it's just a masterclass in song-design and craftsmanship. the recorded version of this song will likely be in my top 5 AC songs of all-time. i think they'll nail it in the studio.
i'm waiting on someone to make an ad-hoc version of Skiffs 2 using these Blast Radio recordings... it'll likely hold me over until the studio version drops...Josh just reinforcing the idea that we must embrace change and allow for the process to do what it will with each of these songs.......

Got next page'd. Argh!
I reckon I might do a Skiffs 2 mock up using the Blast recordings. People seem to be enjoying the TS one. I've spun that a bunch of times myself and loved it.
I agree about Magicians. Really making its way to the top for me too. This newest version just felt so tight and cohesive.

The jam of the first 2 Defeat chords at the end of this broadcast is honestly transcendent, feel like I'll be returning to it a lot. I might have misheard, but didn't Josh say that was from the first day of their 2021 rehearsals? So technically that jam was one of the first things they did after not playing music together in the same room for over a year. Just beautiful.

Have finally got a chance to start this. Been so excited for this all day.
Many thoughts:
So pleasing to hear Josh say that they all love Defeat as much as we do. Makes me very confident it’ll get the treatment it deserves.
KINGS WALK! Such clarity! The boy’s voices are sounding tip top here. A couple of live versions have been a little pitchy but this is so satisfying and spot on. The studio version of this will be sublime. Interesting that Josh said that Dave wrote all the parts because there are Noah parts that sound so much like they were written by him. Maybe Dave was writing with Noah and Josh’s voices/styles in mind?
DEFEAT.
Fuck me. This will clearly go down as one of their greatest ever. It already is. The intro here (with the harpsichord?) is gorgeous. That intro could comfortably go another couple of minutes on its own. Dave’s melody weaves so beautifully in and out of the harpsichord and synths. Love Noah’s bass drum hits too. Makes it feel like the song is gathering momentum from the very start. That first chorus sent goosebumps up my spine. Even with the mics peaking. I’m just so overwhelmed by the majesty of this song. The ‘earth is quiet’ line is possibly Dave’s most precious and beautiful lyric ever. If this song was just the first section, it’d still be among their best ever. Was Dave always going down so low in the chorus previously? Feels like a slightly new version of his chorus part. The transition into the middle section is so much more EPIC now!! The building, walking bass notes, the drums building and those sparkling synths… holy shit. HAVE MY BABIES AC! This section is so much more funky now. It has this real groove to it! Wish the recording was a bit clearer but man this is amazing. Its no longer renaissance fair. Its now this carnival space jam! Like a big top being caught by the wind and swept up into the stratosphere. The 3rd section is so much more textural and intense here. Drums skittering and spluttering, Brian adding lots of tension, bass hitting hard. This whole song has been given such a rich reworking. All the best elements retained and so many new elements fleshing it out. The final stretch is so all consuming. The way Dave and Noah just soar off each other then collapse into the final ‘isn’t it now’ part is like all the best ‘AC melting into the pavement’ parts (Daffy Duck etc.) just turned up to maximum emotional impact. That sighing/crying (guitar?) sound at the very end has even more weight here too. This song. This fucking song. It basically has everything the band have ever done well inside it.
MAGICIANS! Love the way the bells ring around after Panda’s crash in this first section. Chorus hits hard in this version! As too does the transition into the second half. Noah’s drums sound huge. Dave seems full of energy here, on the cusp of chucking in a scream. This song is growing on me more and more. Absolutely love the way the different sections flow here. Feels more unified than ever. They’ve really tightened up this track. Magnificent stuff.
Listening to these three (Kings, Defeat and this) back-to-back makes me realise that they really deserve an album to themselves. Sticking stuff like Gem & I and Broke in amongst these behemoths will just dwarf them. These three would make an absolute stone cold 5 star classic 38 minute-ish album.
Deak chat:
Lol’d when he said ‘Avey and Jolliest’.
Loved hearing him talk about how songs evolve and grow. Them sharing songs before recording like they do is obviously a big part of them enjoying the process of evolution. Keeping it fresh and novel. One of the reasons I love this band so much.
Also awesome to hear him chat about the parents and being faced with months of quarantine so that they could record together. Can totally relate.
Is going to be very interesting to hear the rest of TS considering the remote recording. Prester still feels really organic and ‘band in a room’ to me so feel like they’ve done really well with it so far.
Crazy to hear him open up about MPP and where he was at. Really appreciate the honesty and vulnerability shown here. Shows his incredible maturity and strength.
End bits and pieces were a nice way to finish. Defeat piano demo snippet was awesome. Would love to hear the full thing. The Defeat ambient jam was fantastic! Real Indian classical meets interstellar vibe. Loved it. Looks like Josh might be composing on piano for his next batch of songs? A piano based Deakin album would be pretty rad.
Whole broadcast was a joy. Especially Defeat. I got to the end and went straight back and listened to that again. Sorry about the lengthy blabber.
yo
let's next page this, respect
please do a TS2 mock up, foxtrot, thanks in advance

I had to turn it off during Kings because I woke up my wife, she said she thought she's having a nightmare. Back to sleep for a couple of hours then I'll blast it on the way to work. Can't wait, which is why I'm still awake

Thank you, deakin! This broadcast series really brightened up the last month! Really interesting Q&A, I was expecting that there were a few a additional songs in the pipeline for time skiffs that didn't make the cut and gem & I and broke zodiac would have perfectly gelled with the vibe of the other tracks on skiffs. But it is for sure the right decision to really nail them in the studio rather than releasing versions that are 'just fine'.
I can't help it but I have to put my wishlist for additional releases out:
post-skiffs EP in late summer 2022
Gem & I
Tri Kid or new song
Broke Zodiac
Stride Rite
Non-LP single in winter 2022/2023:
Soul Capturer
Kings Walk
Single LP ala close to the edge in early 2023:
Defeat
Magicians
Genies Open

Would be kind of cool to hear the skiffs versions of Broke and Gem & I after we get the "proper" versions on the next LP, fits very well into the classic rock vibes of this era with a lost album kind of thing.

I second this, I don’t have the capability to rip it but would be forever grateful for a rip and split

nah, the link a few pages back is the youtube link.
it's undeniable that the growth of streaming services has made broad listening easier, but man, i miss the days where we were all fighting to make high quality, properly tagged mp3s/flacs.
anyhoo, since hunks isn't posting at the moment i'm going to record the stream and split it up.

Love how the broadcasts have so much noise in the mix like Ark and hollinndagain, I wish all of their music was still at least processed through a crummy DAT at the final stage. Imagine MPP compressed via tape and recorded lossless from there. Might be cool Idk. I’ve just always felt like that level of clarity suits the murky dreamworld their best stuff seems to come from. Better quality makes it more like a “pointing at”, rather than a “coming from” (unless the high quality mix hits that goldilox zone of course, then it’s pure magic)

I'd draw a similar parallel to the different ways film and video formats can alter the feeling of a piece. Things shot on VHS or 8mm film are "technically" worse but also valuable and powerful tools that can transport viewers in ways pristine 4K or digitally-shot stuff cannot.
