Bought the translucent red vinyl from my record store today -- played it twice tonight.
definitely a speakers album as others have said... those were my favorite listens yet. started playing it at 33RPM by mistake....
by the looks of it, Geologist is playing a lot more instruments than usual? or maybe i've always been ignorant to how many instruments he actually plays. didn't expect to see him playing lap steel guitar.
i gotta listen more closely to hear the banjo on "Cherokee"

Yes I keep forgetting its 45rpm too and the intro to passerby sounds insane at 33, that sub bass is even lower

i honestly don't see any way that they don't end up doing that sooner or later, esp now that they're entering this era where they seem to be treating their legacy as a band with a sort of reverence they've generally refrained from previously

Came here to post this. The lyrics really made this one click for me and turned what I thought was a chaotic mess into a really interesting piece of music. The vocal effects threw me off for a minute but I can respect what they were trying to convey. This album needed at least one song with that kind of energy. Personally, I think it would've fit better before or after Walker though. All of these songs have clicked in a big way for me. Perfect 5/7.
Edit:
Still not gonna top MPP, nor SJ. Best thing they've done in a long stretch though.

Listening to PW after this album is such a trip. It sounds good, almost better (as in more unique?) in some ways but also a lot is cast into relief, kinda badly with the retrospective comparison to Skiffs
Synths are often ugly (maybe in an interesting way?) drums feel a little canned, it often feels like they're playing or specifically singing a little too fast, and also kind of feels like they're like doing a bit. Like they're playing a character of some mutant-y vocally weird pop band.
Its sometimes cool... It works for me still on the 2nd half a lot better (On Delay, Bagels, Spilling, Summing and Golden esp) but the 1st half feels kinda rough, esp compared to the incredible stretch of singles on Skiffs.
Idk. That was such a weird era. I loved it at the time and still like PW but um ya. Feel like they're being more themselves on Skiffs in a way. Not like they're lyrically personal much on Skiffs but it feels like less of a bit. And less of a conceptual rule book, less strict parameters.
this is just more negatively comparing PW to Skiffs which is not new but like, eh. Its just weird to compare is all. And its weird that PW is what it sounds like when theyre in the same room together vs Skiffs

im so weird rn in that i.... DON'T want solo stuff lol. Like if it was some quick and dirty digital surprise drop or something, but they usually have to set a whole half a year aside away from band to do those cycles. Like... can they wait til after Skiffs 2 and THEN all drop solo triple albums...?
you're not weird rn. I seriously don't gaf about any solo/side projects at all atm. I just want all focus on TS2.

Okay finally got time to write down my thoughts. I tapped out just as Strung got released as a single (didn't want to hear too much of the album before it was released), so good to be back. FYI only boots I listened to were DS, PJ, and Passer-by (2019 versions), and I've only listened to the new album 4 times I think. So these thoughts are a bit premature haha, but whatever.
Overall the album is fantastic, as expected. Incredible incredible production, and yes this is a tired statement but it does feel like AC are returning "home" in some intangible way (even though I've loved their last decade of output).
DS is a bit disappointing - the bouncy verse melody got suppressed a bit for some reason, which sucks because it's like one of the most AC sounding, fun things ever. But I was never a fan of the DS chorus, which I feel got an upgrade.
Passer-by also doesn't hit as hard as it should, much like the Prester John chorus, but both new versions are brilliant in their own right so that's okay. In fact, Passer-by is the one I find in my head most of the time atm.
Cherokee and Strung are incredible fun and seem to be my favourite tracks. Royal and Desire up there too - it's so beautiful and I'm happy for Deakin given the anxieties he had several years ago about songmaking. Car Keys seems good but I'm yet to fully appreciate it yet. Walker still fun and surprisingly likable, but definitely more forgettable than the others. We Go Back seems fun as well but is somewhat Walker-tier for me right now, although perhaps I will warm to it.
This album is such a natural, likeable, easy going hit.

Back half of this album is unreal. Front half is fucking great. Strung feels a little long in the context of the album, I really really like it as a song, bouncy and then quite cathartic SJ style coda but I almost think the album flows better going from PJ to Wanker.

i can dig this.. heard some say strung should’ve been the opener, but nothing matches that energy, so i guess i can see the argument as the midpoint hype man of skiffs
also, indirectly calling a deceased legend who inspired noah
a wanker made me chuckle

Weird that Dragon Slayer might be my least favorite track on here, especially since it was a big favorite from the boots, plus their openers are usually always very strong. If I'm being honest, the 2019 meow wolf DS is still the best. The changes in the 2021 boots had me cautiously optimistic, but now that it's out it seems like a case of them just hearing a different song in there than I did. Which is fine obvs. Every other song did the live to studio transition exceptionally well.

Lol no way it’s mine but that’s such a sick bonus!!! I guarantee the live archive is still in the works. Some of the stuff popping up on nugs and bandcamp confirms they’re workshopping release strategies. From what I understand, they’ve been recording multi tracks for every live show since CHz and (evidenced by Crispy Pops and Ballet Slippers) it’s likely the house mixes from the MPP tour have been worked through.
It’s completely understandable that the band doesn’t allow any bootleggers to plug in to the board (anymore, if that used to happen for past shows). The band’s generosity to still allow fans to record so we can celebrate the current live era as it happens just solidifies how selfless and wonderful these guys are. The Grateful Dead of the modern era.
