Panda Bear on the Inspirations Behind Animal Collective’s ‘Time Skiffs’ (Billboard)
from the billboard interview on the lp2:
wrote:
Was there anything that just didn’t come together?
There’s another group of songs we saved for later – those were the songs we felt relied more on the performance dynamic. These were the songs we felt we could get going (remotely). A couple songs didn’t make it that ultimately we left off the record because we felt we didn’t totally nail. We’ll definitely get (those) done very soon. I don’t want to say when but there will definitely be recordings of those songs at some point.

Something about the “always passing” line Panda sings at the end of “Passer-by” that rubs me the wrong way. Lightens it up too much. Want it darker.

Um the sax thing is crazy. I don't how people don't know what some mean at all about there being at least a sax-sounding thing.
I honestly have thought its actual sax yet I do believe people saying its Avey autotune, but also like how do you know.
Anyway, idk who knows. It sure has the vibe of alike a Pink Floydian brass instrument and connects the song to Nola/Music Box for me in a very satisfying way.

I guess I just "know" it's not sax because you can make out words in it and it sounds akin to 2019 R&D

Billboard interview got me thinking:
If they recorded for 17 days in studio and there's only a "couple songs they didn't feel they nailed yet", does anyone else think panda is being vague not bringing up anything about that? Makes me wonder if it's supposed to be more of a surprise, and he was alluding to a couple of ep songs-- they clearly had more than a couple of songs left... what if we got a surprise drop.......? iron is sweaty hot ....

Yeah plus there's no way they would have sax without crediting whoever played it in the liner notes.

There's a similar thing on Slayer at the "slayer/soulstar" part that seems like a trumpet at first but sounds more like guitar warped to sound like trumpet

there's
words?!
I'm taking stuff around 2:45 and on for a bit. I mean it actually fr just sounds like sax to me. But like ya idk.
And then deeper notes around 4:00. I mean it sounds nothing like Avey's other autotune parts.

There's a sound in We Go Back (0:18) that sounds a LOT like reverbed sax but I would not be surprised if it was just a synth

Great to finally have the recorded versions of these songs. Much to admire here. I wished I liked the recorded version of Cherokee more, but at least we also have the boots. The last three tracks are so good! Probably my fav stretch of tunes on the album.

Listened three times last night and once again this morning. this album rules, and i'd say its recency bias but we've had this bitch for like 3 years now in one way or another so i'm prepared to call it. top three animal collective album. royal and desire a top five animal collective song.
stray thoughts:
animal corrective is hilarious
prester john was the perfect lead single no comment on the other choices
the next album is ts 2 they don't have a third album ready to rip after that that's silly talk
panda is hilarious
i am so fucking pumped for this tour

currently on my third listen, this time through my speakers with the vinyl. gotta say, everyone was right about this being a speaker album. gives the mix much more room to breathe. still great on headphones but even better loud as fuck through a decent hi-fi system

Passer-By is tricky cause I feel like the first half absolutely SLAPS and hits hard through speakers, but then the second half sounds better through headphones, you get to hear all those subtle details.

I think Deakin mentioned two songs they tried to record remotely for TS that didn't make it because they couldn't get them right, I bet that's what PB is talking about here. so those plus all the ones like Defeat and Magicians that they knew they couldn't do and didn't even try

I feel this. Not super into the song ending with “thank you passer by!” either. the rest of the song is too stormy and smoky, it feels wrong

avey already lightens it up with the lyrics and delivery of the "bumped a passerby" part

Ok! Finally listened to the whole album * Keep in my mind I abstained from hearing We Go Back until now:
Heres my rankings:
S tier: We Go Back, Strung with Everything, Royal and Desire
A tier: Dragon Slayer, Cherokee, Walker
B tier : Prester John, Passerby, Car Keys
We go back is so fun to listen to I think its a huge improvement over the live version, and its the one I had the most fun listening to. SWE is just a classic its amazing. Royal and Desire is a 9.5/10 its beautiful but I wish it had even more autotuned avey and I wish his Down Down Down's were louder but wow.. pandas harmonies in the middle..
Dragon Slayer is a good opener, and aveys voice is my favourite part. Cherokee is like an 8. The ending is epic. Need to re-listen. Walker I've heard too many times but the harmonies at the end make the song for me!
Prester John.. its ok, not my favourite but I appreciate the production and harmonies. Passerby needs to grow on me but I like how subtle it is, and Car Keys.. So far my favourite part is the outro, the rest hasn't clicked quite yet .
Overall on First LIsten, I think its a very Subtle, Well produced Album. Definetely better than Centipede Hz and maybe Painting WIth ( I liked painting with a lot yes). If I could give it a score it would be a solid 8. Again this is only first listen!

yeah i remember deakin mentioned on blast that gem and i was one of the songs that wasn't coming together remotely
i wonder if defeat was one of the ones they recorded in december or not. i could see them feeling like they had to get that one done, i could also see them wanting to save the best for last

Lennox: Originally I feel like we had about two records worth of stuff to choose from before the pandemic hit. And then with the pandemic, we kind of had to choose songs that we felt like we could pull off remotely. So a lot of the times it was the more like rhythmic ones, the ones that didn’t have a bunch of kind of like loose ambient passages that relied more on like the performative dynamic between us.
Weitz: It just suffers. It’s not even necessarily just ambient stuff, but some parts kind of rely on like eye contact or just like feel like when everyone’s gonna kick in —
Lennox: Yeah, everybody kind of goes together. There were two or three [songs] we felt like we didn’t totally get right that we left off and will be on some future thing. We’ll get it done eventually. But we whittled down the edit that we made.

I wonder what Elektron stuff Avey was using on this. Could definitely be more monomachine or octatrack (tho not sure if they would label that as a 'synthesizer'). In the Pitchfork livestream video he has a Digitakt on his table setup (noticed that while watching it recently and I was wondering how they integrated that in their setup, seems like that style sequencer would be tricky to fit into the more natural/fluid instrumentation of the Skiffs set up). As a huge gear nerd, I'm loving this press kit info

yeah i'm now left wondering if what they recorded in december was a companion EP rather than a full length follow up. does 17 days of recording seem too short for an album or too long for an ep or could it go either way?

idk about recording time to album length conversion, but from the blast sessions the jams seem long enough for another 45-50 minute record
