Wow, that Mercury cover really is great. Love how it keeps the vocal melody intact, while backing it up with an amazing string arrangement. Are there any more like this?

CHz sounds like a really weird, ugly bug and/or being drunk at chuck e. cheese on a tuesday.

I can totally hear the "drunk at chuck e. cheese on a tuesday" comparison, nice one rampface. Like a man sized, drunken cockroach.

I love the Chuck E Cheese comparison, that feels really accurate.
But Monkey Riches is just a big hangover for me anymore

witek that might be slightly hyperbolic but I agree that chz is very good!!

Hahahahaha
I meant to sound hyperbolic, cause i can't believe theres so much people disliking this album. We needed to equilibrate things round here.
I mean, sometimes i love Spirit, sometimes i prefer Fall Be Kind. But Centipede its always a mistery, always a challenge.
I love to hear Centiped Hz while i'm getting the train to my moms house. All that sound summing with everything i see, the people in, the city out. The cars dancing in the traffic, the movements that build up a city. The lines and forms in the houses, on the faces, in the parts of the train, in the girls sitting on the train. At the same time, i float on a blue river in space, guided to a thousand voices to lots of different fellings. Well, there's so much about the things i feel while hearing that...

i think that's extremely well put. i love the mystery and "challenge" of it too - and if someone says that's not what you're "supposed" to like about music, i say stop making yourself look so dumb.

the people looking at you thinking "ill have two of whatever he's on"
i think its funny how all u have to do to get the critics back to this thread is praise it and they come running like pigs to the trough

I don't mind people not liking this album, but putting other people down for liking it and praising it, is really petty.

I still really enjoy CHz. Some tracks(Monkey Riches, Rosie Oh) have worn thin and I don't enjoy them as much. Other tracks(Applesauce, Amanita) I wore myself out on...Still love them, but I don't listen to them as much as I once did. Here we are though, over a year and a half later, and tracks like TS, Moonjock, and especially Father Time, NTB and Mercury Man are some of my favorite AC songs...But just not in the traditional abstract psychedelic bizarreness I tend to think of when I think of AC a favorite AC song.
Great record, but I agree with others here that it's not quite as extraordinary as some of their earlier records.

i think i like chz the most because it seems like such a density of instrumental interplay and sampling, and i think of all their albums its sort of the jammiest, and their musicianship is maybe on display more here than anywhere else, like in a more technical sense, so in that way it kinda feels different than any of their other albums. to borrow a music critic term, it seem the most "muscular" ac lp. this is arguable of course

imagine hey light on the chz tour
pandas kick drum on all 4's n deakin/avey ferociously dronin that chord on their guitars/keyboard
n then pulleys-jam-like outro with heavily effected smooth instrumentation

i really love that song. it stuck with me so much from seeing them at mpp in 2011. like i yearned to hear it on the album, and i love the way it turned out. definitely don't understand all the dislike for it.

i mean, really, it comes in waves. a bunch of people will say they hate it, but then a bunch of people come and defend it. so maybe it's not the most hated track or anything, but i feel as though it receives a lot of unsolicited negativity on this board.

I think ppl disliked it initially in the same way lion or winter wonderland kinda threw ppl off, but now I think most ppl know the truth and see how good it is

I thought Father Time would def be a single it's one of the few "straight" less abrasive songs. Kinda wish they put crimson or Gotham on the album just so people now those songs exist their so good.
Always felt this album was more for diehard fans of AC like us. I think the band even stated that. The whole critic backlash was bullshit. Everyone read that pitchfork review and followed suit. Terrible.
Granted I was listening to the boots for a year before I heard the album.

Father Time is bad for several reasons, the worst of which is that awful 'LONG TIIIIIME AGO' hook, which is comfortably the worst, most naff, jingle-ass-sounding shithouse melody Dave has ever written. It makes me think of a local double glazing firm's fuck awful radio advert tune which was actually written by the founder of the company, a man with neither talent nor the self-awareness to realise it, but enough gumption and arrogance to convince himself he should be writing his company jingle because he's heard music before. Also the title is bad. I guess his current illness is the result of karma.

^baby that's ril dumb. that rilly is so dumb tho. smh.
I'm sure Avey is well aware of the herky-jerky sing-a-long, weirdo effect that the hook has, its part of why the song is great. it makes me think of some weird cover of a song from the Peter Pan musical or the like and the last place I'd expect something like that is a weird, cantina-band space jam... its great
