It always struck me as wild how instead of having a "synth" player, AC chose to play sound effects and field recordings to form a noise floor for the rest of the instruments. I mean, they brought the synths back out for MPP but there are so many crazy sounds on Feels and SJ that are just obscure samples
This was a huge draw for me back in the day, before I had my texture-sensor obliterated by all kinds of weird music I always thought AC had the “coolest sounds”

Congrats! What kind did you get?
Loch Raven was the one that sold me on my studio monitors.

Got a pair of V-Moda M200s
Was honestly a bit of a gamble cause I didn't try before I purchased, but I had been using their LP2s (their cheapest over ears) for years so I just had faith I'd like these, their entry into the studio monitor space. I'm sure more hardcore audio heads would find some issues cause it's a bit of a fashion-oriented brand, but I'm super pleased with them. Heaps of clarity and space compared to my LP2s
Gonna bump all of feels later, cheers headroom

Awesome, I'm excited for you! I have some Audio Technica headphones that have lasted me over 10 years and still sound great. I'm sure that pair you bought will be a good investment. I bet you'll find some cool details in Eucalyptus too. Boat Race!

I need to get some studio monitors. Any suggestions? I produce mainly techno/ambient and electronic music. Was thinking of getting something ~300 for the pair.

I've seen a lot of people get KRK Rokit 5's and that seems to be in that price range. You can scour craigslist and maybe find a deal. There's a lot of bass on those monitors from what I remember when I was listening to them at a friends house. I have Focal Alpha 50s and I love em.

I was thinking about the KRK Rokits. I guess really I just need to get out to some stores once things re-open and give some stuff a listen.

Re: General The Animal Collective Talk (...cont'd)
Love Avey's discussion about self-doubt - I think he mentioned similar things in a recent AMA. Also he mentions something funny like "some die-hard AC fans often question why a new song sounds different in the studio" and then explains that he's very in-the-moment so what inspired him back then may not inspire him at the time of recording. It's a very relevant point given all the talk about Midnight Special and the potential demoitis of Defeat. A reminder to let Avey do what he does best and respect any changes he makes to songs even through your disappointment.
FYI the only new album mention is that it is heavily jazz influenced, but we already suspected that.

Centipede Hertz (alt tracklisting). I've finally come up with a satisfying alternate tracklist and has everything from the era. Moonjock and TS seem to serve the album better in the core, pick up momentum
[Centipede Hz Hidden Video]
Applesauce
Wide Eyed
Father Time
Moonjock
Today's Supernatural
Rosie Oh
Gotham
New Town Burnout
Monkey Riches
Honeycomb
Mercury Man
Crimson
Pulleys
Amanita

Enjoy the Change and Avey's entire EP last year feels prophetically theophanic when listening in today's climate.
I remember experiencing a similar sensation when listening to Fall Be Kind for the first time. That record and its play-on-words epithet heralded a new era of angsty, fragmented music of the early- to mid-'10s. Sufjan Stevens' Age of Adz, Centipede Hz, Tomboy, Down There, Bibio's Mind Bokeh, St. Vincent's Strange Mercy––to name a few––really spoke to the quality of time back then.
I'm wondering now what other music will capture or signal this escalating moment? The word "defeat" has been my word of and for the year, and whaddya know? Listening to AC's Defeat finds so many striking parallels to life as a pandemic.
How do you understand time through music?

Interesting. Thx for sharing that. Music can be such a private adventure — it’s fun to see how other people “connect the dots.” What do you mean by “theophanic”? I’ve definitely had some divine moments with music, but maybe not in the context in which you’re hinting. There are particular records/songs that really mark out periods of my life, beginnings and endings. I can’t help but hear Talk Talk’s Laughing Stock, Lambchop’s Mr. M and John Martyn’s Bless the Weather when I think about the happiest years of my life, and of Beck’s “Country Down” when it all came apart; Michael Price’s “Easter” when I first tasted eternity in a mushroom; Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs on a certain winter night. As for the pandemic, I’ve listened to Ry Cooder’s “Houston In Two Seconds” about 800 times, LAKE’s “Tell Me What Is True Love” about 700 times and Hood’s “This Is What We Do to Sell Out(s)” about a million.

Long shot, but I recall seeing a clip of Avey recording vocals for Ramu on instragram somewhere awhile back. Wondering if anyone saved that?
