Noah: "If I'm honest, I'm a little surprised. I feel like this one's better than the last one and the reception to the last one seems to be better."
Josh: "I think all four of us, I mean I kinda can speak for Dave and Brian as well, This is one of my favorite things we've ever done." "there's something about the execution of this one and the sort of depth of spirit that feels even more where I think I would've wanted all of this to go, It feels like we hit it"

Feeling very vindicated now as a fan who thought Time Skiffs was fairly bland and lifeless and now considers IIN to be among their most vibrant and visual records yet. It's kind of strange to me that this album isn't getting the same kind of attention or praise. They also mention that they've been keeping up with message boards and that they feel like the fan reception is more aligned with their viewpoints (paraphrased), which is very cool to hear and I'm glad that they see the positive fan reception.

EDIT: Currently watching the q&a posted above
Deak: "It is kind of wild in some ways just how much comes down to how something is tracked and mixed. Like I wonder, not in a revisionist way, but like if the songs that we had done for Time Skiffs had been recorded this way, if they would have felt as different."
Same same

I wonder if they'd recorded all of the songs with Elevado they'd still have called it Isn't It Now? In some ways it seems like an inevitable title for any album that has Defeat on it

And yeah the band should feel proud of this album. It might be the best they've ever sounded from a production standpoint. You can feel the "spirit" of them together too like Deak said. A welcome addition to the upper elechon of their discography

Kinda wanna do a 'CA Covers Isn't It Now?' thread, but do we still have any hype for that kinda thing?
In any case, I made a weird, bad chiptune cover of Genie's as a start if that vibes with anyone.

Noah, from the F a n t a n o interview, on recording/releasing new music: “I can’t stop.”

It is good to be a fan of these boyz.

*nthony F*ntano is bad at both reviewing and interviewing. A lot of pigeonholing and asserting his own opinions and "asking" if they agree. Pitchfork mentioned an embarrassing amount of times. Can society move past the need to include this simpleton in anything music related?

yeah, I'm glad they're getting more attention through this but I'm halfway through it and it's embarrassingly criticbrained. it's neat to hear them talk in a "career retrospective" way but he shoehorns it into every other question somehow, gets grating after the first 10 minutes. haven't seen a video from him in years and figured it was just his fans that annoyed me but I guess not

man this album FUCKING RULES kings walk is the only song i'm not sold on but i'm sure i'll come around to it eventually. i'm liking genies open a lot considering i thought sea of light from the sung tongs tour was really boring, they really made the most out of it

also, ACAB is intoxicating and kinda reminds me of baby day in a way. the clapping and repetition and fade in makes me think it could function in a similar way as baby day did in the 03 tours. hopefully it gets played live when the band tours again in 300 years

Exactly what you guys said already - Melon just keeps regurgitating the same question. Who cares how some of the records were received after MPP? He doesn’t let it go and he’s already made up his mind and isn’t so much asking a question as much as just making a statement he hopes Josh and Noah agree to. We still got some good insight into things from Josh here and there because he was able to branch out past the critic/fan reception question over and over but there was very little of Melon trying to understand at all the creative processes and you’d think having Deakin right in front of you, you’d ask about Stride Right or his lyrics to any of his contributions. I got the feeling that AF really doesn’t care much about the actual music or lyrics of the Collective - I’d always had that feeling but this confirms it which doesn’t make for a fascinating forum. Again, there was some good stuff in there but it was mostly because the boys took the reins away probably because they were fucking bored as I would be. I feel like Joe Biden checks Pitchfork every time a record comes out and thinks “hm 6.4 this time. Another pass for me!”.

That rym interview was amazing. Josh is killing it in his openness and willingness to share info. Some highlights:

The other guys kinda didn’t love stride rite at first? He mentioned they were groaning because it was a piano ballad but he stuck it out and thinks they all are down with it now
IIN was almost 5 songs (including defeat) and an EP
Deak sings on Baby Day and HCTI (but he also thinks Dave wrote leaf house)
Defeat was too heavy to end the album on
Avey asked him to “please” play differently on SJ than Feels, he “didn’t want to sound like that again”. Deak didn’t know how at first
They were asked to cut the first 45 seconds of Prester John for a single edit but refused. Also refused to cut FRG or fireworks for Conan
Jeremy recommended working with Russell to them

Edit: to be clear, Deakin pointed out “some significant errors and misquotes”. Oof lol

Can casual fans of anco move past the need to include pitchfork in anything anco related?

The tired ass narrative that pitchfork contributed to anco's success is kinda backwards. Anco would have been just successful if pitchfork hadn't been tapped into them early on because they make undeniably good music. they're not the only publication that raved about them like that. If anything, anco contributed a lot to pitchfork's success. I know they were considered a notable publication prior to anco's "cultural moment" (I assume? I wasn't even a year old yet when sung tongs came out so I could very well be wrong), but it seems like more people to started to pay attention to pitchfork because they were into stuff like anco, not the other way around.

Joe Biden's questions were very zeitgeisty but that's his wheelhouse and I guess he, for better or worse, literally helps shape it so w/e

I couldn't get through it for this reason. His brain seems to work in a very fascinatingly stupid way and I'm just thankful it's not how I parse through music etc. I was watching one of his reviews years ago and was trying to put my finger on what I disliked about it/his method of critiquing things. It dawned on me that I would never, ever want to discuss music with that dude in real life. It's like soul sucking. and music is so amazing and easy to talk about it. it's very odd

Did anyone else get the sense that Josh was a little fired up in that interview? It seemed like maybe he was peeved at previous comments from TheNeedleDick about their past records and wanted to get some stuff off his chest, set things straight. Then there was a moment where he was like "I don't have an answer to that question, my brain doesn't think that way at all." Which made me lol

i'm super curious if side D would've been the 4-track EP

in my head i can't take any of those first 5 off the main IIN? album

edit -- actually maybe "Kings Walk" was always going to close the main album, only problem with that is spacing the tracks over vinyl -- having a 2xLP, 4 sides for 5 songs is excessive, but you can't fit the other 4 on one side so it was probably part of their conundrum

edit 2 -- maybe this

A Defeat (22 mins)
B Broke, Magicians, AtCAB, Kings (20 mins)

EP – SC, Gem, Stride, Genie’s (22.5 minute EP)

well ya, in the Q&A video also posted the other day Panda straight up says he hates thinking about their old work lol -- i think he was speaking for the whole band

and so basically Domino wanted them to take off the first 45 seconds and last 1:30 of Prester John

Idk I thought Tony’s interview was pretty good. Boys were kinda awkward but they are always like that in interviews. Got some interesting answers out of them. Suppose that’s the important thing.

It wasn't an exceptional interview at all but I don't see any reason to be upset about this one more than any other. I agree ross that there was some pretty insightful and interesting answers to be found. Deak also said the interview was thoughtful at the end of it, which was probably a formality, but to suggest he was like seething through the interview or something is pretty strange. I'm not a fan of the guy, but y'all mald pretty hard about this press stuff and I can't say I get it.

pains me a bit to know they were heavily considering a 5 song record incl. defeat but decided against it, i really do think that would've made for a stronger record. would've also been very here for the soul/gem/kings/acab ep

I think kings would’ve definitely been included in that 5 song LP… especially with Deakins comments on it as a closer. Since genies and magicians would also be no brainers I wonder what the fifth song would’ve been… stride or acab

yeah saw that deakin was team anti defeat closer lol. would guess the rest of the band probably were too, ah well

i do think blindmowing is probably right in thinking that was the main reason they scrapped the 5 song lp idea... defeat is an entire side of vinyl, so if it isn't going to be your closer then it would have to open, which would be, um, bold. wonder if they were considering getting fancy with vinyl formats to smuggle defeat into the middle of the tracklisting somehow, like a 12" plus a 10" or 7"
