dang that's a great interview! cool insights

genuine question from someone who barely follows music: do pitchfork reviews even matter any more, like at all, or do people just care because they used to be a huge deal back in the day? I feel like i never see that site mentioned anywhere these days outside of this board so it makes me wonder if it's just the previous significance of the site that makes people care. but again don't really follow music stuff. from what i can see that anthony franco guy seems to have more cultural significance these days, whether you like him or not?

loving the record, strangers and stride and magicians are all great, basically what i was expecting. genie's is great too, except i feel like they could have done something to make the final transition/climax moment feel bigger. still getting used to the sequencing - i feel like defeat and kings could have been switched, kings feels like it could serve as a good interlude and defeat as a grand finale, but maybe i'll feel differently after some more listens

biggest thing for me, and idk how much is influenced by the fact that it was the only one that wasn't played live, but i can't get over how much i love clubs. it was a rare instance of immediately loving it on the first listen, such a revelation and i hope they do more stuff in that vein, but also could see it being a one-off type vibe

I’m glad Geo stays positive, but I also can’t help but wonder if he hasn’t had an actual solo release because Domino doesn’t think it will get enough sales / he won’t be making any money from it

looks like the official lyrics are on genius!

clubs:

Everyone's a 9 to 5
Barely placed in time
Gone when it arrives
Mind in overdrive
Nights of turning in goodbyes

Living in a world of trials
Tiles of every color
Under an open bride
Mystic worlds collide
They said they had never died

That interview was a little depressing, makes me glad I bought the vinyl (which I don't often do). Yeah they're not as big as they were during MPP but it seems like they've held onto a solid fan base and time skiffs had some of their biggest songs in years - is that not enough these days to keep comfortable?

no additional touring stinks, glad i was able to catch a show from each leg last year. pretty please AC, release some soundboards. a nice cherry on top to the 5ish years these songs have been floating around.

It bums me out a bit to hear Geo talking about day jobs. I'd like to live in a little world where good musicians can focus on doing what they do best every day.

Is ACAB a sign of the next AC era? The one where the boys get 9-to-5s?

Yah I love Painting With and Centipede, always been two of my favorite AC records and always felt like the panning of them was some kind of weird groupthink bullshit lol. Anyways loving this album listened last night through and really impressed with the studio version of Defeat on this listen through. Genies still might be my fave on the record though.

Maybe PW wasn't as critically panned as people remember, but it still gets brought up all the time in subsequent press/reviews as the "bad" anco album, more or less.

CHz, on the other hand, just felt like a panning because it came off a multi-year stretch of steadily increasing adoration. It was more of a contextual, cultural-temperature panning.

Deak, are you fuckin kidding me? Wasn’t trying to be crying in the club tonight. This song is incredible. I told someone Broke Zodiac was like a top five all time favorite song (as of this week lol) and it isn’t even the best song in this album. Finally seeing lyrics I’m 100% prepared to say Deak solo 2 is now my most anticipated album from camp anco

It is with celebratory relief that I can say It Is Now.

And what an album it is. Listening to it today, I was struck by how acoustic it is -- their most acoustic album since Sung Tongs. And I was reminded how much I yearned for them to make an album like this after Painting With. I liked that record, but it seemed like the logical end of a stretch starting in 2009 with MPP of them being very synthetic or electric. From MPP to Down There, CHz, Tomboy, Slasher Flicks, Greaper and PW, they dabbled in a lot more of an electronic and/or busy style, all culminating with PW the ultimate busy and electronic album. Of course, Avey then pivoted back to acoustic guitar for Eucalyptus and MotW, they did Sung Tongs tour in 2018, Panda made Buoys in 2018, so they pivoted back that direction, but I was really yearning for a Full Band Album that leaned into acoustic sounds.

And boy do we have a whole host of them on this album, between the acoustic guitar, hurdy gurdy and piano/celeste, not to mention accents of bassoon, violin, cello. This feels like drinking a hot cup of strong tea in a hippie's basement of musty rugs, rotting wooden walls, dimly lit.

It's such a patient, spacious record, all analog, acoustic goodness, flows with grace and the occasional Panda bounce -- a vintage, slightly elegant walk through the most recent museum of AC's minds.

Once again, they've made an album like none other in their catalog. How do they keep doing this?

Regardless of what's been said above about the review (which is well-written), rating Time Skiffs above this is objectively wrong.

IIN made me revisit Skiffs, and I have to say, I think it's better in a way. It's at the very least more consistent. They're two very different albums, and this one has the strongest songs (Defeat, Genies, Magicians , Stride), so it could go either way.

IDK if it's bc of the quality between the bird and official, or if I'm just noticing it more now, but the bass is hitting HARD on some of these tracks. Noticing some serious thumpage on Broke Zodiac and Magicians in particular rn and more cool bass guitar stuff than before

Okay - I’ve listened to the record five times since midnight last night. Written some little scatter brained thoughts and feelings. Not super detailed or anything. Just thought I needed to get them down somewhere. I enjoyed the record on my first couple of listens, but it’s intricacies didn’t really open up for me until the third. Definitely an album that requires some patience.
Spoiler: show
Soul Capturer:

What an introduction. I believe this song was a later addition to this crop of tracks?? If so - it absolutely shows. Feels like it’s from a different world. In a nice way though. It’s like you’re being gently pushed towards the edge of a cliff before you eventually slip and fall into Genie’s.

Genie’s Open:

On first listen, the opening sounds of this track made me tear up a little. There’s something so comforting about Genie’s - you just feel like you’re in a safe hands right from the start. Almost want to say that Genie’s is like the mission statement for this whole era of the band. It’s the sound of Skiffs and IIN at its core for 8 minutes. It’s like everything else is orbiting around Genie’s.

Broke Zodiac:

I feel like I’ve seen people saying in the last year that PB saves his best stuff for his solo work and the band gets the less exciting stuff. After last year’s Car Keys and now Broke - I must disagree. Car Keys became one of my most listened to AC tracks ever and I can already see the exact same thing happened with Broke.

That chorus is just absolutely massive. Glorious. I really love how fucking dour this record is - and the production goes a long way in achieving this. So intimate and dry. It’s almost as if this is the biggest sounding small album I’ve ever heard. If that makes any sense whatsoever. This element really took me by surprise.

Magicians:

God this is an all timer. I think this might be the AC track that sounds the most like a solo-Avey release. I like that!! Just listening to 7s the other day, I was thinking all these tracks could have been improved will the rest of the band behind them.

Really joyful track to my ear. Especially in the midst of a bunch of songs which is generally quite melancholy. I really need time to dive into this one more. I just know i love it a lot.

Defeat:

Now obviously I knew this was a big one. I must say, this actually did take me by surprise because it wasn’t at all what I was expecting. I think I thought at some point the track was gonna explode. Pounding drums and screeching saxophone. Avey screams. That sort of thing. Instead it’s a more consistent gentle sadness for 20 minutes. I LOVE IT. That last chunk, the last 6 or 7 minutes, is just unbelievably beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the boys do something that sounds this mature.

Quite funny to hear the album title in this context. In my head - Isn’t it Now? was a positive question - it’s quite clear to me now that this isn’t the case at all.

Gem & I:

Not sure about this coming straight after the bleak ending of Defeat but I’m sure I’ll be able to rationalise it in my head in some way. POP perfection from PB once again.

I saw there was some debate over BUM BUM - which I assume wasn’t present in earlier live versions of the track? Obviously this is my first time hearing the song, but i think the track would feel a little empty without them. Big fan!

Really enjoyed the lyrics on this one. Just telling you to sit back and vibe. (and potentially a comment on the current state of the band?)

Stride Rite:

Unfortunately this is the only track that isn’t immediately working for me at the moment. It’s not even that I dislike what I’m hearing - it’s just that my brain can’t retain or process what I’m hearing, in the same way as the rest of the songs. I generally quite like Deakin songs so not sure why this one isn’t sinking in. Will probably work for me on further listens. I’ll force it.

Piano is beautiful! Vocals are great! Lyrics are very Deakin-y! For whatever reason, my brain is just blocking it out. Can’t really say too much more until the track opens up for me.

All The Clubs Are Broken:

Not even sure where to start with this. Completely bewildering. A brief moment of delirium while lost in the sea of light.

Without a doubt the craziest ear-worm on the album for me. Catchy in a way you don’t usually get from Avey. Does this really fit with the rest of the songs? Maybe it will with time but kinda sticks out to me right now. Feels like it’s own thing. I wonder if this is any indication of where the band are going next. Full ABBA mode for the next record.

Kings Walk:

Just bringing the plane into landing for this last one. Wrapping things up with some good old fashion AC tropes. Not an issue with that at all. On first listen, was surprised by how many times this song sounded like it was about to finish then kept going. Fun stuff.

Anyone ever think the band sounds a bit like The Beach Boys?

Yeah absolutely. Once the record has sunk in a little more and novelty is wearing off. Any recommendations for where I should start? I’m kinda holding out for a professional recording of the FULL music box show - who knows whether that will actually happen though. I have all the Blast Sessions downloaded but obviously have never touched them.

The blast radio broadcasts on YouTube are a pretty good place to start, some dope older versions of tracks like Broke and Soul Capturer. There’s a version of Stride Rite from 2021 too which I think is much better than what it turned out to be. I have a feeling we’re not getting the full music box gig. Just a hunch but can’t think otherwise after reading that geo interview

I didn't know Deak worked as a carpenter in off times. Wonder if the hard labor / satisfaction from working with your hands has affected what he thinks about in songwriting.

Giving it a good listen on headphones again today. Every listen it gets a little better and its already one for near their best. As I get older its hard for any album to become something like an all time favorite because it is competing with things that have been formative and a part of my life for (in some cases) almost a couple of decades. But there's a real warmth and familiarity with this that I think will grow with me very well. Always grateful for these guys.
