Wonder if they'd split it up and bookend the album with it with the circus somewhere in the middle. I don't really think it'll feature on an album anymore tbh, think it'll be its own thing

I don't think so, they know it's the best shit they ve done in a while and Domino knows it too. They are just doing thing like back in the days, playing stuff 2?3 years before releasing it. (I hope)

Despite the length, I feel like Defeat belongs on an album. It'd be a missed opportunity if it got released on its own imo.

To me it feels like the nucleus of the new material. Leaving Defeat off the LP would be like making Banshee Beat or Brother Sport a b-side. I think it'll get condensed but will still take up a full side of an album, a la Sufjan Stevens' Impossible Soul. To me, it sounds like a shoo-in for side C.
A Defeat EP that ends up being close to full length like Bridge to Quiet alongside a full LP could also work. This would track with the familiar single+EP release in the album cycles.
If it makes the LP, I think there's a chance we're looking at the first double album. Chances might even be higher considering the recording got delayed.

leaving defeat off the album would be like leaving safer off of strawberry jam
also i really honestly believe that 2019 defeat's first section is 10x better than music box and actually top 3 songs they've ever made. the third part is tied with music box but panda and avey harmonizing over so something so straightforwardly depressing is just armor piercing and i prefer it personally. i really, really hope it sounds like 2019 aside form the middle part. they're gonna need more drums for dat

I was THERE for BOTH the originals, and I think the harpsichord addition is great. it was the same melody but like on the Roland I guess. its still Roland, just harpsichord preset now? (in fall '19 tour)

safer is unironically their magnum opus i don't care what anyone says. i think it could have served as a single or it's own release as opposed to being on the single for Peacebone. Safer is absolutely magical.

I always liked that it sounded like it was performed live, but I know what you mean

Holy shit i was just talking with my wife about how I hoped they were working on something because i've been endlessly listening to CHZ era and 2019 boots. I'm excited

Also put up some signed art prints for sale. $320 is too steep for me (esp. considering only 3/4 signed it) but only 50x available.

I think they’re doing more distance stuff. Maybe a new EP working with Panda remotely? Doubtful that it’s any of the stuff from last year

Yeah in a way I think I would be slightly disappointed if they recorded any of the 2019 stuff with Panda long distance, he's gotta be in the room with them to get the feeling right for that material. But also there were those photos of Avey and Geo hanging out at drop of sun studio from a lil while ago. Feel like whatever they're doing now is at least somewhat more live/in the flesh than say Bridge to Quiet was.

Looks like it’s confirmed that they are working on the songs from last year and hope to have it out in 2021.

Interesting. I can see them dropping something else this year, maybe a standalone 7" a la Honeycomb/Crimson or something.
Maybe even Defeat. It's the perfect song 2020 song

The fact that Avey was so chill about giving out info makes me think an official announcement can't be too far off? Very curious about all of this, I guess Panda just recorded drums long distance and they swapped files? Very interested to hear what sort of creative decisions/compromises came out of working around COVID restrictions.

FWIW Painting With and Buoys both got announced in November for a February release so here's hoping that Domino chooses to go with a super long lead time again

Yeah idk how they even could approach that batch of songs without Noah, considering he contributed at least 4 songs, significant backing vocals to others, not to mention drumming. There's no reason he couldn't contribute all those elements remotely. Bands do basically the same all the time. You lose a certain sort of live feel without the drummer in the room reacting to everyone in real time, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily going to be worse off for it.

Maybe it's a long shot but what if they're using a combination of soundboards from 2019 shows and remote recordings?

Didn’t they make MPP remotely? Or was that just the writing process?

Just for the demos, and I think Avey and Geo actually got together for two weeks while Noah was doing a few soloshows?

didn't Geo say at some point that this would be something new, since he felt they needed the full band in the studio for the 2019 tracks?

Noah didn't feature on a bunch of the Music box stuff. Could be like four of those tracks.
The insta says 'a few things cooking' anyways so whoknows??????????????????

I wanted a collection of the new songs to listen to on the go so I put together a little album and did some mixing/editing to try to get a somewhat consistent sound and volume level between tracks, as well as removing some crowd noise.
I used Desert Daze, Meow Wolf, and hunkswithguns' Big Sur recording. Hope it's cool if I share
edit: lol, I missed Stride Right so I took down the link, I'll put it back up sometime tomorrow since I also want to fix a few other things
edit again: also took down the new link because I found a better version of strangers, will put it back up shortly
last edit for real this time:

the partridge family remix on the new neil cicierega album (starts 11:35) sounds like that new harpsichord song

Thankfully recording drums remotely is fairly easy. I'm confident Noah would have the resources to track drums at a local studio or his own and send them over for mixing. I highly doubt we'd even be able to tell. With networked audio these days it's absolutely doable.

Yep, those are basically my thoughts. Even if they didn't want to use a click track, they probably have rehearsal recordings that would serve as decent scratch tracks.
