the first time i listened to honeycomb/gotham i thought about how super busy it sounded, and i got really psyched about how the production on the album could be... but then the album came, and although the production was totally awesome... the songwriting wasn't as good as on previous albums, which totally bummed me out.

it gets really boring at parts. im all for some good ol experimental ac, but they should work on having some really solid songs before being experimental for experimental's sake.

kinda feelin this is their... "wowee zowee" althought not as good, ya know? you make one universally acclaimed "breakthrough" album and then you do something from waay out of left field that's not as good or cohesive.

i feel that they needed to have some filter with this one, and all they did was release all the best songs from the era (honeycomb, gotham, crimson) separately, like why the fuck would you do that

heres hoping their next one will be their "brighten the corners" though

all the 14 chz era songs are on such a high level of song-writing and production for me, i don't really get how so many people can be totally turned off by some of them. i can understand that some are bummed by some production choices (monkey riches and mercury man sounded a little more exciting when they played them live, others are so much better in the studio like gotham). but all in all the record and the 3 songs which were released as singles sound pretty coherent to me

also from an instrumentation point of view and the level of skill and innovation with melodies and rhythms are some of the most impressive things they've ever done i think.

i almost immediately jumped to the defense of brighten the corners, but you might have a point.

it's got all of the ingredients of every classic pavement record and more than a couple of just insanely catchy songs, but it doesn't have the emotional rawness of their first records, the wackiness of wowee zowee, or the spaciously produced coolness of terror twilight as a whole.

anyway, animal collective. here's to hoping their next record defies expectations

it sucks if people dont like it, it sucks if they like it but dont think its good and it sucks if they think its good but dont appreciate it but im very hesitant to call any of their atuff better than something else theyve done cuz they dont achieve quality through normal means they cast spells and shit so its always magical never gooder

Yeah, Avey actually mentioned one time they use alchemy to make their songs. So you're onto something there.

lol, maybe i ruined the comparison by saying that wowee zowee is not as good as crooked rain, but you guys get the point.

i just really want an album filled with hooks, even if it's not that accesible. this one has lots of hooks, i know, but theyre really buried under all those vocal effects

whenever i listen to it, i find it hard to listen to from beginning to end, shit is energetic/busy track after energetic/busy track and the only real "break" is pulleys towards the end of the album

in my mind, CHZ is brimming with hooks, maybe even more than MPP in terms of effectiveness, though it's really hard to compare hooks. They don't seemed diminished by the stuffed compositions at all though imo. AC is pretty much all hooky to me post HCTI, barring spacier ST and Feels stuff.. and ODSC and TTG when aveys not singing....

That was pretty awesome, solidifies my opinion that Mercury Man is the best song on the album 8-)

I still wonder why Mercury Man was the only album track they weren't playing at the shows the tour after the lp dropped. p sure they played Father Time at some, maybe swapped out with the sweet Lion they were doing.. but never Mercury. Great song

Crimson and Merc, nice^. The show I saw was perfect but they seemed rlly set on fast jams (my personal faves) for that tour, but its too bad they weren't doing Gotham or Crimson much

I'm ready for the band to start rubbing their naked bodies in glowpaint and defecating on each other onstage.

Animal Collective Stage 2: Transcendence.
