so it rules, glad to have that confirmed. stray thoughts -
Spoiler: show
dragon slayer and car keys were never favorites of mine in the boots and i don't quite love them yet here. hard to say why. i like the weird sounds on car keys.

i straight up skipped the singles this listen bc i've heard them enough and i might as well save the full proper album listen for official release, so there's still something to look forward to. but as of now i think walker is the weak link of the album. not the most rewarding track to relisten imo.

the last four tracks are one of their best stretches in forever.

cherokee and passerby were two big questions marks bc of the changes we heard in the boots. they were both standouts in '19 and both fell in my estimation after they changed. of the two, i had more confidence cherokee would stick the landing in the studio. it did, and actually the sequencing here is perfect bc cherokee is where this album's identity came into focus fully on my first listen. i can't pinpoint the moment in the song, like the way i can pinpoint the beginning of did you see the words when the piano joins the guitar and the sample of laughing children, that's where i get submerged in the atmosphere of feels. this time, it was delayed because i've heard versions of all these songs before, i'm just finally hearing them in their proper context. but just as the start of feels transports me to scenes from childhood, some nebulous part of cherokee took me into this album's world. it's a bit harder to define what it is. all i know is it's dark and cavernous, but not scary. and it's the most distant ac has ever felt from childhood. this album is mature.

the mature pov crystallizes on passerby, at least partially in a meta sense. we all know this song could have been a banger. the '19 version i always imagined as a face melting opening track like in the flowers. it has that huge moment in the middle and i was so bummed when it got improved in the newer boots. what's fascinating is hearing how hard in the opposite direction they took it, with the vocals going pointedly understated in the climax and a more subtle buildup. plus they inverted the vocal melody in the first part. both changes dramatically alter the whole vibe of the song. what's surprisingly is i immediately really like it in context. this is the maturity i'm talking about. this song goes out of its way not to be showy, and now it makes sense that the early reviews haven't really mentioned this track. it's serving more of a supporting role. and it's still really pretty but in a subtler way. i find it really neat.

we go back is a slightly slowed down painting with song. i'm glad it still has the zany vocal effects. no complaints here, best iteration of the track easily and it fits strangely well nestled in the soft rock section of the lp.

wasn't expecting the ethereal chirpy intro to royal and desire but i love it. love dave's backup vocals, especially parts where they kept the autotune. josh has long brought an air of maturity to his songs so it's appropriate to have him close out this album. this song was great all along and has gotten better every iteration. might be the prettiest ac song ever.

Dragon Slayer. Seems like an odd choice, in an album full of drawn out intros and outros, for the first song to just launch right into it. Also don't think the slower tempo really works. I do like how the chorus turned out tho.

agree that it doesn’t feel quite right starting up so quick on these early listens. i feel like it should ease into it more with a more drawn out intro. maybe i’ll come around tho

i read that klf album was recorded in 1 take in a warehouse with all the gear laid out on a table in the middle of the warehouse like on some kinda rube goldberg type shit

which KLF record? such a fascinating band/conceptual art factory. I mean the gall to literally burn 1 million pounds....amazing

chill out

i'm actually cracking up at that slant writer thinking of 3 different meanings for the title Cherokee - without realizing that there is an actual Cherokee, NC, near Black Mountain and Asheville, which has its own native american history, where cherokee people hid in the smoky mountains during the trail of tears and later purchased the land back from the us gov thru a white mediator.

not that any of this matters in the context of the song, but it is such a swing and a miss to say it "seems to refer to the Jeep or, perhaps, the Cherokee Nation’s tribal jurisdiction in Oklahoma."

(un)shameful first post here, desperate for tetsuo's boosted punch
EDIT someone put it on mu, and god this is perfect. i love the medieval tone of dragon slayer, i love the production of car keys, i love the subtlety of the autotune in Cherokee and we go back, and royal is absolute heaven. this record is everything i hoped it would be, the best elements of the live versions perfectly condensed

I think it definitely matters! The band’s always been about connecting back to nature and have been more explicit about their indigenous influences and tributes as of the past few years, like with Meeting of the Waters. The liner notes do a land acknowledgment. It’s one of the reasons why Cherokee’s been one of my favorites of this era: a send-up to Americana, and how beautiful the land is but so cursed with the sins of the United States. Even its noir theme plays a part in that—noir is originally a genre that presented the duality of city mythologies, of places commodified into utopias off the backs of their people, who in turn make up a deep underground of crime and struggle. The author Mike Davis writes about this

Excited to delve into its lyrics when the official set comes out

Haven't had time to really write my thoughts on the album yet. But it is beautiful, and makes me want to cry justing listening to it. I've had this anticipating for this album for these last two crazy years especially. It feels like such a good release to finally hear it.

I'm pleasantly surprised, loving it actually. If TS2 actually has the best songs on it from the two it's gonna be TOP TIER AC fr.

I’ve waited this long I guess.

At least I’ll get to make the first listen super special.

Anyone read the New Yorker piece? Absolute dogshit.

Though I will say, comparing AnCo's music to that of The Beach Boys is a pretty novel idea. Interesting comparison!

Beach Boys comparisons are very common when it comes to Animal Collective.

im gonna have to chill on the vinyl rip for sure. it's ugly. surprised more of yal aren't complaining about this subtle but unavoidable graininess to it.

Also feel like Cherokee and Passer-by are "ruined' aka I demoitis'ed myself. Thank god for the Blast sessions.

I wonder if the other dude's ever wanna warn another writer about a demoitis hazard. Like did Panda and Deak hear Avey change the lyrics and then melody (that one phrase) in Passer-by and think: 'o fuck they're gonna hate that, I sort of hate that'.

And I also got so used to Deakin singing climax of Cherokee. Everything sounds like sandpaper, or chalky hands on something dry.

anyway, don't mind me.

Idk I thought it was a pretty good piece. The last paragraph resonated with me. I've been thinking a lot about how long they've been a band and how this batch of songs is the most straightforward thing they've ever done. There's a weird sense of familiarity and comfort which is something kind of alien in AC music, at least when it's new. For me and a lot of others probably I think of them as really blowing open my mind to new sounds and ideas so hearing them in this kind of normal band setup has been weird? Feels kind of had that but its so warped that I don't really consider that a rock abum at all. Is it that straightforward or is there something else going on? Idk I haven't listened to the record yet.

I also feel like we're really only beginning to see their influence emerge in the wider music world too like the article said so maybe it's just that all of these sounds and ideas have become more ingrained in what's been coming out in the last decade and these songs would have felt different 10 years ago.

Also as tired as the beach boys comparisons are my girlfriend's love of the beach boys helped her get into AC and when she played Smiley Smile for me for the first time like 2 years ago I was like oh yeah you know I get it now. And Smiley Smile rules. Can't let the comparisons bother you just gotta enjoy the tunes

Mine hasn't even dispatched. Where are you that it isn't coming until Saturday? I guess they excuse not being on time because they email you a digital download? Really annoying though. I am trying to blast off with some Special K for my listening experience :smugdog:
